The greatest dramatic mezzo soprano of all time! What a gift she had. I was fortunate enough to hear her in person and she was just mind-blowing! It was all there in her voice, the top, middle and the bottom. It doesn't get any better than Obraztsova!

Listen to that full robust squillo. Chest voice is amazing. Every note is engaging and exciting; I'm never bored or tired of the voice. This is what modern opera should sound like TIO would be proud.

The sad thing is that nobody nowadays can do what she did. That passion is remarkable, breath control and as you mentioned, the chest voice. No singing in the mask which is killing everything.

One of the most exciting voices, if not the most beautiful. Heavy, and über-dramatic - sometimes her chest voice reminds me of Maria Callas in its ferocity.

I need two notes, then I hear the unconditional passion with which Obraztsova sings. The control she has over her vocal range, the uninhibited use of her chest voice, all of this is unique and serves only one thing: the music. This is pure passion, it doesn´t get any better.

I can see that I posted something here 11 and 9 years ago, little did I know then that you would end your days in my city of Leipzig, just 1,5 kilometers away from my home, and I had no idea you were here, this hurts me deeply, to this day you were so close, and at the same time so far...Nobody has ever moved me as much and with such intensity as Elena Obraztsova, in this aria in particular, evyry time I hear sing it she brings tears to me eyes, what an amaizing artist and person she was.

@@correasilvio2010 Sorry,you can think anything but it's pointless if it's not true... She has an enormous range which can fool someone into thinking she is a soprano and because her high notes are clear and strong but no,she is a dramatic mezzo,and proud one! She said so in an interview as well I'm sure you can find it on youtube somewhere,I watched it a couple of months ago :)

Wow! Everything with Obraztsova was rich and generous: so much voice, thrill and dramatic intensity! She may not have been the subtlest artist, but she had an amazing inner fire and a wonderful commitment to everything she interpreted, and the voice was a powerful and stunning force of nature. She'll be missed. RIP.

Homoclassicus Very well put! My main problem is how she distorts the vowels quite a bit in her Russian way particularly in her cavernous bottom register - - and she really cannot convey tenderness or introspection - - she has no mezza voce or pianissimo. But you're quite right about fire and commitment. The most exciting opera characterization I ever saw was one of her first Met Amnerises. She was a tigress during the judgment scene.

She sort of scales down the size of her voice if you’re looking to hear her sing mezzo-forte… there’s a really great concert of her from 1972 (here’s the link if you care to listen: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qdFyjcxiu5-yj6c.html)! :D
