Just fixed my first motherboard, thanks to this channel. Mosfet had blown due to voltage being injected into the Ethernet port. Switched it out with one from a parts board and even though 2 of the pads were damaged it still worked when I bridged the three pins together, they were connected originally anyway, and it seems to be working now.

Not too long ago my friend brought a Toshiba laptop to me to fix for him. He told me it has been repaired two years ago and when i took it apart i found a big piece of copper wire across one of the 19V mosfets. Turns out one of the mosfets shorted out and the previous guy who fixed the board put a wire across one of the mosfets that didn't short out so basically the protection circuit was completely omitted. All it took to fix the board was to replace the one shorted out mosfet with a working one and the laptop works fine now and for a cheap budget laptop it has a great keyboard.

I'm an electrical engineer, long retired. You are the best technician I ever met. I love fixing things myself too. That's why my refrigerator is 35 years old, my electric stove 35 years old, etc. I fixed the electrical power display on my stove so many times, using two broken displays to fix one. My Porsche 944 lasted 550,000 miles. Anyway, I wish you could show a video reading the pins off a USB power connector in my Dell 9365. Good luck. I'd send you my Dell, but you're in the UK, correct?

Those intermittent sometimes-it-works issues are painful. Occassionally they'll be from faulty discrete components, but most commonly it's going to be a simple physical layer problem--loose connection to a component or cable, cracked soldier line/soldiered pin loose in the socket, screw/frame metal shorting a circuit, slight break in an internal ribbon cable--and just by moving it, or holding it differently, flexing the frame in just the right way, you either make or break the intermittent connection.

Hi Sorin, I missed this one in Nov. A really good one for me as I just watched your motherboard videos, it's all making much more sense! One thing I am having a problem with still is the recognition of some of the other 6 or 8 legged chips as you go around finding the power supplies. What are they? (I can't be the only one surely), my excuse is I didn't start leaning this stuff until I was 74 yrs old. Since this job came in as a MB are you sure he is not one of your applying the power supply here or there students?

2:35 Frame I just started watching, there might be a short around the wiring in the screen panel, because when you layed it down it turned on. Your hands are around the display,and hinges. so was I right? Oh? We are not working on that one??? Ok next.

So my understanding is that the mosfet is fine but there is no voltage on the gate because of some other faulty component? Is this correct, and if so what voltage should you expect to see on the gate in a working laptop? Also, why not trace back from the gate to try to identify the faulty component, or is it just too time consuming and it doesn't matter so much? Thanks in advance for sharing your knowledge, it is really appreciated.

Very interesting. So - in summary. It looks like you kept the shorting wire in place instead of the mosfet - and still don’t know why there is no voltage on the gate and/or if the MOSFET is bad - or if the circuit feeding the MOSFET gate is bad !! So if that gate feed comes from the power management chip - aren't you worried that there may be some valid reason the power management chip isn't turning on the mosfet? Is there a possibility down the line that a possible real error might cause the motherboard or CPU or something to burn up??

I think some ``engineers`` are too tough with the comments. I prefer to short circuit a mosfet rather than throw away a new board or spend a day to find out why the mosfet does not get a signal in the gate. I think Mr. sorin does it because otherwise it would not be cost-effective to fix this.He just repair it so we do not throw it in the garbage because he cares and he likes this things.

@TheBaregel
@TheBaregel 5 жыл бұрын
the mosfet is fine,there is not input voltage to the gate from somewhere else that failed,he just bypass it,im not sure about the consequences of that move but i guess he knows his stuff
@jaimereyes4157
@jaimereyes4157 5 жыл бұрын
That comes from the way a MOSFET works, it is just like a water valve. The Gate controls the flow of water, on or off. If you bypass the gate (putting a jumper from input to output) you're just bypassing the gate. Also, the water in this case is a very very high current so you gotta be careful. Mosfets are essentially built, most of the time by 3 terminals.

Trying to diagnose an xbox that was not working then worked twice for about 5 mins a few months later that is now not working again haha. Board has signs of short or ground out. I wonder if Louis Rossman would ever do this?
@nackedballs
@nackedballs 5 жыл бұрын
Rosman has specialized himself in repairing Apple Macbooks and has a totally different approach in finding the faults... For who knows how to read the schematics and has the motherboard layouts to pinpoint exactly the position of each component, can "easily" follow up on the board and measure voltage and compare to the given ones on the schematics, when they don´t match, just simply replace the faulty component and so on... of course if the issue is power supply. Don´t get me wrong, Rosman has a load of knowledge on repairing Macbooks, he has practically all the necessary high-end tools to repair any Macbook out there on the market and certainly a good professional on this matter. Sorin "no schematics nur board layouts" is the "Brute Force" type of professional, he has gained a lot of experience throughout his carrier, with a genius touch/sense to find the issue and repair it, even if he has to remove a mosfet, diode, and solder a wire in its place... At the end of the day the notebook is working and we all are happy. Sure if Sorin had the component to be replaced in the store he would replace it... I think... LoL
@Umski
@Umski 5 жыл бұрын
@@nackedballs thanks, yes it was a 'tongue-in-cheek' comment really - as an amateur repairer myself there is a lot that can be taken away from both approaches - as you say Louis has superb knowledge (and spares) for a fairly small range of products, Sorin has a much wider remit of products he has in front of him and a wealth of experience plus the fundamental electronics in order to fix stuff from scratch - much respect to both of them :)
@theEskalaator
