I thought the same. And we didn’t even hear a single note. Haha. Perhaps it has always been that simple for electronic drums. They just didn’t look good. Away with cables and in with proper drum shells. And. Here we are problem solved.

DWe will probably be THE e-drum kit i always dreamed of. And finally they pulled the trigger to make their triggers work wirelessly. That alone is such a game-changer. No more fiddeling around with cables. Just setup like a real drumkit, start your laptop and your good to go. So promising

The wireless kit looks interesting but I wonder what the cost will be? Also, seems like it would be good for playing out but for me, I only setup at home so once my wires are locked in and organized, I'm fine. To me, a great setup out of all the pieces here would be a JObeky kit, Roland module, and a VST.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the acoustic sized e-kits more for the audience than the drummer? If I'm going to bring my e-kit to a gig, I appreciate the relative lightness of an e-kit.
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 10 ай бұрын
There are two trains of thought when it comes to electronic drums, really. Some people want them to be just like an acoustic kit but with volume control, more sounds available at one time with the same sizes and aesthetics (and that could be for their own preference or the audience's); others want to use them for their benefits, whether that's size/weight, the fact that they don't have to be anything like acoustic drums etc. So it really depends on who is playing them and what they want from them!

@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 10 ай бұрын
The EFNOTE kits feel like a very natural progression of the ATV ethos. Simple to use, natural sounds and a pretty plug and play experience when paired with their own pads. That's the modules, at least - I don't have any experience with ATV's full kits but I think it was a similar vibe.

The Ef drums sounded the best to me. Much better than expected. Is it better than the Pearl mimic pro?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 10 ай бұрын
Personally I think the Mimic pips it because it has a really large core library and you can now load your own multi-layered samples (or those taken from other software), so it's close to limitless in potential sounds. There's probably fewer sample layers on the EFNOTE sounds too so rolls on the snare sound a little less natural, but it still felt great to play. The Mimic also has many more onboard effects, such as 5 band EQ on all drums and mics, compression for different mics and a nice if simple reverb. The individual mic control is awesome for people who like to craft sounds. On the flipside, the Mimic's onboard sounds do have a very "Slate" character which some people aren't a fan of. The EFNOTE kits seem to be aiming for a more dry and natural sound character overall (though some of the modules have reverb) with plenty of tone and a "small room" vibe. They are probably closer to "plug and play" than the Mimic if you buy a full kit.

10:32 what kind of market though?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 10 ай бұрын
There are quite a lot of people who prefer the SPD-20's sounds over the newer 30 but wanted an updated feature set, so the Pro fills that niche. I believe that the original SPD-20 was very popular in the Indian market too and that Roland added a bigger focus on Indian percussion to the newer sounds that were added alongside the old ones. So I think those are the two main demographics (that may also overlap) that this pad is aimed at.

@@unclerhombus I totally agree. There is nothing special about the DW shells or hardware that makes it any better for triggering and processing in a module. But I have a hunch they are going to lock it all behind their mid-to-high-end shells and hardware packs. Either that or they're going to make you pay a yearly license fee for the software since it's basically just triggering directly into a proprietary VST.

all junk, Hit the drum with a stick. NOW just Rest a stick on the drum while hitting it with another stick. there is no difference in sound on e drum. Yet there is on real drum. . In the real world, people hands are not perfect alternating strikes so sometimes when you are hitting a drum on a real drum your stick upstroke and other stick downstroke can create that same overlap situation in high seed, especially when doing flames and double or triple stroke rolls. That situation of sticks movement overlap is variable in minuet detail. It is that stick overlap of impacts that causes a drum that is real, to have BREATH sound. That can never be reproduced with a E drum. Still don't believe me? go play a E drum with brushes. See if you can get it to sound like brushes...the brushes, are hundreds of tiny sticks all doing that same thing to the drum head I explained. Figured it out yet?
@TheeDrumWorkshop
@TheeDrumWorkshop 10 ай бұрын
Incredibly condescending and quite reductive! But if I was to believe you want a genuine discussion, I agree that chasing "true" acoustic replication with electronics will be nigh on impossible because there are characteristics that are hard (or not possible) to replicate without the physics of an acoustic drum. But I don't believe that means there's no merit to electronics (whether approached like the kits in this video or not), or that there aren't other improvements that could continue to close the gap between the two, if desired. I'm sure some of the things you've outlined could be achieved with the right trigger tracking, behaviour modelling and sample set. Whether that will happen is a different matter. You could apply this same negativity without perspective or context in reverse, tool - you can't just switch to an entirely different set of sounds with an acoustic kit at the push of a button, you can't easily change up the dynamic response of an acoustic instrument without also changing its sound and characteristics, you can't play acoustic drums practically silently without dramatically affecting its sounds or feel, etc. There are benefits and trade-offs with either option and to act like differences are only failures that result in "junk" isn't particularly useful.

@@TheeDrumWorkshop electronic drums are very bad for players. Very bad. They dilute the senses to real drums and to real hand movements. They all use normalization internal to the units that can not be adjusted or removed. This is part of the triggering system that uses something called hysteresis. I know more about them than most people alive. When Drum normalization takes place and it does on every hit, it involves the artful adjustment of audio levels to a standardized reference point, as well as adjusting the reference point in time with relation to other triggers. this is why hybrid drums are so difficult to sell because of the offset between the real and the artificial where the computer must adjust the reference time. This adjustment throws of the human senses. you get use to it, but it will destroy your natural meter. E drums are a disaster.
