Electrified or Electrifried? Adding electric assist is an improvement…especially for my garage floor! In this episode we set out to tackle an electric steering conversion on a 1968 Mustang.

I did essentially the same thing except I used a Toyota Corolla motor. Instead of a bearing in the bottom of the shaft, I used a teflon disc the inside diameter of the column and bored a 3/4" hole in it for the shaft to go through. Works great as a bearing. I tried the manual rack and pinion setup, but it just didn't work for me, so I went back to the original steering box and linkage. It all works great even after several years.

Great job and information. In hindsight, could you comment on where you cut, drilled out and welded the upper steering shaft to your mustang shaft. Would you have done it different. I am about to do that now and wondered if it would be better to cut it up higher on the taper to allow more meat where the weld is. Seems thin going to the base of the taper and then drilling. Also wondered if pinning the steering shaft to the splined shaft with the machine bolt is still the approach you would take?

Thank you! Mock up was key for me. After finding the spot I wanted to place the assist motor I measured from there. I don’t believe I would have done it differently…the input shaft doesn’t receive the stresses that the output does (except if power off and you go in manual mode). It can handle manual steering and the housing base doesn’t receive near the torque that the splined shaft receives. Appreciate this and open to finding even better ways to do it. Plz do let us know if another approach works better.

How about return to center? Is there a power on delay before EPS kicks in? What was the squeaking when you were turning? was that the car or the column?

So this is out of a 2007-2011 Nissan Versa. I configured it to adapt to original stand. It's been a much better platform over the Prius/Vue version that I've used in the past.

Great question! It does work with a cable driven quadrant set up like I’m using on my 67. The pedal assembly is from Mustang Steve. Here is the video where that steering assist is installed: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ibt6jZmnvqm7YYk.html

What happened to the unisteer power rack? I've had one for 14 years now in my 67 and no leaks ever. I understand the electric change over idea and it works for some. But why did the rack leak on you? its just two lines.

For the firewall plate what bearing did you use to hold steering shaft? I saw in the video you made a plate but I didn’t see the bearing setup. Can you please show this or let me know your process. I have a 63 falcon which is very similar to a 64-65 mustang. I thought maybe I could use the end of the old column cut to 2-3 “ long with the roller bearing on end to carry the shaft. Winding if this would be strong enough or do I need to go a different route. Thanks!!

@@FollowTheBuilds Thanks!! I’m going to run a straight rod from end off box thru firewall to my manual rack witch I already have installed. This will tie end to my existing u-joint set up. When you cut the column it’s basically right after the alinement slot for factory mount? Thanks again for you help.

@@mastermatt289 that is correct. I would mock up the steering assist motor with out the column installed and make sure you are happy with that location. For 67-68 that has been the perfect placement. I would mock up and measure three times before any cuts. Happy to help if you should need anything!

Great video. I really like this conversion and it can also be done with the original box which came in these cars. Leaks? The original Bendix power assist ram system was almost designed to leak. One thing you can do to increase your steering effort a little is to dial in more caster. Modern radials like all the caster you can give them, more than you're ever likely to be able to get given the way the original suspension is set up.

Yes. I just complete this conversion on a 67 using a stock style steering box. This was an early 67 with the same straight shaft that 65-66 had. Check out the previous video as I describe this process. Thanks.

I already had a power rack and pinion installed so removal was fairly quick. I installed all of this in about 6 hours. If your engine is in and with a original steering box then it will likely require taking off the driver exhaust to allow room for removal (that can take a couple of hours depending what type of exhaust you have). Happy to answer any questions you have on your specific set up.
