Rybakina has such a similar playing style to Karolina Pliskova. In my opinion, she’s better than Pliskova but really needs to work on her footwork/court coverage. Pegula really exploited that weakness today and it helped her secure the win.

Pegula is an inspiration who has improved tremendously in the past 6 months. Like a different player now. She came into this tournament ranked no. 4. She is a billionaire heiress but she works harder than most of the top and mediocre players. There was one tournament where she was in singles, doubles and mixed doubles. When you aren't motivated by money, thats when you will fly. She has become such a superb player. ❤

Am I the only one who thinks that Rybakina is underachieving for the last several months? She can play much better than this and in fact should be contending for the #1 ranking. Pegula has no business beating her if she's playing her best IMHO.

I have nothing against Elena - both are great players. Still glad to see Jessica win this match - she plays in an intelligent way and this was well deserved.

Rybakina has been so listless since Rome. She just isn’t moving that well. She’ll lose to Sabalenka as well and won’t advance. Very disappointing!

Rybakina's footwork is her weakness. It's gonna be hard for her to win more slams with that kinda movement. I hope they'll work on that and perhaps see improvement in the future.

Pegula is good at wearing her opponent down so this result is not that surprise (I actually voted for Pegula before the match starts). Rybakina's defense is her aggression. She always attacks first and makes her opponents run, it not only shortens long rallies but also saves her energy. Once her opponent adjusts her rhythm and make her run, she will find herself in big trouble.

Amaizng match for these ladies and i love the altitude on these tennis courts in Mexico but i wish the WTA will promote tyese WTA finals better because a damn near empty stadium in WTA finals with such great players is not is sis

What a great tennis from Jessica! Typically for her, she showed very clear tennis, with few unforced errors, but also with not few winners. Her service game also was very stable. With that tennis she could be nightmarish opponent to Sabalenka and Sakkari too and to qualify for the semifinals and why not even to think about the title? But by other side Rybakina played horribly. Maybe her worst match of the year. Too many unforced errors, too many serve games lost. Even her mentality wasn't good (she served for the set in 5:4 and lost it with 5:7). But by other side i wouldn't judge her. That's her first WTA Finals match ever (she should've qualified in the last year too, but that's different topic). As we saw in the recent years the WTA Finals players flopped in their debut WTA Finals (for example Swiatek in 2021, Sabalenka in 2021, Gauff in 2022 and Pegula in 2022), but we see where are they now. The real disappointment would've been if Elena couldn't defend well her Australian Open and Sunshine Double points in the next year.

Very few can beat Pegula on hard courts, stats prove it too. Yet people are always surprised when she beats top players lol

If Elena doesn’t start to work on her court coverage soon she won’t be winning much! She needs strength training as well. Seems too fragile for quick turns and bursts! She just needs a new coach if he hasn’t already seen where she needs to improve! She needs meat in her thighs to build bulkier legs! A little more athletic and there’ll be few who can stop her! Just a missile for a serve isn’t going to cut it. She needs to work on her strength agility and athleticism! So much to love about her! Wish her the best! 🍺🍺🍺

Rybakina fell apart. One of her worst matches this year.

Rybka would have been better off playing in the men's game (figuratively speaking). Most of the ladies would tap out in the 3rd set with such power. While she lost, she barely broke a sweat. She just needs to add shorter balls to her game instead of hammering away at the baseline and keeping these baseliners in the point.

Elena can be erratic once she is under pressure.

What happened to Elena? It's not the first time this season when she was just about to take control of the match and all of sudden lost it all. 5-3 up in the first with the serve going okay, the next thing you know Jessica wins the first set 7-5 and goes up 2-0 in the 2nd. Was she just too tired or having a lack of concentration? It was a very long and tiring season and I hope she gets herself a nice rest before January 2024. Congratulations to Jessica for a very good effort.

Wait for a basher hitting fewer unforced or less unforced than the opponent only if the opponent is a basher either otherwise no chance but today Pegula's job on pressure points was just put the ball in play so that's kinda unforced you can't make 90% of time in the 2nd set I think Rybakina made those 100% of time btw.

Rybakina is the queen of unforced errors and her lethargic foot work and negative style is very provocative. Can't understand either why she gives up points so easily. It will never happen but I would love to see her get rid of her useless coach. She has very much to prove next year because the second half of this season has been so extremely dissapointing..

I love Lena very much, I root for her, but there is so much calmness, predictability, regularity, humility in her now… That's how it will be, that's how it will be. I won't win, well, that's fine. There is absolutely no winning attitude, attacking activity, thoughtful dynamics, athletic intensity and rigidity, character and ambition.. With such a set of today's qualities, only accept, fend off aggressive attacks and lose.. Someone has to give her a good shake and bring her to her senses. Jessica played like a well-tuned machine. She swept through all the exposed weaknesses of her opponent and left without breaking a sweat. If you don't score, they score for you.

Maybe is time for ER to find another coach who can gave her a more rounded approach and movement and improve on her ground strokes. She is the only player I like most honestly was disappointed when she lost 4 straight games in the first set. ❤

Today Elena was lookind distracted, sad, like she is not interested.

Ever since that Wimbledon run in 2022 and her emotional reaction in the post-match press-conference I love Rybakina. I like her calm and humble demeanor and aggressive playing style. But I have to say that this performance was really painful to watch. Of course with her tall frame one cannot expect the same kind of movement and agility like Coco or Iga display. But many times she doesn't even try to reach balls that are reachable. The attitude isn't right. It looked borderline lazy, at least lethargic. I hope she uses the off-season to work on her footwork and fitness. She also needs to work on her shot selection. She has to hit bigger targets instead of aiming for the lines all the time. I also think they should really take a look at her tournament calender next year. It's obvious that her body is much more prone to injuries and fatigue compared to other players. I have heard her attributing that to the fact that she started practicing full-time outside of a group setting at a much older age (16 or 17) than all the other pros. So she had much less tennis and athletic training in her life than all the other players and still needs to catch-up. But in addition to that different people are just built differently. With her slim frame, her allergies and her introverteness she seems much more frail than most other players. I think she should take this into account and play less tournaments. I also think that she should think about switching coaches. I know she likes the energy Vukov brings, but I think an older, more experienced and "fatherly" coach would be a better fit at this point of her career. Life on tour is stressfull for any player as it is , let alone for a more introverted person. But from the outside one gets the impression that Vukov's energy makes it even more stressful for her.
