Amazon seems to try to promote El Cid as something very close to GoT in general; but I'd say, that's misleading. El Cid is so much better because its characters, despite not exactly being good people, tend to truly care about what is right/good/just in their opinions. They're not maniacs, they're not decadents, etc. The point of the story is so far from the GoT's one. That being said, chemistry between Alfonso and Urraca sure is tremendous ♥

If Alfonso could have gotten a dispensation for their marriage, he certainly would have done it (funny how it was okay for Habsburgs&Co to get uncle-niece dispensations, you know) - especially with the bishop firmly being on their side; and even things being as they are, Alfonso is still faithful to Urraca - and looks like he always has been. Otherwhise 'estás celosa' in 2x02 would bear no meaning. Nothing to do with historical biographies, of course; but it's a shame that in the series Alfonso will also get married anyway sooner or later.

In an extremely religious period, incest was seen as something sinful and evil, being the biggest pivot for the destruction of a reputation for centuries. I mean, that was one of the "sins" Sforza found to attack Lucrezia Borgia, using the rumor that she had an affair with her father and brother to tarnish her image and to this day she carries that rumor. At this time in El Sid, I believe it would be even worse. 🤔 But of course, the church was hypocritical on many points, there were hidden sins within the doctrine, but what they pointed out as sin is that it should be sin.

@@Tudleyn No, of course it couldn't - the Church has, as far as I know, never granted permission for any brother/sister marriage (which is explicable). There was a case where the brother tried to forge a dispensation, but it was in vain: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_V,_Count_of_Armagnac And yes, considering _historical_ Alfonso and Urraca (who have nothing to do with the guys from the series), rumours of incest actually emerged mostly after their own lifetimes, as a part of intentional blackening of their reputations. It's ironic the series took that calumny (already used repeteadly in fiction about Ruy) and made something sweet and sympathetic from it. What I meant to say was, _if_ there had been any chance, series!Alfonso would have used it without the slightest doubt. He doesn't seem at odds with his conscience at all about his desire (and this guy has a well-working conscience, he showed it enough times). For Urraca it's different, but I don't think she's scared of the brother/sister incest itself (...okay, stop me now, or I'll fall into a long discussion here). I mean, for the Catholic Church at this epoch a brother + sister relationship was horrendous, but an uncle + niece like you mentioned could be viable, and therein lies the hypocrisy. I usually follow the theory of; take your theory for all or nothing. And i agree he might have considered asking for a dispensation, but i believe that would not happen at this time. I also liked how they set up their relationship. I quoted Lucrezia and Cesare because their rumors are not viable at all, there are many points that show the opposite. -Well, you never know what their relationship was in private- but I believe it wasn't how it's portrayed today. I don't know the story of Urraca and Alfonso, but yes, I believe in what you're telling me, and their case must be quite different. What have you read about them? 🙈🌚
