Let me simplify this for you... the Constitution says that the states get to elect the president. Not the people. The states can select whatever process they want to distribute their electoral votes, including throwing darts at a dartboard. The political parties are private clubs. They can use whatever process they want, including rolling dice, to select a nominee. Originally only the House of Representatives was by direct vote. The Senate was made a direct vote by Constitutional Amendment. If you don't understand this information, you will not understand how elections run.
@tsafa
@tsafa 4 жыл бұрын
@Star Star they try to get the people involved to the extent that they get to know the candidates. So the primary process is not about the people picking a party candidate, it's about the people getting to know the party selected candidate. At least on the Democrat side anyway with the delegates. The Republicans do not have delegates.
@Marvintronkys
@Marvintronkys 4 жыл бұрын
@Star Star Republicans can vote in the primaries to sabotage the Democratic nominee (the Democrats can do the same thing to the Republican nominee ). However, if the Democratic nominee that the Republicans voted for beats their party nominee, then they'll have to live with the guilt of leading the opposition to victory.
@SimonSozzi7258
@SimonSozzi7258 4 жыл бұрын
@Star Star Also, many states have closed elections where you have to be registered Democrat beforehand to participate. In California they're allowing "Same day registration" or "Crossover Ballot" but only because the democratic party was taken to court here for them to open up their process. In NYC where I used to live...you had to be registered Democrat 6 months in advance! Independents have to switch 6 months in advance or they're shut out. It's a "Private Party".
@willnash7907
@willnash7907 4 жыл бұрын
@@SimonSozzi7258 It's a terrible dilemma between opening up the process and risking undue interference and closing it and risking legal backlash, both compromise the essence of democracy. There is no clear solution because this is just another symptom of an inadequate system that just fails to represent it's citizens, the extend to which American democracy fails is the extend to which it's not democratic enough. First past the post elections don't work, parochially regimented elections don't work, proxy voting doesn't work and above all, systems that compromise the integrity of the voting process by opening it up to rampant bribery and lobbying will never deliver on the promise of democracy. If ever there was a time for political revolution in the United States it's now. Now that there is still time for it to be civil, non-violent and with an eye to democratic legitimacy.

Sort of. Run on a party, get enough votes, get a spot in the primaries, people will select the candidate that way. Then, there is a second round of voting so the president gets elected. The party bosses do not pick the candidate; the people (supposedly) do.

How do they work? The people in charge close polling stations in poor and/or minority neighborhoods, or other places where the demographic is not favoring the candidate they want. Then you have long lines of voters at the only places available, which are running out of ballots due to poor supply, glitching voting machines, or they give you "provisional ballots" that often aren't even counted. And then an old guy in the early stages of dementia, who has not even been campaigning in the state, and has been telling people to vote for Trump or someone else, forgetting who he's talking to, or where he is..... Somehow he wins.
