I'd like to give another alternative rest position, which is pretty standard when you get into higher grades (or even professional contexts). Chest/stomach. I.e., holding the instrument straight up and down, but dropping it down against your chest. Like your "chin rest" (which I also hate), but lower. It's useful for anyone who ends up playing clarinet, sax, oboe, or similar woodwinds (not necessarily brasswinds) in middle or high school. And even brasswinds, while not the same, have a somewhat similar rest position.
