1B Umpire Ron Kulpa ejected Cardinals manager Mike Shildt (untimely Replay Review request) and HP Umpire Chad Fairchild ejected pitcher Genesis Cabrera (ball four call) in Cincinnati. Report: www.closecallsports.com/2021/...
Managers have 20 seconds from the end of a play and umpire's call to challenge/request a review. Kulpa ejected Shildt for arguing the crew chief's decision to deny the challenge request for being untimely by taking longer than 20 seconds to request a review. The original call - an out call at first base - would likely have been overturned had the review been permitted as replays indicate the runner was likely safe.
Cabrera's ejection was a ball/strike dispute on a 3-2 count. Fairchild ejected Cabrera for what's known as "actions intended to ridicule" in the MLB Umpire Manual, as Cabrera was walking from the pitcher's mound to the dugout after the walk.

I like the idea of adding a replay umpire in the booth and doing away with the challenge. That is how it is in College Football and it works pretty well. Now where the defense may have an advantage in that world is the team could use a mound visit to give the replay umpire more time to look at the play (as we see in College Football when a team calls a timeout) or decide to do a quick play such as a pickoff attempt to reduce the amount of time the replay umpire has to look at a play (as we see when the offense rushes to the line to get a play off).

I'm a lifelong Cardinals fan. . .And Cabrera's act was embarrassing to say the least. I grew up watching perhaps the greatest Cardinal of them all, Stan "The Man" Musial. One of the amazing stats from his Hall of Fame career was. . .Stan NEVER got thrown out of a game. Now you know that in 22 years in the majors there had to be several times Stan could have gotten all upset about an ump's call. But with the kind of class that's sadly missing in many of today's millionaire players, Stan just walked back to the dugout and let it roll off his back. He knew he'd get another chance at the plate and he focused on looking forward to that. I'm not a big fan of the umps, but the playground childishness of more and more players is really turning me off. And as far as hitters go I really have seen enough of these guys taking a third strike and then making a face, moaning and groaning about the call. Look, if you have 2 strikes on ya and the pitch was close enough that the ump called it a strike, even if it was a little outside the zone, then with 2 strikes you need to either swing and do the best you can with it OR learn to foul pitches like that off. . .Stan used to do that all the time. Fouling off pitches you can't handle or don't like with 2 strikes on ya is a skill that seems all but forgotten these days. But as a Cardinals fan I really hated seeing Cabrera's little league act.

And if you think 20 seconds is a short time, in the National Rugby League in Australia, captains have only 10 seconds to challenge calls, and they don’t get the benefit of their own replay staffs to help decide when to challenge. They have to make the best decision they can, and they only get one unsuccessful challenge per match. They also don’t get the benefit of asking the referee to initiate a challenge even if they’re out of challenges. MLB teams have it comparably easier and still can’t make a decision in a timely manner.

Why don't they just give teams something like 60 seconds of challenge review time, total, for the game. If you wanna use 30 seconds reviewing a play in the 2nd inning, you've only got 30 seconds for the rest of the game. You wanna use 45? You've only got 15 left. Clock could be triggered by the dugout phone. Most games there's only 1 or 2 potentially reviewable calls anyway. I'd rather see correct calls than be able to go to bed 2 minutes earlier.

I'm not a fan of "challenges", especially in games with dead ball situations after plays (I can understand it in NFL where clock matters and they do booth reviews in certain times). Either get the call right with reviews or don't do reviews at all. Pick a set of calls that get reviewed automatically in tight situations and then review them when anyone thinks it's a close enough call to check (one of the umpires, either coach or the players). Correct calls are more important than "pace of play".

Those umpires were terrible all weekend! Just more ammunition to show how the umpires are conspiring with the league to fix games. The Reds franchise is failing and attendance if just above the Pirates low levels. The league wants them in the playoffs if not the WS winner

Card announcers are a joke. They should smarten up before they tell the viewers what they think the rules are. The rule is clear: Team has 20 seconds to challenge or not. The rule is not 21 or 25 or 30 seconds. 20 seconds and that's it. If the team cannot decide by 20 seconds play has to keep going. Very ignorant and typical of Cards announcers to whine, complain and make false claims.

simple solution do away with instant replay in all sports. it takes away from the game more than a wrong call does, especially when with replay they still can't get it right.
