On the second episode of the Elasmocast Podcast, host Ben Goode brings on special guest Wayne Itano to discuss a paper that was published in 2023 through the Spanish Journal of Paleontology. Wayne was the first author of the publication, which reveals the discovery of a possible 130 million year ghost lineage of a bizarre flat, ray-like group of ratfish known as the Squalorajoids. The group was previously known from the genus Squaloraja, described from the Jurassic of Europe. The new publication describes Sulcacanthus schachti, which dates back to the Mississippian of Indiana, USA.
Wayne Itano is affiliated with the University of Colorado, Boulder, Museum of Natural History. His primary research focus is on Paleozoic Chondrichthyans, of which he has published numerous research papers on.
