There are a bunch of different electronic cowbells and percussion pads out there. In this video I run down a bunch of different options at different price points.
(I didn't mention the trigger bars from DDrum or Pintech, sorry about that)
Roland BT1:
$110 New
$65-$85 Used
The main advantage of this trigger bar is that it doesn't need mounting hardware and doesn't take up much space
NFuzd Audio Nspire Cowbell:
$130
The main advantage is that it's dual zone and looks great. You'll need an adapter though.
Jobeky Cowbell
30 Euros
I have doubts about the quality of this cowbell, good price though.
CowPaddy
$60
Solid low price alternative to the Nfuzd cowbell.
Used 6" Rubber pad on eBay:
$20-$40
Cheapest option.

I have the Cow Paddy, and have been playing it for two years. The build quality is outstanding and it feels good to play. The slap sound you get from the rubber is a little louder than I expected, but it is still not too bad. Overall I would highly recommend buying it. Only thing I don't like are the exposed bolt heads on the front. I covered it with a black sock for a while and it looked much better. Dampened the slap sound as well. Just my two cents. Great video as always Justin. See you next time.

Thanks for your suggestion to look for an old drum pad. I came across a triangular Roland pd31 from the eighties that looks like a missing part of the space shuttle. With 4 zones (1 head and 3 rims) it has everything I could wish for.

recently bought the TD-17kvx and the CY-13 ride's bell is hard to trigger and low in volume. so, I mounted an old PD-7 pad just over and to the side of the CY13's bell dome. assigned the "mainly bell ride" setting to the head and a cowbell to the rim. worked a charm.

What sold me on wanting the Roland BT-1 is that Jojo Mayer actually now uses three of them. This is man who had said for a while that electronic drum pads in set-form were just expensive practice pads and didn’t allow for creativity. He also never uses anything he doesn’t need to use for his music. So for him to have a couple, they have to be good.

Hey justin. Nice video. How easy would it be to mount ,say , a rubber pad ? I’d want to hang it off a cymbal stand if possible. Actually I’m more likely to use a little cy5 cymbal I’ve got laying around.

The NFUZD one uses the 1/8" cable because the NFUZD module only have 1/8" inputs for all the pads. Also, the TRRS cable is an option to not having two TRS cables, much like other dual zone pads.

I didn't know they existed. I find it easier(and cheaper) just to assign a cowbell or clap etc to the rim of one my toms and only use that particular kit when I need that instrument.

You can buy replacement guitar hero drum symbols for $20 which work fine with my Alesis crimson and take up only a small amount of space. You need to diy a metal or plastic sleeve (old bit of pipe does the trick) as the guitar hero mount hole is a little larger than a normal mount pole.

Just wondering if anyone has heard or maybe experienced, that the NSPIRE Cowbell Trigger Pad doesn't seem to work with the Roland TD 17KVX? Seems like the TD 17 Module isn't recognizing the Nspire Pad. When you pull the cable in and out of the module Aux jack, you can hear the cowbell working. Without it being played. Very odd....lol.

I use a Roland pd-7 2 zone pad. Then I have a cowbell and whatever I want to use on the rim. And pd-7 or pads like it still cheap. You can buy 5 of them used for the price of 1single zone BT-1. The original td10 used the pd7 for a hi hat.😅

Alternatively one could build one or more oneself. It is relatively easy and quite cheap. My only problem is the lack inputs on the drum module. Or one could go all in and buy the Yamaha DTX M12! ;-)

I think you have already made one right decision and that is to go with Roland. Which one ? well, the best one you can afford is the best one. Buy 2nd hand , these kits are pretty much indestructible and you will get more for your money. I'm sure Justin has made a video on best beginner kits, but you will only be a beginner for a short time.

There is another option which is called a trigger tube. It basically is a metal tube with a small rubber pad on top. Yamaha used to have something like it (even dual zone if I remember correctly). Currently there are two vendors I know of: drum-tec and ddrum www.drum-tec.de/drum-tec-trigger-tube-pro www.ddrum.com/query?upc=819998180584 I have the predecessor of the drum-tec tube (not the pro version). It does not have the mounting bracket and I use a rack clamp to mount it (the tube has the same diameter as the Roland drum rack tubes). This causes some cross-triggering because the pad is comparatively thin and a lot of vibrations are transferred to the rack. I guess the mounting bracket of the pro version improves this. Although the socket for the cable is facing down I never had problems of the cable falling off. But I am not a heavy hitter. The dynamic behaviour is not super great, but I did not spend too much time into tweaking the trigger settings of my TD12. As a cowbell it definitely does the job.

I mounted a plastic timbale block on my kit as most of the time I play without using the headphones. Then I converted my floor tom rim to be a cowbell. Btw - can you do a video on equipment required and how to add a pad to KV30? I understand I the easiest, cheapest way to go is to add a splitter cable and sacrifice a zone on one of the existing pads and convert the new pad to desired effect. Would greatly appreciate your thoughts.

In British Columbia BC. I like them I had a 30K. Bought the digital upgrade pack. I sold the 30 unit and PD 100 pads purchased 4x PD105X and a PD125x for floor I use a KD7 for kick due to it being small. VH 11 HH CY 12 and 13. It's moded KV I guess. Found out about the MIMC after. Ironically my local stores will only bring it in on special order, so one cannot try it out.
