Thanks for the review. There’s one thing I just can’t let go and always bugs me and that is people who love bass and compare the bass from bookshelf speakers. We know from studies that the bass accounts for an extremely large percentage of our preference in a speaker. If in fact you love bass, which I do too, you are going to use a subwoofer. If you are going to use a subwoofer it seems to me that you would evaluate the speaker from 80 Hz and above. Maybe you could do a separate leaderboard section containing speakers with subwoofer rating.
@ericmann1781
@ericmann1781 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed, when I heard his thoughts on how he places them in the end and admitted how bias his decisions are based purely on bass, I thought it was silly because you don't usually buy bookshelves for bass unless you never heard a subwoofer before and you don't get it. Plus imo anyways, you can't put these under the Elac ARB-51 that cost THAT much more when you can add an SVS 1000 Pro and a decent 80wpc integrated amp and that setup will absolutely destroy the bass of the ARB-51 for the same price. And not only that, you will have an actual hi-fi setup you can even use for home theater instead of just having expensive monitors.

ELAC really needs to rethink their speaker designations and names. I'm into this stuff and have trouble keeping up with it. You can imagine newbies being thoroughly confused by what model is what....The slim difference between Debut and calling something Debut Reference or Uni-Fi 2.0 and "Reference" is enough to make you need a score card to keep up...What's next, the "Debut 3.0 Uni-Fi Reference F62"? Jeez....Oh well, as others have noted, ELAC needs to stop messing in the $600 - $1000 price point range and give us something like a F82 floor stander with two 8 inch drivers in the $1500 to $2000 range...in a cabinet built like the proverbial brick house.... The Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52 speakers are only about 9 months old. Did they REALLY need replacing?

I'm with you on that. Original UB5's all the way. They are difficult to get dialed in, which is why (I suspect) that many folks return them. They need a STRONG amp with a decent amount of current & power to really shine, and the correct placement within a room is critical. Like you, I also use EQ, in my case via an RME ADi-2 DAC. I also run each speaker with a Polk sub, individually crossed through speaker level connections at 80Hz so they don't fight with the amplifier trying to produce those super low tones. Doing this, plus the using the EQ from the DAC opens up the mids and highs on these to spectacular effect! They just sound amazing, and do magical things that I've heard from no other speaker. I have no thought of "upgrading" to the UB5.2 or the Reference.

I think the Uni-Fi Reference base response is tuned more neutral (louder) than the other speakers down to 80hz, where a subwoofer could potentially take over. Using a sub with the previous Uni-Fis might result in a slight dip between 100hz and 80hz, so I can see why the Reference gives up some base extension in order to get the response down to 80hz loud enough.
@clintsherwood4726
@clintsherwood4726 3 жыл бұрын
Makes sense to go for quality down to 80hz first. To rate speakers on low bass output to me seems off, that's what subwoofers are for. I personally look for sound quality above 80hz, where a subwoofer can't fix. So other than the small 20hz to 80hz area, how much better are the Uni-Fi Reference for clarity, tonality, imaging, all of the important things?

It's the rear port of the original causing the increased bass response. Obviously, if the back of the speakers were closer to a wall. If not, then I don't know why either :)
@juanmillaruelo7647

Because (even though the port is in the front) bass is omnidirectional and you'll get "room gain" effects from proximity to walls no matter what. Maybe to a lesser extent, but you still have to "pull back" the speakers from the walls.

Not much on the distinction between the voicing of each speaker. The measurements don't really describe how they sound, other than the obvious relatively flat readings. Would've liked to have heard them A, B, as you did with the UB5 & UB52's. That would've been more helpful. Most of us who own the UF5's or UB52's would love to hear them beside the UBR or UFR's to see if the reference line are worth an upgrade.

That’s interesting, I didn’t know that Andrew put an emphasis on off axis in his designs. I have the UB5s and a Peach Tree Nova SE220, the combo was starting to sound a little too bright from a toed in setup. So I pointed them straight into the room and didn’t quiet fix the issue * Sidenote - I felt that I lost some imaging but that was expected because they were no longer toed in*. Since I didn’t get the results I had a crazy thought and decided to toe the speakers out, not only did it make it less fatiguing but the interesting thing is I had better imaging than when it was toed in.

Flatter overall response is fine, but when combined with less bass, you end up with a thin sounding speaker. I am with you regarding bass; it is a " must have" for me and I will add a subwoofer to get it if necessary. Good review pointing out the differences between the 3 versions.

