This week’s tutorial is another exciting installment in our “Fundamental Series”. The fundamental frequencies of an electric guitar; understanding these fundamental frequencies can be a key factor in bettering your engineer skills. Website: soundoracle.net/
Electric guitar can be a powerful sounding instrument with a vast amount of depth & harmonics. Electric guitar has the ability to play a lead role and/or be a pivotal part of structuring the rhythm & chord progression. Guitar by itself can take up a lot of frequency space; however, adding distortion & electricity to a guitar adds brand new harmonics & frequencies to the mix & it can take up quite a bit of areas on the frequency spectrum.
In this video, we discuss a detailed analysis of the fundamental frequencies of an electric guitar. We will talk about & demonstrate what specific boosted frequencies will help an electric guitar bite & have an aggressive edge. We also take a look at different frequencies that should be cut to avoid muddiness, overcrowding, & unwanted buildup throughout your mix.
As with any aspect of music, the type, brand, & style of an electric guitar & song vary with frequencies; however, these key elements will point you in the right direction of an energetic sounding electric guitar. Your listeners & fans will enjoy the clean edge these techniques bring to your electric guitar without sounding muddy or thin.
Follow along as professional engineer Eric “Realistic” Michael gives you a step-by-step guide on choosing the right frequencies to boost & cut for an electric guitar.

This was a great demonstration on the fundamentals of managing that guitar frequency. Been doing a lot research on this and it seems there is a lot to be gained from cutting out the ‘noise’.

Hi. First of all, thanks for the video. It's very instructive. I have a question: would it help for live situations if I followed this guidelines with an eq pedal? Would it influence my sound even more if I ran that eq into the fx loop of my amp? Cheers!

Will you please make a detailed video on eq-ing clean guitar? like how to make guitar with humbucker pickups sound like single coil and also how to brighten up the dull sounds of clean guitar by post processing. This video helped me a lot, thanks!

Thank You! Second video I watched, was exactly the kind of video I was looking for. I don't use software, just got back into playing almost 2 years ago. (Played for 14 years when I was younger) And I've been having a blast learning so much more this time around in the internet age. I just ordered this "Free Your Tone" brand 10 band EQ analog unit with a digital interface. Can save 99 presets. I'm stoked! This video was so perfect, I'm going to watch again and take notes. So, do you always cut off the high and low for any sound you're going for? Or, are there exceptions to mind? Also, I been wondering. Can you find noise in your guitar rig if you use pedals and cut that out as well as any noise gate can with EQ? Or do noise gates cut noise from something that has nothing to do with EQ? You mentioned the "pluckier" guitar last. Will that area make a non-plucky guitar more plucky if you want? Last, I'm wondering, ha sorry, I'm wondering so much. Theoretically, with using a 10 band EQ, do you think it's like I could take my Jackson Monarkh humbucker guitar and make it sound like a Fender, Gibson, exc? Make humbuckers sound like single coils? Or is more that when you EQ a guitar, you can only clean up your tone as far as your instrument naturally sounds like?
