Makes the hairs stand up on the back of one's neck. Sir Neville had a great affection for, and affinity with this music. It was an honour to be a part of this iconic musical event.

I'm sorry for your loss; a beautiful dedication. My dad died in January 2001 and I still miss him. Music like this reminds me of him, too, as he was a proud Brit even though he emigrated to Canada many years ago. May the music and memories sustain you in your time of sorrow.

Every time I hear this music, what impresses me about Elgar's writing is this. He could have ended the piece with a great crescendo, a big blasting finale. Instead, after the emotional climax, it softens to a beautiful, quiet finish. Genius move, so satisfying. Superb performance.

Sweet heaven such magnificence! The sense of climax when the timpani roll and the brass roar, and the prompt quieting as the planet flies into darkness. Surely this is what Elgar hoped.

I think this is a brilliant rendition. I listened to Bernstein's version just before this and it was over-egged. This just lets the music speak for itself, with a hint of quiet restraint, making it even more dramatic.

Sir Neville Marriner was the most friendly conductor, whom I ever met. He was a real gentleman. Conducting Nimrod it sounds more natural than usual. Others abuse this pathetic and melancholic piece for a kind of soul striptease. Not Sir Neville. Someone like him will never come again. I miss him.

How can you abuse something as sublime as this . ? Those people are afraid of themselves and the emotions such music evokes. They are not complete . I pity them.

Remember Arthur Daley and Ray Daley at the funeral in Pinner, and Ray saying to the bereaved gangster's wife that "Elgar was the boss" or words to that effect? I think the episode was called 'Guess Who's Coming To Pinner?' Drink it all in Ray, you'll not see the like of this again. Drink it all in.

Saludos