Add subwoofer, and it ticks all the boxes. (Surprised me a little: at first glance: they seemed to have stuck a much heftier woofer than before. Or is it just "looks" and no "woof"?) Not exactly what I expected. I thought they were turning a "close to perfect" speaker into a "perfect" one. And they slid it into the next costlier tranche of speakers. Maybe looks count. It resembles the original Debut 6. Yes, the one with stonking bass. And it looks great.
@juanmillaruelo7647
@juanmillaruelo7647 3 жыл бұрын
I doubt it sounds "wimpy" or "thin". Put it a little closer to the wall. It's easier to boost certain parts of the FR via EQ than to fix a gaping hole in the mids that many V response speakers suffer from (the "disco smile"). And then you have to call Danny at GR to send you a new, expensive crossover to patch things up and give it "presence", "meat on the bone". Straight line FR out of the factory is best. Then we can get our EQs and subs and "season to taste".
@juanmillaruelo7647
@juanmillaruelo7647 3 жыл бұрын
Extended high frequencies give you a broader listening window. You can be a little more "off axis" and still enjoy the imaging and soundstage the unifi gives you.. These are very well engineered speakers, but it's hard to get good bass out of small enclosures, ...and when you do you usually get less efficiency. Good small speakers need plenty of current. So this is a compromise juggling bass/efficiency/sound quality. Want more bass? You need a bigger cabinet. Or a sub.

At least Andrew is honest with his specs which can't be said for other brands. If you need more bass my train of thought is get a subwoofer or two. Maybe we were just spoiled with the original Debuts and Uni-Fi's, but quite honestly...I've been really disappointed in his recent designs in that regards. The beauty of his original Elac speakers was that a sub was truly optional. The tonality is best described by the frequency response graph. Uni-Fi UB5, awesome bass but lowered treble response, Uni-Fi 2.0 UB52, more treble than UB5 but still has a lower response compared to flat, and less bass extension than the UB5. The resonance at around 585hz that was discovered causes highs to sound harsh because it's a high-pitched squeak sound which I originally thought was harsh treble. The Uni-Fi UBR62 Reference has the most accurate mids and highs I've heard form a passive speaker, performs excellent off-axis, and provides great sound stage and imaging, but lacks deep bass extension.

I actually use the UBR62's for desktop paired with the IOTAVX stack and a Monolith 788 dac/headphone amp and it was the best decision I ever made. The soundstage and imaging surprised me considering how close to the wall and nearfield I have them, so I don't understand why you wouldn't recommend them and push for monitors instead. They are absolutely phenomenal for gaming, and they scale great when pushed at higher volumes, especially compared to Q150's, Kali Audio IN5's, Presonus Eris E5 XT and Polk R100's. The bass is admittedly lacking but it is very quick and punchy, it's very clear and detailed and it blends exceptionally well with an SVS 1000 Pro which helps make the setup equally phenomenal for music, and at about the same price as the ARB-51 with a less pricey integrated amp, this setup is an absolute killer that can even be used for a home theater setup. In my opinion, you can't throw these under the bus just because you don't think there's enough bass since that's what subwoofers are for, especially when you put them under ARB-51's that are over double the price.

Yes still love them, I did recently switch them out for Focal Aria 906's since December but I didn't consider them to be an upgrade, just more of a different sound and space savings. Well not much space savings since the 906's can't be put right on the wall like the UBR62. I plan on switching them back in soon and changing the top of my desk to a slab 33" deep and 54" to 56" wide. Consider the Grado SR-60x @$99, but the SR-80x at $125 is much better and more open sounding, and some would say well worth the price.

Joe i am seriously offended (respectfully) with your leaderboard choices. How could you put a boxy sounding Denton's 85 and put the 2.0 UB52 below it!? You need to do a Denton 85 vs 2.0 UB52 for the honor of Andrew Jones ;)

Ha. The Denton is only boxy in looks, not in sound.

Darker sound, similar to the original UB5's, but excellent value if you get them for around $99/pair. They can play as loud or as deep as the original UB5's. I have a review of them up from a few years back.

Your top is confusing! Please, edit it. On best overall sound you put R200 over Klipsh Fives but on under 1000$ top you do vice versa. What?!
@joentell
@joentell 3 жыл бұрын
I explain in each video my reasoning. I agree I can be confusing but by no means are these rankings absolutes. Best overall sound regardless of price is different than best under $1000 because feature set on powered speakers is also a consideration. Once you add an amp to many of the passive speaker's in that category, the price is over $1000. So those columns are about value proposition.

All about confusion these days🙂 Other reviews says the bass is excellent and more/or the same as ub52. But more detailed. I think they just Need juice! Alot of power. And then you will feel the bass even.. No reciever here. Go for something like hegel h120, rotel ra1592, nad c388 and so on:) even better with these would be a powerful tube amp like primaluna dialouge premium probably. I will test this. If its not enough subwoofer it is

@joentell
@joentell 3 жыл бұрын
Maybe you're right, but anyone using a sub will probably want to use an AVR with the proper DSP to blend the sub with the main speakers. In that case, the old ones were fine when you cut them off at 60hz+ and the room correction would help flatten out the response across the crossover range. My concern is the person wanting to use these with no sub. I want them to know what to expect.
