Sad to learn of the passing of Heather Couper, the producer and narrator on this programme. RIP.

Today's documentary makers would be wise to watch series like this, no repetition, no hesitation and no deviation, no stupid fake peril. "If Brian doesn't keep his pencil sharp, everyone could die!"

Great to see how many people love this documentary. This and Freak Waves are my two favourites.

Saw this documentary about 1993 when I think it was 1st transmit in the UK. Was the 1st decent documentary on lightning I ever watched.

Thanks so much for this; one of the best things on TV in the 1990s. I had the VHS release of this and have lost it!

My favorite documentary. Thank you so much for putting this up. At the very end of the credits you can see The Learning Channel mentioned as a co-producer. How different that channel was when this was made! I cannot imagine it doing anything like this today, having produced such dreck as "Here Comes Honey Boo-Boo." How the mighty have fallen.

I only watched this on VHS yesterday (recorded many moons ago). This saves me having to upload it to KZfaq. Thanks for sharing :).

This program was the magic key for me! Until I saw this I had little knowledge about storms to a degree and being only sixteen when it aired in the UK. In 1996, Savage Skies took me on a newer understanding on tornadoes and how they form. What combined the two mentioned for my formula was when I received "Tornado Video Classics" for my eighteenth birthday!! I WAS HOOKED!! :D

I stay at a condo in the centre of Bangkok. Severe lightning is a daily occurance at about 6pm. Sometimes I can stand on my balcony and horizontal lightning comes past just a few metres from the building. You can hear it sizzle as it passes.

An old relic from the days when TLC stood for "The Learning Channel" rather than "This Load of Crap."

I also loved this documentary as a kid in the 90's. Good old TLC.

This is one of the programs that made me want to be a meteorologist early in my life. My brother had this recorded on video, and we used to watch it at least once a year or so.

I loved this documentary as a kid we had it on VHS along with one about volcanoes and I found them fascinating even if a lot of it went above my head. It really grabbed my attention and got me interested in science. Thank you for uploading this I've wanted to watch it again for years!

I've seen Ball Lightning twice in my life. About the size of basket ball, orange like a 12v globe running on 10.5 volts, floated along not effected by the wind. would go through wood and glass, and follow fence lines then vanish. no sounds at all. THough there are accounts written by the O'Riley's in Norther NSW Australia of such balls exploding. Ball lightning is real. and Terrifying, yet curiously inviting to watch.

Great old doc despite the Globe paradigm propaganda!

How would the balls of lightning perform if the action were created hanging from the ceiling as though they were falling from the sky?
