Bowl turners are typically scroungers. They’re constantly on the lookout for cool looking logs they can turn into bowls. Once you’ve got the log, how do you handle it to easily and safely turn it into a wood turning blank? Here’s one approach.

I don't know bout you guys but I get a high everytime I see a chainsaw going through wood logs... and when the inside reveals, pure ecstasy.

Very good upload. I have been turning for about 5 years (an amateur) but about 6 months ago I did a guy a good turn. I didn't realise then but one of his jobs is cutting down or removing fallen trees. He keeps supplying me with some lumber most of which is fantastic. Trying to cut it up on my band saw was killing it so I recently bought an electric chain saw. It's just great and avoids the carbon monoxide fumes plus I don't annoy my neighbors with the noise of a gas powered one.

I have an electric chain saw I have had for about 20 years ..Still going strong!

I use a Ryobi 40V. Sharpen by clamping the bar in a vice and using a diamond round file in my Dremel. Be sure to get the angle right and focus on the cutting edge; just like a chisel.

George ... Looks like you could make use of a log processing center! Minnesota Woodturners designed one several years ago ... makes this sort of work a lot easier!

I have been using a skip tooth regular chain on my electric chain saw. I just heard about a ripping chain for longitudinal cutting logs in half. They are supposed to do a faster better job. Anyone have any experience with ripping chains?

The new DeWalt 40v chainsaw is great for these type of tasks.

Great idea to screw it to a board, will definitely do that next time. However, would it not give you even more safety and a better work posture if you propped the board up on some 4 by 4s?

+Jacob Jonsson It is a good idea to adjust it so that it is comfortable and ergonomic for you, particularly if you will be doing this repetitively throughout the day. There is nothing wrong with the approach that you have indicated, as long as you ensure that the platform is solid and will remain stationary during the cutting operation. (ZD: 3353)

I have both and they each have there place most time I need to use the gas saws
