The punishment?
Electric shocks!!!
The goal of this electricity challenge video is to combine language learning with fun... Of course we don't use electric shocks in our real classes... but we do like to have fun during our classes!

I don't know the rules of 'de' and 'het', it just always comes natural to me. And I think to a lot of other dutchies as well. So even I learned something today!

Jasper Boonstra there isn’t really a rule except for plural and diminitive forms, and a few others. For French or German people, for example it comes natural as well

Er zijn wel meer regels hoor. Volgens mij heeft het ook met de geslachten te maken alleen dat is in het Nederlands moeilijk te zien. Ik herinner me dat onzijdige woorden 'het' zijn en zowel mannelijke als vrouwelijke woorden 'de'

@@ItsALifetime haha. I've always made the joke: What dutch beer brand can people identify and pronounce the second they taste it: Grolsch (explaination: so many dutch g-sounds mades it sound like you're throwing up. ie: a joke at the expense of the beer brand)

I’m always curious why native speaker just knows without having to memorising everything like this, especially if you think about a language such as German where there are Die, Der and Das. It is fascinating to me as a Chinese where we native speakers literally have to memorise the pronunciation of every character as the writing doesn’t reflect the pronunciation at all.

@@z00bs. Helaas zijn er dus echt wel regels voor HET en DE. Ik heb nooit de logica ervan kunnen begrijpen, maar er zijn daadwerkelijk regels voor het gebruik ervan. Dit wordt op nederlandse middelbare scholen aangeleerd.

Olleke Bolleke Okay, then. Ik leer Nederlands, and my pronunciation sucks. Seriously, if I try to say a Dutch G I sound like a computer that glitched in the middle of talking. So “gezellig” would sound like “[STATIC]-zelli-[STATIC].” And that’s if I get lucky and don’t end up bleeding the throaty noise into the rest of the word. Then I just sound like Cthulhu. And neither of those are apparently how Dutch people pronounce the G. HELP: WANTED.

when your are german and start to learn dutch, you can simply learn the special rules (-isme, -tje, -pje, -etje, -je = het and -ing = de [there are more rules]) and for the rest you take the german artikle and if the german article is DER or DIE it has around 85% chance that the dutch article will be DE. So when learning words with articles only learn the articles if they differ from that rule. so you learn for example: dildo, raam, de auto, neus, weer, het lidwoord sadly that does not work so well the other way round, when you're dutch and want to learn german. also a hint for _everyone_ who learns dutch and wants to do the Taalexamen NT2-II: if you have no clue what the article for a specific word is: make the small form out of it. because then it is always HET (de) auto -> het autoTJE (de) wang -> het wangETJE (de) vis -> het visJE (de) boom -> het boomPJE (love this one tbh)

These were easy, there are some that even Dutch people do wrong. Like "de matras" and "de doolhof". Which sounds rather odd to us Dutch but they're both "de".

Im dutchie with another origin and i make mistakes too in this. Its also not always a thing with rules what u can learn. As i remember when i asked a teacher whats the rule for this!? He said; its the feeling what dutch people automatically have. So i will get shocks as well by this game. Its a struggle for the most foreign dutchies.

It is really very simple: take the diminutive and it is always 'het' For instance 'het lepeltje' instead of 'de lepel'.

Wished you had thrown in some words twice but than a different form of it. Like "kast" en "kastje". Would be a good way to see if they just go from what they remember or if they actually think about how it sounds. Since it would be "de kast" and "het kastje" so you have to think about the rules or listen to how it sounds to know which to use.

The fact is, there are no rules to ‘de’ or ‘het’. You just have to know. Like le or la in French and el or la in Spanish. German does have rules

The ‘De or Het’ situation is all about knowing how it sounds right in Dutch. But easy words that mean something small, like tafeltje or plantje are ALWAYS Het.

this is how they teach dutch kids in primary school about de of het. luckily i was never schooled in Holland so i always have traumatized grown up who always correct me if i use de/het wrongly.

I’m Dutch but I didn’t know much of these rules, they don’t teach that if you’re a native speaker. And this was too funny too watch them fail while you knew the answer... 😆
