Thursday, April 25 1979.
Footage of former Nigerian President and candidate for the presidency in 1979, Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, leader of the Nigerian People's Party (NPP), refuting claims made by Michael Ani, the chairman of the Federal Electoral Commission (FEDECO), that he had failed to pay taxes for the past three years.
He was speaking to a group of supporters at the Eko Hotel in Lagos.
Transcript:
"In defence of my honour, and with due deference to those concerned, I submit that the statement of Michael O. Ani, Chairman of the Federal Electoral Commission, about me, namely that I did not pay any income tax during 76-77 at all, is absolutely false and unfounded. That is number one. Two, his statement that I paid tax in arrears in subsequent years, is also misleading and false. His statement that I paid in instalments is also false, and his statement that I submitted my returns after he had written to my party is also false."

I love how the issue was resolved. While his supporters were preparing for a show down, he said he is going to court. He went to court and presented evidence of tax payments and was cleared by the court to contest. Age is an asset. If his supporters had resoterd to show down, the disqualification would not have been lifted. RIP, Zik of Africa

With all these clips you are uploading, I hope more Nigerians will watch them so that in the advent of discussion of the past, their views would have substance not insults and name calling. Day by day, watching these clips, I am having broader insights of what happened before and after I was born in Nigeria. Thank you very much.

The candidate of the Labour Party, who is touted as the symbol of a "new Nigeria," has assets and companies tucked away in tax/secrecy havens. It's a shame that our politics has devolved in this manner
