Thanks Nick, great review as always. As soon as you said "this is fantastic" I went out to buy it.

"he only takes 3 mysteries to complete" you mean, like every other old god there is? (except that one other)

Just played it tonight and it definitely adds a lot of time... we could almost always finish in 4 hours (including set up, basic rule expansion, and take down), but we were most likely looking at 5 or 5 1/2 hours with the new content. Still fun, but I think the generic location cards need to be doubled and maybe some more gate locations -- we keep seeing the same things of those. Besides that it doesn't need much more and feels pretty complete to me.

I'm a big Arkham fan, so-so on Eldritch. I've been taking a see how it goes approach to EH, but I think I can safely say that this expansion officially pushes EH over the edge into the same territory as AH. Granted you don't have to use all the new stuff, but the setup time of the two games is about the same now, and I don't think EH provides the same amount of fun as AH. It just want designed to be that way. It was meant to shrink the experience down so that you could get a similar experience in less time, but now I think both games are about equal in terms of length, fiddliness, etc... It's just that EH feels a lot more artificial compared to AH. So yeah, I think this is where I get off the EH train and return to my preferred way of experiencing the Lovecraft universe.

the focus mechanic seems like a massive game changer to me. giving up a clue token for a re-roll always felt bad as did wasting actions in the wilderness. the extra stuff is neat though im still tryin to absorb forsaken lore so im not sure when ill be getting that to the table but im definitely incorporating focus right into my games.

Played the expansion this past weekend vs. Rise of the Elder Things and maybe we were really lucky, but we won with the Doom track at 14. There wasn't much tension at all. Still fun though.
@StefanLopuszanski9 жыл бұрын
Wow... all 4 objective cards too? You must have been insanely lucky or something -- we just did it and lost all of our Doom and probably would have lost officially (but we were at 4 hours of playing and wanted to call it).

Stefan Lopuszanski Don't you just have to solve 3 of the objectives / mysteries?
@StefanLopuszanski9 жыл бұрын
SamuraiHonor It is 4 with the Elder Things -- normally it is 3 but they have a special condition.

So if I wanted to play one of the new characters in just the base game how much of the new content would I have to add to make it work? (example I know Muldoon starts with the carbine rifle which is expansion only so that would be added).
@boardgamebrawl8 жыл бұрын
+Speedy That's it, really. Just add what is explicitly necessary. But the thing is, much of the content - the items, the encounter cards for all of the existing decks, the characters, etc - can all be blended in seamlessly regardless of which Great Old One you're fighting and regardless or whether or not you use the extra maps. Just mix it all in.
@SpeedyDePalma8 жыл бұрын
Ok cool thanks for the info on that, I'm kinda green to the game but am liking it so far and I'll tell you videos of people playing i waaaaaaaay easier to understand than trying to read the rules. I've gotten more out of the mechanics from let's plays than the rule book.

+Board Game Brawl Hi, great reviews and info, I have been playing solo (3 investigators) and loving it, i just got under the pyramids, mountains and strange remnants. I was just wondering a good strategy as to what expansion cards I should mix in if any, or should I keep each separate and just add in when playing each expansion? Regards, Wade (ps I would love to just add them all, but worried this may ruin what seems a pretty well balanced game at present...)
@SpeedyDePalma8 жыл бұрын
Ok another follow up question after looking over some of the new cards but if I don't add any expansion encounter cards then I can't use the unique ally and unique tome cards with the original game yes? (make sense as it would be kind of pointless to have a dog sled team).

My copy arrived today! Love EH, I doubt that will ever change. However I will say, I don't enjoy playing against Yig. It sounds like the the spend a clue to gain an artifact Antartica space will help alleviate the feeling of never winning against Yig. Excited!

Love EH, but currently a student with little money to spend, the pricetag on the expansion is a huge number. Costs as much as the boardgame itself, you get slightly less than the boardgame and it convolutes the game. I can see how this game makes it so that either antarctica is central to your game, or is there and not utilized, because you really don't have the time to go there. In all honesty, I would've been fine with an expansion without the antarctica part. More investigators, more mechanics to play around with, but the extra area and the rules that only a large part of the new content is used there, is just a bit éh. I would've probably preferred a lower price tag, with a more general expansion, for the game as a whole and not a specific area + it's special content. So, depending on what the price does, or the next expansion will be, I fear I might be steering clear of this one. (that doesn't prohibit me from playing a game tonight with the first expansion though!)

Totally agree over 4 is too many and less than 4 is too little. If I play a 2 player game I use 2 randomly dealt investigators per player.

Great job, Nick. I love the expansion, but agree gameplay is stretching longer. With hindsight, it seems the base game was lacking and limited without the Focus action and choices/options provided here. The new investigators and their abilities are amazing, the spells are fantastic, and the double-sided cards - especially the unique assets - leave me shocked with some of their reverse sides.
@elew67749 жыл бұрын
Am I right that you only use the Antarctica board and cards with certain Old ones? More investigators, and basic deck cards are always welcome. The Adventure deck seems cool. Note: Every game I have been in has lasted 6+ hours with the basic so I do not know if I will want to use the Antarctica board often.
@boardgamebrawl9 жыл бұрын
Yeah, only the Rise of the Elder Things and one or two of the new Prelude cards make you bring out the Antarctica board.

Board Game Brawl What about the extra cards for the base cards (Items, statuses, ect). do you have to keep them separate and only use them with the mountains of madness? Im strongly debating on buying this, however if im going ot be constantly pulling cards out and putting cards back in, then im not gonna bother with it, the game already takes 15 mins to setup and thats with my custom inserts I made.

Bring on Nyarlathotep and Hastur in the mini Yig like expansions and then I think they can stop adding things so it doesn't get overly clunky like Arkham. No more game boards PLEASE
