Poblado and Laureles are surely the most famous neighborhoods in Medellin. Both neighborhoods are a great choice when it comes to live in a safe and nice place.
Poblado
Most Expats stay in Poblado especially on their first visit. People prefer to live in Poblado because everybody talks about that area. When you are searching for the safest place to stay in Medellin, Poblado will most likely be the first thing to pop up. That's surely because Poblado is such a nice place to look at and it has everything you might need.
I also have to mention, that for most tourist Poblado might be the best place to stay, especially because of the variety of restaurants, night clubs and event in general.
On the other hand, even though things are in walkable distance, you mostly rather take a taxi instead of walking, because Poblado is really hilly.
We like Poblado and everything that t has to offer but at the end we rather live in a place where we don't have to walk up hill the whole time.
Laureles
Laureles is a beautiful lush green area and is more residential compared to Poblado. It has a great mix of fancy little coffees, bars and restaurant and more traditional Colombian stands, bakeries and restaurants too.
Living in Laureles is perfect for people that like the big city action but like to go home to a quiet place. One of the biggest advantages of Laureles is surely the walkability. It is a mainly flat area and has a lot of cycle-paths too. You can find almost everything you need for a living and don't even have to leave the area if you don't want to.
Downsides is the long distance to a metro, one of the few practical things you can't reach by foot. But taking a taxi to the metro station, usually doesn't cost you more than 3$
Recap
Most of our clients, who are planning to be long-term Expats, loved Laureles. We think that Laureles is way to underrated at the moment, but we see that t is getting more and more attention lately.
For tourists who prefer to party and are not thinking of living in Medellin, Poblado will most probably still be the best area to stay in.
For Expats who are considering to get a car in Medellin, Poblado will surely be an option since the walkability is one of the biggest disadvantages.

One important thing to add is that it's harder to get a good apartment in Laureles.

Pontifical Bolivarian University is there which might be a place to take Spanish on a 1st visit. getting a room in Laureles would, no doubt, be practical.

A normal Airbnb is easy to get, just a good deal on a long term apartment is harder to get.

I will definitely stay in Laureles when I come to Medellin - walkable alone would have sold it for me but I Laureles seems just more down to earth, less touristy. Plus, I want to use my Spanish!

Live at Daly's I just recently stayed in Laureles for the first time after always staying in El Poblano. Being able to walk around really does make a huge difference

I currently Live in the Estadio area close to Laureles... I prefer this area more than Poblado. I am not walking up a mountain every day... that insane...

Laureles all the way. The area close to Hotel Inntu has everything you could want within a 5 block area. Perfect in my opinion.!!

Poblado has a lot Apts available, but you pay gringo prices for everything. On the hand , Laureles is super cool, it has great restaurants, bars and it’s more residential, you will see a lot trees around, it’s flat and walkable, people are very friendly. You will love Laureles.

I’ve been to Medellin twice last year. The first time I was in Medellin I stayed in laureles la 70 hotel el dorado. Nice area also I notice is where the locals party at. Second time I stayed in ciudad del rio hotel ibis middles class area. Nice area as well. I’ve been to el poblado but is not for me. I would rather party with the locals then a lot of tourist

El poblado is higher in the mountains and therefore is usually colder.

I hope eventually you guys travel around Colombia a bit and show other nice cities that are good options. We are also looking at Rio Negro and the coffee triangle, as possible retirement spots. Thanks for the great videos !

Can you do a video on some other areas? Maybe envigado is an area I hear a bit. And any other potential suburbs which could suit expats. Also maybe do some price examples and comparisons on what an average 2bdr apartment costs in each area. Both to purchase and rent.

I live in Envigado. It is very residential and cheaper. From the Home Center, Envigado metro station, I am only three stops from Poblado. I plan to move to Laureles in June to compare. Poblado is US prices and very touristy. The only downside to Envigado is English is vary rarely spoken, but you get an authentic Colombian feel.

I stayed 2 nights in Laureles my first visit to Medellin. More open spaces, less hustle and bustle, access to plenty restaurants stores nearby and not hit w/ the "gringo" prices..Laureles for the win

I think I"d vote for Laureles. One thing I noted checked airlines is it's actually much easier to get to Medellin then places in Equador. (I'm thinking of Columbia as a potential retirement (plan A) or, given everything going on a plan B...if things get out of control in the US.

I have stayed in el poblado before and loved it. Being gay, I prefer to be near the gay clubs. I'm considering going to study Spanish and one of the schools is in laurels. Is it reasonable to take the metro daily to laureles? How long?

My opinion, with the number of hotels and Air B and B available just spend your first month trying a few places and see for yourself. If looking to meet other young travelers I'd say Poblado might be more your style. If interested in a more expat community I prefer Laureles. Neither of these areas are budget conscious locations.

Sure come over to this paradise! The paradise of taxes. Colombia ranked 3rd, 4th and 4th. In 2016, 2017 and 2018 according to PwC. If you want to pay more taxes you can do so in Argentina, Venezuela and Mexico.

Thanks for the comment. First of all, taxes in Colombia are not all black and white. Yes if you earn 7 figures (as a salary), stay out of Colombia. If you earn like 80% of people in the developed countries between USD 20,000k 80,000k, or have a business set up where most of the earning stay in the business (how you should do it anyway) there is nothing to worry about. The lower cost of living will anyway make up for some $100 you have to pay more in Colombia than in for example Panama. Hope it helps.

bingeing on your videos these past few days! you're a darling couple, seem very trustworthy..no plans to move to Columbia but If I ever decided to I'd definitely contact you and get your help.. I've lived abroad before [just briefly, in Denmark, after touring around in western Europe] some years ago..currently living back in my hometown, in the States, to be near a family elder..but thinking about where my next steps will take me once things shift re: that responsibility..have lived in a few different USA places but have left the country only a few times..if this *COVID-19* issue is ever resolved, I'd like to broaden my options for where to next live..would be nice to be able to *EASILY* afford a nice home in a wonderful locale full of nice, down-to-earth people.

was just glancing at Google Maps, how is airport noise in Laureles? as it's in line with the runway, seems that might be an issue.

The airport is not in Laureles. It's farther South but the flight path is over Laureles. Don't be concerned though because very few of the planes are jets. They're smaller propeller driven planes and I can barely hear them.

Jus to add, the airport is not the main international airport. It's smaller and mostly for domestic use.

Most flights are coming from Río Negro which is a city in the southwest of Medellin. Without traffic it is like 45 min away so I wouldn’t worry too much. The local airport in Medellin does have a military base so you might hear some of that noise of helicopters or planes coming/going but not in the middle of the night

Can you do a video on exchange rates and how to bring money into beautiful Colombia without getting penalized on high transfer rates? I've heard there are ways to bypass the transfer fees.

You are limited to the currency you can bring in to the country but then you need to also exchange it. When I have traveled there in the past I just went to Western Union and wired myself the money I wanted. I then went to the mall to pickup the transfer and it’s automatically converted to pesos. The exchange rate is good compared to a lot of other companies. I now live in Medellín the barrio of San Lucas and love it.

There's not a specific one we can recommend. We've never stayed at a hotel in Medellin, we usually use Airbnb and make sure the reviews are good.

Poblado is a million times better. Everyone I know that moved to Laureles moves to poblado once they can afford it. Whats better than both of them is is Salento or Finlandia or Armenia Quindio.

For living your regular life, laureles. For partying and wanting to be seen and be around a bunch of gringos, poblado. For me, poblado is a joke, its amateur night all day and night.
