It was an honor to witness this event knowing Marvan as a friend and the finest batsman I admired in world cricket. I watched his playing throughout his school match days and played for Sri Lanka. Technically accurate, true-spirited batsman, captain, and an excellent ambassador for Sri Lankan cricket. During his leadership as Sri Lankan captain, the ICC awarded Sri Lanka the spirit of the game as a team. His innings of 51 in the First Test against Australia (2007/8) in 183 deliveries was criticized by commentator Ian Chappell as he was so patient and even did not take a single run when even possible, and followed up with a brilliant 80 in the following test match, which was his last test innings.
