THIS performance IS INSANE. The parlando style of Stritch was so idiomatic America everyman/woman fed up 1950's style. Her entire style was thrillingly entertaining. And the spurned message always strong.

A true treasure of lyric interpretation. One of a kind! No other like a Stritch song of story telling.

OMG I'm crying. I'm a huge young fan of Gypsy and this was a moment I'll never forget. Why was She not casted in any production. Why did they not cast her. She really was a gem missed.

She was originally casted as Rose in the 1973 London production, but she wasn't so famous then, so Angela Lansbury played Rose in London production instead of Elaine.

What an amazing Rose she would have made on stage. A real missed gem of an opportunity.

She was supposed to do the revival Lansbury starred in. She was replaced when her name could not raise the funds to open the show.

She is the only one that can speak through an entire song and still sounds good... She is an actress more than a vocalist, and this is a thing in musicals, that in opera don't work and is what make them different one from the other (And is not the dialogue vs recitative stuff, because there is non-Italian opera with dialogues too, but when it comes to sing opera is more about the music, even in an interpretation of a more attached to the libretto artist like Callas).

A brilliantly intelligent reading of an iconic song. The lady was an astonishing, unique talent, not everyone's cup of tea but she'll do for me!!

A terrific and in a sense, a more accurate interpretation of Mama Rose, than has ever been given on stage. Being well over 60 years of age, and a strong admirer of Gypsy Rose Lee, have seen ' dozens' of her interviews and read of her, and in her own 'POV'. And read her autobiography, and clearly Ms Stritch's take is damn close to vocalizations that Miss Lee described about her mother. While, Miss Merman had the vocal powerhouse, her take was just too 'cleaned up'. Mama was a woman, who seemed to always be on the verge of a nervous break down, and a hot-to-trot 'fiend for sex, from strongly built men, BUT only after she married them. To her constant harassment of Gypsy, for being, just one step away from being a prostitute for being a stripper, Miss Stritch just echoes the inner angst of a woman, who though she really and truly Love children, never really wanted any.

The talking part- she's using the truncated speech that's heard on the Tyne Daly OBC recording.

I understand many of the comment addressing Elaine Stritches perfirmance. Let me just throw in....this is not Gypsy. This is a number from Gypsy thats included in Elaine's cabaret show.

My opinion: she expresses the anger that isn't present in a lot of the interpretations.

Really? I’ve been watching rendition free rendition and 90% of the time it’s very anger focused. To the point of being over the top in some cases.

She expressed anger in just about every song and line she ever delivered. It was readily accesible to her.

I’ve seen many roses, lupone, lavin, Buckley, peters, Daly, milder. Lupone was better at encores than on broadway where she was lupone. peters was vulnerable, but I loved her and that production. Tyne Daly was the best I’d seen. But stritch would have been the definitive Rose, who must have been quite a character in life. I believe she killed a guy. Stritch is raw and that voice, or lack of, has the ability to give an actor’s interpretation.

I never got Elaine Stritch. She seemed to yell everything and seemed angry all the time. Plus, she couldn’t sing. Her whole persona was unpleasant. Why she is considered a musical theatre icon is beyond me.

Odd rendition. Sorry, but she speaks a lot at the star and so its slow going and there are some issues with her intonation.

I am not an Elaine Stritch fan and this version of "Rose's Turn" solidifies my aversion to Elaine Stritch, the performer. She is a powerful presence but she did not attempt to be Rose ... rather, it's " Elaine's Turn."

It's an old Stritch summoning as much vocal wherewithal as she can; it's a dramatic telling of a song, essentially beyond her at this point, effective in places, but generally wayward. The lead-in "scene" is best--is very good indeed.
