El Cajon Mayor says enforcing encampment bans is crucial step in tackling homelessness

Following Friday's Supreme Court decision that allows cities to enforce bans on homeless people sleeping outside in public spaces, local groups and elected leaders voiced their thoughts.
"Today's decision rightly empowers state and local officials to compassionately clear encampments," said Senate Minority Leader Brian W. Jones, R-Santee. "Californians should not have to tolerate the encampments that have taken over our communities. This is not about criminalizing homelessness -- it's about ensuring the safety of both the community and homeless individuals.

Why are these people out in the street? No one can afford housing in CA. Most places in CA want $2000 for a studio. When I was growing up, that was the mortgage my dad paid for the entire house, it still is but somehow apartment rents have skyrocketed. So blame greedy apartment owners who want $2000 for a studio. Essentially, just to pay rent, you'd have to make about 70k to live comfortably. The government and the economy is driving these people out of their homes. I've been jobless for over a year, if I hadn't saved up money, I'd be out on the streets too. Everybody is literally a pay check or two away from being homeless.

Stop raising rent rent should be 500$ a month and not 1000$ and jobs are nor hiring Americans thers a lot off cold blooded Booses out there they expect only eligals to work for free and nasco only hiring prisoners

I have been out there living in the street. I got arrested for a real crime, and it was the best thing that ever happened to me. I got the help that's available to everyone. I have personally seen the amount of homeless that are just drug addicts. To say that there is no "drug problem" is to ignore the problem and ultimately keep people from getting the help they need.

Set up camp in the most expensive part of town. Then start crying about how you can't afford anything. That is, except fentanyl and meth

I noticed how reluctant Mr. Wells was to admit that he wanted to help his tax-paying constituents as well as the drug addicts on the streets. That's telling. And it's not Mr. Wells' fault. The so-called "advocates" have a very loud and punishing voice. Those of us who are sick of this mess need to speak up even louder.

I live in Logan Heights but was previously unhoused. The agenda this man has is exactly what doesn't work. Being unhoused is a SOCIAL problem, we need to consider the unique situations of every individual. And no, the majority of unhoused folx here in San Diego don't have an "drug problem", that stereotype is pretty absurd. Not that it should matter anyways. Drug problem or not, ALL folx need a place to call home.

To use the word "absurd" is to deny the problem, and I have first-hand knowledge of how many are addicts and how many even refuse housing because, like me,they couldn't take the pipe with them. Some of the best people I've ever met are out there, and they need help with drug addiction, then a place to live when they're clean. No one is saying everyone is an addict. Denying the problem only makes it acceptable. Please help them out. No judgment, just love.

Not exactly sure where they are going to go aside from squatting on private property instead. It is not exactly ethical to jail someone for being in poverty, too.

Although a controversial topic and everyone has their opinion, they need to have a large designated zone for all encampments that is not near transit, schools, or residential areas. If they can all be given the incentive of food, water, counseling, rehabilitation, identification, have security, transport, and many hands in this project to create a large safe space far from our city. Who’s going to pay for it? Don’t ask me lol (Half the problem)

No one focuses on the drug problem and how many people refuse the help because they can't take their meth with them to the shelter. When I was in that situation I just wanted to get high all day and the rules wouldn't allow me to have that freedom.

Letting people sleep in tents on the streets while in their addiction is enabling. Enabling is one of the most damaging things you can do to a person that's addicted to substances or alcohol. The mayor of El Cajon is absolutely correct.You have to keep talking about Rehab. And getting clean. You have to keep fucking up their high by talking about the reality of life. Either we insist people go into Rehab or we start doing drugs and we go out on the streets and join them. Those are the choices. Or your children will join then The majority. The people are going to choose That the people on the streets go to treatment
