The Chief always amazed me. He doesn't care that Tulio and Miguel lied, because he is happy that both of them left a good impact on the El Dorado people. So that's why he let them go away with some gold, and also didn't argue with them about the lie.

Things some people don’t notice: Altivo (the horse) actually speaks in one scene. Watch it again and notice when they are on the boat (in the waterfall), and first see the city, they are in awe and all say “El Dorado!”....including Altivo! 😆 The armadillo began following the guys because they unknowingly saved him in the jungle. While they were cutting vines (during the song “on the trail we blaze”); a snake was about to attack armadillo but the guys cut the branch it was on, thus saving armadillo’s life. He started following them at that point and it’s probably why he was cool with being used as a ball during the game. I may be speculating this part, but the volcano might have been reacting to the armadillo chasing after one of the golden butterflies. Watch the scene carefully. The volcano becomes active when armadillo is trying to catch a butterfly. Miguel and Tulio are arguing about how to handle the situation and Tulio yells “stop!!” The armadillo immediately stops chasing the butterfly and the volcano then stops erupting. I don’t think it’s a coincidence. 🤷🏽‍♀️ Although if my theory is correct then El Dorado has now been completely destroyed. Armadillo ate one of butterflies during the end credits. 🥺 🦋

@@LilyBirds In the making of the movie, they actually had Bibo (the nam of the armadillo that only stands in the end credits, never spoken in the actual movie) being the or an actual god, but they changed that along with some other things. So you can still say that Bibo actually still MAY be the true god secretly in the actual movie but none of the movie characters realized it. Also; Bibo is almost always close around Miguel and Tulio.

It was so funny how you guys reacted to the adult humor in this. DreamWorks Animation can really go over the top with the humor in their movies. Antz (DreamWorks Animation's first feature) and Bee Movie both adult humor and dialogue that were so weird and over the top, that they were basically made as PG rated adult animated films. You guys should both react to them sometime.

even though Bee made it seem like the male bees do a lot of the work when in reality the female bees do everything, collect honey and pollen, make and mend the hive, etc, the male bees pretty much solely exist to be drones to the queen, that's why in winter (for some species of bees) they're the ones to be pushed out of the hive if food seems scarce

Also in the past I've seen a theory that I really like, about why the volcano starts then stops in response to Tulio and Miguel. The theory suggests that the armadillo is in fact one of the 'gods' in disguise and it helps them to survive, both in the beginning as well as in later parts of the movie (like the ball game and giving Tulio the idea of crashing the pillars). Obviously nothing can be proven but its a very interesting way of explaining the otherwise nigh-impossible volcano scenario.

Like Biblical movies (Prince of Egypt, Joseph King of Dreams) and movies that were edgier than the kind Disney made like Antz or Road to El Dorado. But after they made Shrek as a Disney parody and it was a success they remodeled themselves as a whole after the Shrek formula.

The film has an amazing animation/ art style & a great story, which is a perfect blend of witty comedy & some adult themes lol (like sex & death). One of my favourite parts of the film is definitely the dynamic between Miguel & Tulio - it could've been cool if they had kept to their alleged original plan of making them a gay couple, but I love Chel's character so much that I'm glad they didn't tbh. 32:00 Yeah but he also knows that Miguel and Tulio are good men - many many things but ultimately good men at heart. And they've made his people happy for various reasons including that they removed a lot of power from the tyrannical high priest so now his people aren't scared of him anymore. So him staying would continue to make the people of El Dorado happy. If he did stay they could easily come up with some excuse as to why he's ageing, just say that he's taken on a mortal form so that the people may be at ease with him and that he'll shed that mortal form when it's time for him to leave.

All the songs are by Elton John and they are, mostly for us 90s kids that grew up with this movie, absolutely iconic. I'm not usually an Elton John fan but I often come back to listen to all his music from this movie

Ever since Shrek, Hollywood has realized that those 80s style kids movies when PG meant something are still en vogue. Unfortunately, because the rating system is so out of whack, movies like Frozen get a PG rating when they would have gotten a G in the 90s. Movies like Return To Oz would be PG-13 or R today and they can't market that to kids or families anymore. So we're in that weird limbo where you get a silly, juvenile innuendo in a PG kids movie. PG hasn't meant anything since the mid-90s.

At ±13:00, when they're looking at Tulio & Miguel so strangely, it's because of the prophecy on carved into the stone behind them - two gods (who bear a striking resemblance to the duo) sit astride a rearing beast with a long head and flowing mane (very horse-like) while a native woman (resembling Chel) offers them tribute.

One of my favorite things about that exchange between Miguel and Chief Tannabok is that Chief Tanni asks Miguel if he and Tulio have "big plans in the other world". The fact that Tanni says "other world" instead of "spirit world" was my first hint that he knew that Miguel and Tulio weren't what they claimed to be. Also, my theory is that Tanni knew ever since the feast since he probably knew that gods wouldn't be able to get drunk. Tzekel Khan didn't attend the feast which is why he never found out. But yeah, I think Tanni knew the whole time and just rolled with it because Miguel and Tulio are kind of a vibe lol.

26:56, children didn’t get any of the innuendo (at least not until rewatching it as adults. Also DreamWorks’s first animated movie (to be released not to be made) was Antz which includes the lines “that tunnel will be complete come hell or high water” “I’d rather not drink something that came out of the anus of another creature” “what are you always bitching about” “Damn! Good. Damn good” “Don’t tell that tight-ass anything Weaver” and “I was going to let you become a part of my most erotic fantasies” it was the first animated movie since the Black Cauldron to be rated PG (rather than G or in the case of the South Park movie R). So that was the standard of PG back then. It meant something a lot more akin to The Simpsons movie than to Frozen.

Reportedly, one of Disney’s early abandoned ideas for a “serious” Emperor’s New Groove was a Conquistador-era version of “The Man Who Would Be King”, about two con men who pass themselves off as “kings”, and the scheming native girl who helps them. Five years after Jeffrey Katzenberg faced “plagiarism” rumors over Lion King, he claimed Dreamworks’ El Dorado wasn’t Disney’s version of Rudyard Kipling, but “‘Road to’, get it? It’s a remake of Bob Hope & Bing Crosby! 😃” (This guy couldn’t make “The dog ate my homework” believable. 😂)

26:00, technically speaking it’s not a musical inasmuch as (with one exception) the songs aren’t sung by the characters but as part of the soundtrack. Though (as I understand it) it was originally conceptualized as a musical

Firstly, while it goes without saying, it should still be said; Chel’s fanbase grew exponentially from this movie, and no one can convince me otherwise. Secondly, this is one of the movies people think of when discussing how much they miss Dreamworks’ 2D animated movies, regardless of the problems some of them may have like with Sinbad. That’s not to downplay on their 3D films, not at all. I’ll always love the original trilogies of How to Train Your Dragon, Madagascar, and Kung Fu Panda (I’m a bit cautious with Kung Fu Panda 4). And this isn’t ignoring their 2D output in their Television Animation subsidiary either, I really enjoy She-Ra and Kipo. However, like with Disney, there’s definitely something about 3D animated movies that seemed easier to produce compared to 2D movies, likely not having to draw and clean each frame for most. I’m not against the 3D movies at all, but I wouldn’t mind mixing the pot with both mediums.
