Truly a.privilege to listen to a pianist of Ekaterina Derzhavina 's calibre- they're a very rare breed. In my opinion one of the very best interpreter of JS Bach- and Rameau in particular.Magical!

So much musicality, such a vital tempo and so different! And let's be honest: one of the best interpretations I ever heard.

What can one say about this playing and music that wouldn't sound trite in comparison? Truly exemplary Bach from Derzhavina, as always! ...The variety and control she has over articulation is a marvel.

Ce que fait Katya avec Bach est toujours une merveille! elle pige l'esprit le plus profond du génial créateur JSB sans la moindre difficulté - une interprétation stratosphérique!

One of my favourite Bach pieces, both to play and to listen to. She is clearly a superb pianist, but personally the Prelude and Fugue are much, much too fast. Although, on the other hand, Bach really just provides the notes, almost as a challenge to make something of them, so there's no right or wrong.
@ThePianiszt4 жыл бұрын
I agree i think its really fast. Speed not everything. But anyway she handles the speed quiet good.
@frenchimp4 жыл бұрын
I like the speed. The fugue sounds like one of those crazy gigues. It makes sense to me.
@skakdosmer2 жыл бұрын
Bach was known for preferring fast tempi. And I love this! I always felt that lute players were playing this much too slowly. I can’t help feeling that this must be much closer to the composer’s intention. Or maybe even a little brisker …

The fugue is unrecognizable

also why the Double parts on repeats? I'm pretty sure that's not how it's written and also, this is Bach, not Vivaldi

I fear that if she hummed throughout nobody would have the nerve to even mention her decisions about tempi, let alone criticise them. The point is that the music emerges with crystalline clarity due to superhuman articulation, and brilliant use of the pedal. Personally it is one of my favourite bits of Bach keyboard playing on KZfaq and, frankly, I don't know anyone who plays Bach better on the "wrong" instrument.
@harley2582 жыл бұрын
I assume you're referring to Glenn Gould - "hummed throughout". If anything, Gould has been notoriously critiqued for his decisions about tempi. Probably more than any other Bach interpreter.
@vinylisland63862 жыл бұрын
@@harley258 Yes, but not by the host of unquestioning admirers on KZfaq. Whearas Ms. Derzhavina has not been afforded the same respect.

Since I came to this performance first and immediately loved it, all the slower performances of this piece seem unbelievably portentous, pretentious and ponderous.

Stunning interpretation ! This, with the Goldberg’s, sets Derzhavina as the supreme Bach interpreter, from my point of view. Does anyone knows if this recording is still available anywhere else than KZfaq? Was it commercialized on a any EP?

She has recorded the French Suites and other Bach keyboard works on the Profil label; may have to get it from Germany. But if you subscribe to classicalarchives.com, which you should, only $80/yr, that 2-CD set is available for listening and/or downloading.

is that some type of sound deadening material made to look like a stone/masonary corner wall or is she in a stone walled corner of some structure? i have never seen a background quite like it.
@ADGO6 жыл бұрын
I didn't realise it until you brought it up, but it's possible the photo was taken at this very recital, which was recorded in a castle in Germany. That would explain the wall I think.

ok, thanks. that is probably a picture from the recital.

Didn't realise that this is the same piece that many guitarists play, sometimes in different keys, and much slower. Sorry about my ignorance :) Perfectly adaptable for a piano, isn't it?

Как безупречно и прекрасно звучит фуга. Я впервые слышу эту пианистку . У Йохелеса прелюдия мне нравится больше, и темп и вселенская меланхолия .

It's only seems fast to the slow-witted. To the alert and alive, it is sublime.

Right you are, apologies to those who disagree........

I feel and understand that it is sublime at this speed but when I hear the slower version its as if i can feel it even more. Its more speciel the slow speed has its own magic. My own opinion of course

I must be one of the "alert and alive', then.
@franceskinskij2 жыл бұрын
the performance is good but apart from the prelude and fuga being played too fast (I've heard play the gigue WAAAY TOO slow) the question is: why did she play the Double on the repeats?
@manuelfrn2 жыл бұрын
What's the rush? You're trying to play it quickly, because you're afraid to forget it?
@hindenburg15962 жыл бұрын
No, just a musical choice, she would have it memorized surely

So much is lost playing it this fast. (Reacting to the first movement in particular.)

@irynazhukovskaya31202 жыл бұрын

Virtuosity isn't everything. Feeling and understanding count more. Bach's beauty should not be glossed over so precipitately. She's another Gieseking. He also zipped thru the music to leave the others in the dust, losing much of it in the process (although his English Suite #6 is still fab). She needs to mature and - yes - stop showing off. I think in time she will and has every potential of becoming a great Bach interpreter.
@fredfeinberg39954 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree less on this. She won the inaugural Bach competition, and is among the least show-offy pianists I've encountered, ever: she doesn't even play warhorse things like Islamey and Liszt Rhapsodies, only the highest-quality music, especially Bach and Schubert. The idea of her needing to "grow up" is frankly absurd; she is in her 50s and lauded all over the world for her refined control and balanced performances.
@dorfmanjones3 жыл бұрын
Nonsense. She's an infinitely more sensitive and polished Bach player the Gieseking was. Moreover she's not playing the lute, and It can definitely be played faster on the piano.
@INDIGOBLUE5552 жыл бұрын
@@dorfmanjones I dislike rating pianists generally speaking,but when listening to W.Gieseking's rendition of the English Suite 2 in A minor I sincerely feel a bit disappointed.I guess he's really projecting himself not only over the score but over musicality itself. This young lady is way more refined as far as I can see albeit I'd rather listening to her rendition of the same piece before comparing their approach to Bach.
