Welcome to the first episode of Elasmocast, where On Point Fossils owner/founder Ben Goode discusses everything and anything chondrichthyan!
On this episode, Ben is joined by University of Alabama masters student Chase Egli to shoot out their picks for the top 10 macro-predatory sharks of all time. For this list, only Selachians, or 'true sharks', will be covered.

Incredibly scholarly and entertaining at the same time, even for a viewer with no background in paleontology.

Hemipristis Serra deserves an honourable mention, I have a 2 1/8" tooth and have heard of teeth 2 1/4" or more. The largest Meg I know of was Gordon Hubbell's at 7 3/8"

Hemipristis serra could definitely compete on this list; especially the individuals that possessed 2”+ teeth!

Wow. Seriously 2" Hemipristis serra teeth are from the king of the king of the carcharhiniforms. Here in FL I know those that big only come from South FL around Arcadia (the largest H. serra I've dug up is from a south tributary of the Peace river, 1.5 inch upper lateral, huge root very big serrations), in a slightly later time period than northish / mid peace river that's more mid or late miocene maybe. I've heard there were less megs in early Pliocene, probably why H. serra maxed out in size in early Pliocene or so on average, they naturally adapted to try to fill that niche... of course they're most likely my all time fav species, I can go on about their rise/ fall and evolution, I have a visual video about it.... and I made the first fossil shark podcasts (Elasmobranch evolution podcast, hard af to make/ edit quality solo podcasts and not burn out, that's largely why I only have a handful of episodes. I wouldn't call it dead tho, I made 1 episode so far this year.... tho lately I've fallen in love with North FL impressive springs and rivers, much more time sensitive to fight for defending those lately, sadly.... but I'll always have a soft spot for mega predatory sharks, and I'm beyond excited for hearing all this episode and beyond :]

What about the cow sharks?! Notidanodon was a champion!

Notidanodon could hang with some of the others on this list for sure!

7 (maybe 8) foot per inch is a better estimate of size.

Yes, especially for more modern Lamniformes, 10 feet an inch is a very rough generalization, and the 7-8 foot range per inch may be more accurate of an estimation.

Good episode. A bit top down perspective, but still fresh takes, keeping it real... people don't realize how absolutely lengthy and diverse shark evolution/ even diverse modern sharks still are... only when there's 6 different unique fossil shark podcasts will I feel that's enough maybe xD.... good to know there's 2 now, mine (elasmobranch evolution podcast (all episodes on youtube, majority of them except the newest one on PodBean), and I have several other videos of fossils and extinction/ slideshows/ etc. fossil talk, especially from around 2017-2019) and this one maybe. Keep it up, don't be attached to results/ comments or view count, today's people are deluded and only mostly drawn to click bait and no attention spans.... Almost thought u guys wouldn't mention Parotodus lol... Galeocerdo eaglesomi and Paleocarcharodon (superficially look like GW, but evolved independently, and in a time period NOT known for big serrated toothed sharks) might be in my top 10

Thank you for your kind words! We agree, Galeocerdo eaglesomi (especially the monstrous ones that used to inhabit what is now the Western Sahara region of Morocco) would have been fearsome predators. Paleocarcharodon from Morocco could reach very large sizes, and were likely apex predators in the Paleocene.
