This video demonstrates a simple setup for using altimeter deployment for rocket motors that do not have a delay/ejection element. Links to some of the supplies I used below:

Tysm!!! I am trying to get my level 1 certification and I can’t find another video thet shows you how to make a recovery system people just think it is a given fact that everyone knows.

Glad it was helpful. There are more traditional methods that work better as far as protecting the altimeter, but this works in a pinch. Just make sure you have plenty of wadding or something between the deployment charges and the altimeter. It might be a good idea to put the altimeter in a tube or wrap it in foam to protect it at a minimum.

The battery terminals (within the battery) are soldered to the cell leads. Don't recommend EVER soldering to the leads of a battery. You could easily de-solder the connection to the cells. Or damage the cells due to the heat transferred.

Those are definitely valid concerns, though the batteries I am using I know are welded internally, not soldered, and I don't think I'm introducing enough heat to damage the cells. Definitely a good idea to test and make sure things are working though, and if you have any concerns then use a battery connector instead.

cut the end switch leads off set so even if u step on the wire 1 lead is short cant make a circuit

I would recommend taping the twisted wire “switch” to the outside of the rocket in case for some reason your launch is scrubbed and it has to be taken off the pad. I’d go for a connector for the battery instead of solder. Would probably put the altimeter inside a tube or container, with vent holes or at least wrap in a piece of Kevlar or nomex for some protection. Are you using a sugar propellant? With the metal nozzle figured that might be the case. Nice looking motor case. Did you machine it or purchase it?

Definitely good points. Yes, I am using Sorbitol (KNSB) propellant. I did machine the case, there is a playlist on my channel documenting the build.

Yes definitely leave the twisted wire “switch” taped to the outside, it would be very difficult to disarm with the wires inside if for some reason you have to remove it from the pad.

thank you for your time on the Parachute deployment. How did you know the Attitude that the Rocket Reached?

For this altimeter you just count the beeps. You can hear in the video one beep, then four, then four again, then seven. A lot of altimeters work this way.

Dont follow anything this guy did in this video. Hes very uneducated in the proper and safe way to fly Dual deploy. You absolutely never solder directly to the battery. You ALWAYS secure your electronics with kelvar and or eyebolts, not string. You always encase your electronics because the gas and soot from the motors will destroy them. This guy is going to get himself or someone else seriously hurt

I have done everything that this video went over even machining the motor casing myself and everything worked just fine. Some people like myself can't afford to go and buy the top notch rocketry equipment that is out there to have what you call "safe" rocketry. I have seen some of the most expensive rockets turn disastrous. These rockets here are all self made and you get more satisfaction watching something that was 100% homemade from sourced materials that fly perfectly and come back without any damage. I'm sure he is even launching at sanctioned events that have proper codes he is following. Everything here is SAFE! My rocket venues allow for "experimental" rockets to be flown and have extra safety protocols in place if such an event occurred

Dude, you really need to learn proper techniques before you try to educate others. Pretty much everything you did in this video is not only just wrong, its very dangerous. Youre going to get someone seriously hurt. Theres safety codes and procedures for a reason. Its so all of us in the rocket community can continue to enjoy it and its people like you who put the hobby at risk.

"Dude", I've been flying rockets for 20+ years, I'm TRA L2, I have a Masters degree in Aerospace Engineering, and I'm a licensed Professional Engineer. I'm not saying any of that to brag at all, I have more to learn like everyone else, but I do know what I'm doing. No, everything I am doing here is not wrong or dangerous, and I have not violated any safety codes (if I have, then cite the codes and where they have been violated). If you are not comfortable with the techniques I am using, then don't use them, simple as that. I clearly state in the video that I am simply sharing the way I do it. I'd love to see a video where you show how you do it. Let's just all have fun flying rockets.

What did he do wrong? I’ve never done electronic eject because I’m not old enough to buy black powder but everything looked fine to me. All secured and protected and that jazz. I don’t think that this method would work for dual deploy though.

@charlieh3356, What did you see that did was so dangerous? I watched the entire video and there's a few things like always using stranded wire, that doesn't apply for model rockets with. There's a few things he does differently that benefit him to change some of those habits but everyone does this a different way and there's not a specific way it has to be done. Also the the battery leads, they make connectors like you get in a fire alarm you can get to put them in the sled and hook them up easier. Other than that he did a good job but is still learning and has some more to learn yet as we all do. I've been doing rocketry for 33 years, I didn't see anything dangerous that a NAR or TRA member would freak out about on the range. He has a degree and thats great. But to me a piece of paper is useless thats been proven elsewhere. He could word things differently or change some things build wise but its his preference to how he builds really. What rockets do you fly or what did you see specifically that he did wrong? I'm curious?
