Absolutely fascinating talk. I always listen to D O Norris when he is on BBC discussing performances on record. Please can we have more of this brilliant, informative and entertaining man.

The presentation, the mix of skills, the charm, the humour. David is also a marvellous accompanist and the best-qualified musician in the UK. His musicianship in playing entire scores by ear and nicely too - he's not aiming at great nuance here, it's not a recital, but a lecture recital - I guess the guy below has never heard of those - and I think it extremely fine. The naturel with which all these skills fuse together is completely unique. It's the joviality and humility I like: and much as I love Gould, he was a bit hautain. Bernstein could never stop smoking and was too much of a lovey and expected those around him to indulge him.

Wow - this made me think. Perhaps Elgar himself was the larger theme (E to E) and was, in fact, the enigma!!!????

The word "ass" furnishes the initials for "A Safe Stronghold."

Elgar used the word 'ass' to characterize the imagined attempts by his friends to compose their own versions of his 'Enigma' Theme. This is a clever wordplay as one of the initials for the covert Theme is A.S.S. for 'A Safe Stronghold.' That famous hymn by Martin Luther is more popularly known by the title 'A Mighty Fortress.' The original and common three-word German title is 'Ein feste Burg.' Notice that the first three letters of the German word 'Enigma' are an anagram of 'Ein.'

Exquisitely played, Sir! Am particularly fascinated by the fact that the original recordings of The Enigma Variations, and particularly Nimrod, were a good deal FASTER than would be acceptable to a modern audience today. For a piece written over 100 years ago, wouldn't you expect the opposite to be the case?

Please visit my website for info about my Pathetique-theory: www.hanswestgeest.nl “Another possible clue is, for example, the tempo Elgar initially had in mind for Nimrod (and the opening theme). Nowadays the variation is played very slowly. Elgar himself already did that in his recording of 1926 with the Royal Albert Hall Orchestra: the tempo there is = ca. 40. However, what is remarkable is that, according to the autograph of 1899, the composer originally had a considerably faster tempo in mind: ‘Moderato = 66’ (and for the opening theme: ‘Andante = 63’). Is it a coincidence that, when it is played in this original tempo, two crotchets of the ‘Elgar theme’ are perfectly in time with one minim of Beethoven’s theme in music example 1 when the latter is played Adagio cantabile, as prescribed by Beethoven?”

If you look carefully at the comments below you'll be able to judge - well a fair person wuold be able to judge - the esteem in which David is held in the UK, and the degree to which his considerable subtlety is appreciated by the cognocenti.
