MLB made a bad call on umpires having to confer to eject a pitcher it needs to go back to the way it was before. Where an umpire (naimly the home plate umpire) can eject a pitcher if they feel a pitch was intentional or not. Could have a small bearing on BCB's
@darkarima2 жыл бұрын
Dumb question: I know umpires already have to memorize and use a lot of hand signals, but would it do any harm to add two more? Namely "Oh yeah, he's gone" and "Wait, I think it's calm enough that we can confer and/or I'm not sure yet". If three "Gone" signals go up and HP agrees, he or she immediately ejects the pitcher who beaned someone (or obviously tried).

@@gassyjones The MLB powers that be wanted more ratings, and fights = ratings. That extra time it takes for umpires to "confer" is all the time it takes for things to boil over as seen here. MLB could give a shit less about the pitcher ejections after warnings are issued, but if making umpires confer allows a little extra time for shit to hit the fan... well, that's gravy for the MLB ratings and likely exactly what they are going for here. To be honest, this is a bit of a conspiracy theory take, but one I am willing to stick by. After all, in what other situation does an umpire have to confer with the rest of the crew before issuing a disqualification/ejection?
@dodgerblue73812 жыл бұрын
Is that why he wasn't immediately tossed. I couldn't understand why the home plate umpire hadn't tossed him. I think the Trout close call last night was intentional and guaranteed the one behind the back and the butt cheek were intentional. You have to protect your players. If I were Winkler I would have just taken my base and watched the pitcher be ejected. He could have thrown at his head. There will be several suspensions on this.

Wish also the video made a little clearer the Angels' fairly unusual switch to an opener/reliever at the last minute prior to the proceedings. At what point does premeditated intent to injure another player border on criminal behavior?
@jimc.goodfellas2 жыл бұрын
Right that's not mentioned here. It is highly unusual that they switched their pitcher to the "opener" right before game time..it was pretty obvious from the game situation the night before that the pitch to Trout wasn't intentional. I doubt that Trout asked for them to do this today though . Starting to feel bad for Trout because if he never gets off this team he will never win anything
@tadewilson41092 жыл бұрын
They weren’t trying to hit him but they were trying to pitch him in as every team has done all season. If you have a guy throwing 95+ who has no control he should not be trying to hit spots up and in, especially not with the best player in the league in the box. Mike said that exact thing post-game.
@tntsabretooth2 жыл бұрын
@@tadewilson4109 Swanson has had pretty good control inside this year, just not last night (walk to previous batter included). Plus - a missed spot in is a magnitude different infraction than intentionally throwing at another players' head, imo. Intent when guys are throwing 95+ matters.
@tadewilson41092 жыл бұрын
@@tntsabretooth I think this is just the culmination of Trout getting buzzed game after game. It’s shitty that he got hit and teams have been trying to rattle him since because of that. Since Trout has always demolished the Mariners they were not going to pitch to him in that at bat at all and would rather face Ohtani. If you’re going to waste pitches don’t do it up and in on a bad control night, he missed on back to back pitches.

In my umpiring career I only ever had one bench clearing brawl. It was during a Men's fastpitch softball tournament up at Big Bear Mountain in California. Me and my partner were at an auxiliary field away from the main complex. An illegal slide at second base lit the fuse and things just exploded. All me and my partner could do was to write down uniform numbers of who was going to be ejected. We let the players sort things out and then we put our heads together and decided who was getting tossed. We ended up ejecting two players from one team and 3 players from the other. Now, these teams were lucky if they could field a twelve man roster. Both teams ended up with 9 players each.

I can see both arguments, regarding requiring the Umps to meet. On the one hand, you don't want the umps to overreact and eject somebody "by accident", but on the other hand, such as in situations like this, you want to be able to immediately eject instigators. To be clear, what I mean by "accident" is, I think I recall that there were a few very quick hooks that, on reflection, seemed like the umps were "automatically" ejecting the player, rather than analyzing the situation.
@lolbanmedaddy97922 жыл бұрын
Let's be honest, MLB requires umpires to meet to issue ejections after a warning because they know that the required meeting is enough time for tempers to flare and shit to hit the fan before they can make their ruling. If umpires can eject players and managers out of a game with no conference when there is no warning issued, there is even less reason to require them to meet when there is a warning in effect... that is, unless your goal is TV ratings. Warning issued? Word gets out and people tune in to see if anything goes down... something goes down? Even more viewers! Win for MLB. The easiest way to ensure that a warning turns into this instead of an preemptive ejection is to require all four umpires to meet before issuing an ejection after something goes down.

@@marktwain368 They need to bring in umps from Triple-A.
@lolbanmedaddy97922 жыл бұрын
@@marktwain368 MLB always has a LARGE pool of umpires from MiLB to call on and temporarily fill in the gaps where needed. MiLB umps are often called up to MLB during the season to cover for umpires that are taking a break. MLB umpires get several weeks to a month of time off each season and so MLB uses MiLB umps to cover while they are off. They also hire from the same pool of MiLB umps, but they usual do official hiring between seasons. Either way, this is not a major issue for MLB. The only slight issue they are going to wrestle with for the short term is the lack of experienced crew chiefs. For 99 games out of 100 that isn't going to matter. It's only glaringly obvious that the MLB is lacking experienced crew chiefs when something like this goes down.

I agree that umpires should have to meet up together to discuss possible ejections, however, I also agree they they should have the power to eject players immediately. I've seen many scenarios where an umpire reacts to a situation poorly and makes an ejection that is not warranted that can throw off a teams bullpen/pitching plans. I think what they should do is allow immediate ejections with the requirement of meeting up afterwards and discuss whether or not it can be reversed.

I often contemplate this. I think the answer is twofold. 1. The lopsided amount of players on the field. You could rectify this by adding that anyone not directly involved with the altercation who tries to get involved is also tossed. But that could lead to batters getting brazen about starting things with pitchers. 2. I personally believe the league uses the altercations to boost viewership.

To me this would mostly be an excuse, though it has some merit: You can't penalize people who rush out there to break up the fight, and you can't make umpires be bouncers. My response: If that's really all there is to it, use field security. (After making it clear that any player who harms field security gets *charges filed* against them and a very long suspension.)
