Cut-Rate Commander - Episode 62 - Featuring Elas il-Kor Sadistic Pilgrim from Dominaria United

The newly compleated Kor Elas il-Kor Sadistic Pilgrim from Dominaria United is taking a break from spreading the good word of Phyrexia to helm our latest build, intent on using her powers to heal us while harming our opponents as her congregation grows.
In this build, we'll among to get maximum value out of Elas's creature based ETB/Death Life Gain/Life Drain triggers by going as wide as possible with tokens and, in typical aristocrats fashion, sacing them away for value and drain our opponents. Of course, that means we'll be running plenty of token generation to flood our board with sac fodder, as well as sac outlets to get those tokens into the bin to trigger Elas's drain and additional death matters payoffs to get us even more value or deal even more damage into our opponents life totals - eventually overwhelming our opponents with our congregation of fanatical followers as we use them to siphon away the last of our opponents life.

I'm an Orzov fan and love this commander,the way she dissolves life totals is insidious.Elenda,the dusk rose,while not budget can have a huge impact in this style of deck.

Elas is certainly a powerhouse not doubt! And your right - Elenda, the Dusk Rose can be devastating on a already wide board with a free sac outlet, effectively allowing us to replace all the tokens we sac when we sac her to and allowing us to take another massive chunk out of our opponents life totals (while padding our own of course).

This is a great video! I put Necromancer's Covenant in my Ratadrabik deck for the flavor. Totally forgot about Tormod. And I knew Myriad was going to be powerful, but didn't realize just how powerful Myriad would be with Ratadrabik himself!

I recently built a Tiny Leaders deck with Elas and Lurrus as the Compainion and this deck can thrive on a low curve!

Yeah, a really low to the ground curve version of the build can certainly be very effective, no doubt!

It's funny, I have a cleric deck that almost always under performs and I just added Eli's el kor to it. But this sold me to swap it over to this deck. Great video

Glad you're enjoying the builds! Sadly (or thankfully depending on who you ask) I have not build a stax build on the channel yet (as far as I can recall) but if the opportunity presents itself to include a stax commander in the polls, I'll see what I can do!

Welcoming Vampire is a card one could consider. Mentor of the meek is another option for additional card draw. Teyza Karlov is another card which would work well, with tokens and death trigger's.

Good suggestions! Welcoming Vampire and Mentor of the Meek work indeed make superb draw sources as all our small tokens come into play, and Teyza Karlov pretty much just doubles the rate at which our commander drains out our opponents.

Hi! Thanks for the build, I actually constructed it and it's super fun. Especially when you win due to opponent casting a boardwipe and you have 3 sources of 1 dmg to everyone on creatures dying on the board. Now I have a question for upgrading. I plan to put Exquisite Blood for the Infinite combo with Vito for example and Phyrexian Tower as an extra sac outlet plus mana source, but I'm not sure what to take out of the deck. For the first one I was thinking maybe the Curse? Also an enchantment but better in early game but for the land I'm not sure. Maybe one of the 3 fetch lands? Thanks!

Some more expensive upgrades include: Wedding Announcement, Divine Visitation, Finale of Glory, Bastion of Remembrance, Welcoming Vampire, Curse of Relentless Dead, and Black Market. Enjoy!

I thought about it and eventually went with the more traditional root, but maybe I'll revisit Elas later on with the Lurrus version of folks are interested!

@@bloodforrugbyify in the set ikoria there were cards that had the word companion on them where they functioned much like how partner works. Each companion card had restrictions for it to be eligible as your companion, in this case lurrus is a white/Black card that states that no permanents CMC (now called mana value) is over 2 is allowed in the starting deck. If you meet this condition you can have lurrus as your companion where you can retrieve it from its own zone (can't remember if it's just sideboard) by spending 3 generic at sorcery speed to add it to your hand and you can only do it once per game so if it gets exiled it's gone unlike commanders. In the case of commader companions are the 101st card in your deck as they don't count towards the 100 card limit for deck building

out of curiosity, what are the first things you would cut in this for ashnod's altar and suture priest ? I'm also looking at maybe fitting in Elesh norn, mother of machines - Drivnod, Carnage Dominus - Staff of compleation - Welcoming Vampire - Phyrexian Arena

I feel like Ayara, First of Locthwain and maybe Bolas’s Citadel would be good additions to the build. For card draw and card advantage, a way cheat things out with our life total, and a way to drain our opponents. Other than that an excellent build

Good suggestions! Ayara sadly didn't make it in due to budget constraints but would make a fine addition for the sac effect, draw, and additional drain she provides, and Bolas's Cidtadel is indeed a fine way to covert our excess life into draw!

@@GrazzetMTG if you were to include both Ayara and Bolas Citadel, which cards would you remove? I might have had some luck with packs in the past and got those cards. By the way, great list! If you have other non budget alternatives to make the deck more flashy I would love to know (maybe part of a long term update for the base deck).

martyr's cause has been a champion in my deck, hard to remove sac outlet that can prevent damage to yourself, your creatures and others when needed...

Interesting choice - it is certainly a solid free sac outlet and I can see it doing work to keep our life totals nice and high alongside or life gain!

@@GrazzetMTG Yeah I have had it really save me in some games with flying commanders especially, another really powerful card that's a bit out of the price range of your budget here is tombstone stairwell it really puts gasoline on the fire quickly. Another great token generator as well has been Elenda the Dusk Rose given how many creatures are dying on our board. Great video as always Grazzet

Storm herd should always find a place in this deck. Usually 40 life in, sack em all win the game. Best 1 card bomb in this deck.

I personally have mixed feeling about Storm Herd - it is undoubtedly a very powerful effect but CMC 10 is REALLY steep, often making it a brick if its draw into until the really take game. Still, you that's not an issue for you, then by all means run it, since if this resolves, you will likely be able to win the game on the spot with the appropriate sac outlets.

@@GrazzetMTG if i cast i win. Deck average around 2.8 but i always leave the insta win for fun. No tutors, no infinite combs, no fast mana, no free spells and i still win most times.

Is there a particular reason for having Evolving Wilds/Terramorphic Expanse in a two colour deck? They find basics that come in tapped, so it feels like they’re essentially worse guildgates in a deck that doesn’t have land recursion/landfall synergies.

Good question! Personally, I like including any cards that will thin my deck, no matter how little it may statistically help the consistency of the build. 1 less basic in the deck is 1 less basic I have to worry about drawing into later - but again this my personal taste. If you find that dual taplands work better for you (as they can offer more flexibility) then feel free to swap in for them.

The deck basically builds itself, just head over to EDHrec and have a look at Winona’s page. You want early non-human creatures and tokens, then play Winota once you have 2-3 of them (that can attack that turn). As payoffs, I like to choose humans that create more non-human tokens to fuel your next attack. Also pack some protection for Winota because she can be very explosive and people will want to remove her quickly.

Do you have a moment to talk about our lord and saviour, Lifedrain Ping Sources? Ageless memes aside, amazing vid as always! Now let's see... Urza vs Mishra. Two war-criminals of multiversal proportions, two brothers that lead to ruination... and I can't pick which one should get the vid. On one hand, we could have Urza have another piece of media under his belt to try and fix all the messed up stuff he has done (including eugenic supersoldier shenanigans, nuclear warfare and causing of several Ice Ages), on the other hand we could have Mishra get some spotlight for once and maybe see if his tragedy could have been prevented... I will leave this one to you, Grazzet. I am too attached to the original Brothers' War book to pick. Day 445 of waiting for the Grazzet face reveal. Did you know that a trailer for a new Magic mobile game came out a while ago? Crazy, I know.
