Aim whether its the PCH or other SMD supporting components on the RTC power tack. Find Schematics and check all the components on RTC. If it's a PCH, it will be very hard to swap PCH and CPU preheat and hot air.

I'm almost convinced it's a faulty chipset, but I would replace the heatsink just to make sure it isn't a faulty heat pipe causing the problem. Although 630mW is a lot of power to consume for just an RTC running in the chipset. Would be interesting to compare with a working laptop of the same model.

I have Dell Inspiron 3542, I was fixing it on BadCaps Forum, then continued on Electronic repair school, it would power on, but no picture. Then I heat up cpu, gpu with drying fan, and squeezed around cpu/gpu (not the chip itself) and it works now, only thing is if I shut it down, it can be no image again, LED light is sometimes working, sometimes its not working. I noticed if i put it to colder ambient temperature, laptop would turn on with Image. And my solution was, to never put laptop to Shutdown, instead I customized to go to Sleep, instead, when I close the screen, or when I press power button. It has working battery and during sleep electricity stays in chips that are semi-faulty, and it turns on with image 100/100 everytime. Its not fully fixed.... But it can be used. I tried to stress test CPU for around 7 minutes, it was working perfectly, no freezing, nothing. Its running fast, temperatures are cold around 55-60 celsius, which is absolutely fine. So basically its a lottery what will die, in your case, it was freezing and completely unusable laptop. For more details what was worked on and tested I'll put the link below, if someone is interested to read deeper, or if we didn't diagnose issue fully, and you know something I'm open to suggestions! :) badcaps.net/forum/showthread.php?t=117390&page=2

i cant' understand how 0.63 Watt can give that heat to the PCH. In my case, if this is was on my hands, i would try to reflow the chipset with alot of flux around it and see if that would help. Sorin, give it a try please and let us know.

i think the heat from cpu infect the chipset that mean the fan should be work in high speed all time and because the fan is far from the cpu means the cpu heat reach the chipset quickly. it good idea that intel design cpu and chipset in same socket to make communication faster but they chould improve the chipset heat managment and quality.

Why do you use thermal pads with no heat sink when trying to cool off hot ICs? In any application I've seen, thermal pads do not dissipate heat. They move heat from a device to a dissipative radiator. Making a heatsink out of thermal pad material would be silly because they're really quite crappy in terms of actual thermal conductivity.

Do you think one of the minor capacitors on the cpu wafer may be short and linking sections between PCH and CPU? Long shot but worth checking.
@drezafterserah7144
@drezafterserah7144 Жыл бұрын
probably not, cpu chipset have high quality capacitors. the possibility of these capacitors can get shorted. but that is very rare. if that's the capacitor fault, especially since this is an Intel chipset cpu, the capacitors are below and adjacent to the cpu bga. so fixing it is quite a waste of time, because you need to remove the cpu from the motherboard. this requires bga rework. better to replace the motherboard or buy a new device
@darranhatten7460
@darranhatten7460 Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the input and I agree very unlikely but I also see a correlation that when the cpu is powered the chipset lowers consumption. I know this is likely an internal short but when you think about it there is possibly little link between the wafers other than the external components?
@drezafterserah7144
@drezafterserah7144 Жыл бұрын
cpu and chipset wafers are link to the motherboard and have supporting components, and these components are inactive when the motherboard is off. one of the power that stays on the motherboard is 3.3v which is always on. This power is used by the EC chip for power button detection and other sensors. the chipset uses this power as RTC and this must always be present. this 3.3v power is not used to power that chipset. The chipset has its own power supply to operate and it will turn on when the EC chip detects the power button being pressed. if seen from this scenario a short occurs in the 3.3v area and it is possible that other components outside the wafer chipset have a short, although it is small possibility. Other scenario if the chipset get too hot after pressing power button you can check manually the supporting component around chipset. but this has very little chance of fixing it, moreover this is a chipset that is quite prone to damage
@darranhatten7460
@darranhatten7460 Жыл бұрын
@@drezafterserah7144 I totally get that, the point I was getting at is that the rtc is draining extra voltage and this disappears when cpu starts.
