Before Elgin Baylor there was no one that played over the rim, he was an innovator the inventor of the way the game is played today!. Bill Russell was an innovator as well, before him no one blocked shots and grabbed rebounds. Julius Irving stated that he emulated the moves of Elgin as a child. Just like many players today emulated Dr J. Rules were changed because of these men, just as the rules were change to limit the skills of Wilt Chamberlain! These were great men with great spirit and athletics skills, if they played in today game they would do just as well. I am 70 years old and I've seen all the great players and there were many great players back then, fewer teams means you learn the way other players perform and you develop strategies and their was more talent per team. These men took their lives in jeopardy when they drove to the basket, they were bumped, held, elbowed, jerseys pulled and tugged, Wilt was almost always doubled and triple teamed! In today's game a player can not even look mean at another player the lane has been opened up so players can have easy access, offensive rebounds is a dying art! So, to all you young "twerps" out there, you know nothing so be quiet and appreciate what is happening, today's players are standing on the shoulders of the players that came before, so honor them, they more than deserve your respect!

Elgin was never under rated, he's just not know and even forgotten of how great this man was in his era and career.. In true reality Elgin Baylor was the first "NBA Highlight Flim" and actually paved the way for the evolution of high flyers that began with his "Hang Time" abilities that followed with Connie Hawkins then Dr. J to Dominique and MJ to Vince and Kobe to LeBron and now Zion.. There's many others known and unknown that can attribute their game to Elgin#22

I am a lifelong Celtic fan, but after Elgin's heyday. Reading his autobiography now. Very interesting. If not for Russell, with whom he was close friends, he would have won several rings. So decided to check out some highlights. He basically invented the jump shot. Up until him, everyone had a set shot. Interesting childhood and teen years.

He and Jerry West are the most underrated legends that i've ever seen. They was the best two perimeter scorer in the 60's in a single team, lead the Lakers to 6 or 7 finals, they didnt get a ring because the Celtics was a solid team, not a team full of legends like the people say to disrespect Russell's legacy. Maybe West just win one ring and Baylor not, but they was too dominant as other legends else.

I will even say they are the greatest offensive, perhaps even all around duo ever. Some (Shaq/Kobe, Magic/Kareem, Stockton/Malone, Dr J/Moses are a mid or small with a big. Stephen Oti thats not my point if anything bill faces even tougher competiton obviously there is the lakers but there is hal greer, arguably one of the greatest handles, paul arizin, the og jumpshot, nate archibald greatest undersized pg, the list goes on and on my point was people disrespect bill and take him out of the goat conversation because of his 11 rings. As a matter of fact yes the celtics had kc green, cousy, etc. But before bill got there they had never made the FINALS but as soon as bill got they became the dynasty we know today. Yes maybe his offensive skills werent the greatest, but his defense was timeless. His length, size, was too much for opponents. And people say he wasnt atheltic but thats FAR from the truth. Apparently he had a 48 INCH VERTICAL and you could find clips on youtube of him running the fastbreak with crazy speed as if he were a guard

@monafahmed5783
@monafahmed5783 6 жыл бұрын
Stephen Oti first of all, with the hal greer thing, i said ARGUABLY and bill to this day would dominate the nba and regardless of what era he played he would still have the greatest defensive mind because of his length and athleticism and as a matter of a fact yes lebron is great and you argue he plays against tougher competiton thats true in the finals against teams lile the spurs and warriors yet he STILL ends up losing to a mavericks team that had only DIRK and dont tell me kidd cuz he was way past his prime. And jordans competition in the finals wasnt as tough as bill rusells comp. in the finals. Ex. The trail blazers who had who? Clyde and thats it. They also played a busted up and injured lakers team. And jordan and lebron were getting kicked out of the playoffs the first years they came into the league. Jordan could never get past the pistons and lebron couldnt get past the MAGIC who had just one star in DWIGHT. And besides the lakers had the far better team with west, baylor, larusso{not a hall of famer but averaged 20 and 10} and then ARGUABLY the most dominant player in wilt so he should EASILY able to dominate Bill becuase he was much stronger and had 4 or 5 inches of height on bill and yet with that team they STILL go 0-8 in the finals with one of the main reasons being bill locking wilt down even though they had the better team. The celtics had cousy(pass first pg),kc green(not a great offensive player) havlicek(a bench player) and then bill at center(also not one of the greatest offensive minds)

He really set the foundation for wing players to come. Elgin Baylor -> Julius Erving -> Michael Jordan -> Kobe Bryant -> LeBron James So stop comparing eras and just appreciate the pioneers of the sport, because if it wasn't for them, basketball wouldn't be a global sport. Let us just appreciate the way they revolutionized the game of Basketball. Those crazy flashy blocks and chase down blocks? Thank Bill Russell for pioneering that. The jaw dropping post fadeaways, finger rolls and overpowering post moves? Thank Wilt for pioneering that.

Keep in mind, most of the players in the 60s have jobs if they are not playing. Elgin Baylor was also an army reserve during his playing career.

I wish people would appreciate the older legends of the past. It’s the fact that I didn’t get to watch them, that intrigues me more about them. I know that older players don’t seem to garner many views but I do hope that perspective can change sometime.

A perspective that is seldom examined is ; how many of the "today's era" players could actually compete in the '60's and the early years (the first three years of the combined NBA and ABA Leagues) of the so-called beginning of "THE MODERN NBA ERA"- very, very few I dare say. It can be successfully argued that the players that comprise and personify the term;" THE MAN,THE MYTH, and THE LEGEND" would make "short work" of those who display what is mistakenly viewed as SKILLFUL OFFENSIVE AND DEFENSIVE ARTS of "THE GAME !"Elgin Baylor's scoring 63 points in BOSTON GARDENS, Pete Maravich's 68 points against the KNICKS( of the championship caliber club years) in "THE GARDEN"(Madison Square that is) are a testament to the storied accomplishments of "THE BEST " of what was seen as a game played by and amongst MEN !
