When the humans disappeared, nothing major changed. Not for the elves, anyway. They lost a powerful ally, but also a formidable adversary.
No one looked too carefully into the human’s disappearance. Sure, there were a few different individuals who were emotionally attached to humans who mourned them, but the rest of the population went on with their lives.
No one except the Elven Army, called Smokewalkers, even investigated.
No one cared, but no one forgot. Museums opened for human artifacts. Tours started for old human cities. And Human Studies became a class in Elven colleges.
You were the child of Human Studies professor. You grew up staring in awe at human art, walking with delight through human homes, and most especially, listening with wonder to human music.
You loved human music. As you grew, that love grew along with you.
When the time came to pick a major on college, the choice was easy.
You were in the library when you got the news. You stared blankly at the messenger before bursting into exclamations of joy.
A human! Alive and well! It was a miracle.
You waited, as patiently as you could, for the day when you could see them. Finally, it came.
All you wanted was to meet them, to speak to them, and maybe to ask them about music. But you would meet the human a lot sooner than you expected…
