This Epic Ridge Traverse Bridging the Gap between El Diente Peak & Mount Wilson makes for one incredible Hiking & Climbing Adventure! Spencer & I had the unexpected fortune of running into Barbie right there at the Kilpacker Trailhead! We immediately offered to guide her on this Perilous Class 4 scramble linking two Super Classic San Juan 14er Summits. She turned out to be an invaluable asset.

I watched your Maroon, Little Bear Blanca videos and now this one. They are all spectacular. I did a few of the easy walk ups back in the day. I'm now 83 but still get a rush watching you negotiate these dizzying heights. Your camera work is amazing. Keep em coming.

@@KarlDeckerPresents I'd like to add. Watching these hordes of climbers who pay thousands for a shot to climb Everest stacked ten deep on the Hillary Step is in my opinion ludicrous. Watching you threading the needle on the Blanca Little Bear Traverse was inspiring. Safe travels my friend.

@@KarlDeckerPresents I agree with this lady, and I've only watched one of your videos. I haven't even watched this one yet, just the opening topo-regional-global location orientation (how to describe that?). This in itself is way beyond. Watching this orientation I was swimming in my mind 'back to the days' - back to 1972 when I first came over THE pass toward Silverton / Ouray from Arizona (now called the Million Dollar Highway - rt. 550) headed for who knows where; when I first skied Telluride, coming up the cliff hanging road (the original grade that gave T'Hell-you-ride it's name) in a blinding snowstorm with 12" of POW already on the road - in a 1961 IH Scout that barely moved); driving down the mountain cliff into Ouray; really skiing the deep stuff in Telluride, etc. I ended up living in Aspen for 7 years, but this area always drew me back. Wow. I can't wait to watch this one too.

Glad I found you on KZfaq-your footage and editing is beautiful. Loved the the Barbie-I'll show this one to my (adult) sister who collects barbies and does photoshoots with them all over the world! These are great videos to really show the experience of the hikes. I love ridge traverses, but I will have to feel it out to see if I'll be comfortable with ones like this.I know the GoPro can tend to exaggerate exposure. It seems like this isn't a 'one slip up and you die' kind of thing, but a climb requiring careful steps, checking holds, and taking your time-respecting the mountain.

Thanks Forrest! This route is definitely a classic! Definitely a couple short exposed places but reasonable moving carefully. Route choice is key, I went the hard way up the final huge head wall and mistakenly took a tough line on the final summit ridge. If it feels real tough, keep looking is my best advice. Best wishes!

I had a suicidal summer on Mt Wilson. The details are sketchy but we started from Navajo Basin and then came up the glacier. This was an early snow climb with crampons & an experienced buddy to lead. Definitly scared the shit out of me to traverse a large 45 Degree? ice field. It was spring so what the was ice going up was postholing going down. Slow learner....a couple of weeks later the snow was gone. I was leading..I recall loose dirt rock on a lower route and a higher good rock route with IMMENSE exposure. SLOW leaner back on the El Diente-Mt Wilson traverse. Like all of the Wilsons a thousand foot grind on loose talus followed by loose rock & high exposure. REALLY SLOW...from Lizrd Head we bushwhacked to a rough ridge that featured climbing OVER six pinnacles each over 14K, I mostly recall from the ascent a lot of rocks sticking (or not...) out of dirt. And with that I was done, finished and most grateful that Mt Wilson didn't kill me. I thought it was the worse climb ever until going up the western ridge of El Diente. A highly experienced group who were unanamous in calling the route "life threatening"....so that's the Wilsons for you. Better you than me!

I was happy to see that you had Spencer with you. I got enough of a thrill just watching the video. That was a tough one. Love the Navajo Lake trail and Rock of Ages trail. One of our favorite areas. Just got my new RC Controller set up. Easier than using the phone. It will be interesting to see how it works where there is no internet service. Have you had any issues? Barbie was a neat and fun addition to the adventure! 😀👍

Looks a bit out of my comfort zone. We’ll do Wilson Peak first next week and maybe the traverse another day. I heard the Kilpacker route is actually preferred over Navajo Lake route for Mt Wilson due to the crowd and rock fall potential on the other side

I thought this traverse was better and more spicy than the crestone traverse and agree that it's harder. There's also an easier gully to descend on the other side of the Mt. Wilson. From the traverse you go past the summit on the back side and then turn right

I enjoyed the climb. You guys are like strong mountain goats, picking your way through. It was a long one, imo. the ridge traverse was exciting for you, that's cool. I really like the 'slip sliding away' thing toward the end. I laughed. It was good. Glad you didn't get hurt by some hidden rocks under the melting snow. I liked it, the whole thing. Of course you left Barbie for the next lonely hearts club band, right?

Thank you for this Karl! You liked my GoPro footage from the little bear Blanca traverse in Colorado 14ers today and I’m stoked to be tackling the windom grand slam followed by the Wilson trifecta this week! The windom grand slam will be my biggest test since rim to rim to rim but hoping it goes well. And I know doing this a day or even two after will be hard but if I get those done I’m at 57/58 just this summer and all great traverses. Your videos always give me confidence before I go so I appreciate it a lot. Hope one day I’m as good of a cinematographer as you as well! If you ever need someone to do a ridge line feel free to let me know!
