I grew up in Russia. So, wherever I go, I will always miss particular things from my homeland. What do you think I miss the most?
Let's also reflect on stereotypes about Russia that I usually encounter abroad and things that you probably didn't know about Russia. (Hopefully one day we will have peace and you can visit!)

Eli, I am a 70-year-old American woman married to a Russian man. I have visited his home town (Valiki Luki) in Russia twice. and St. Petersburg twice. What is fascinating about Russia to me is the vast difference between the metropolitan areas and the smaller towns and villages. There are also big differences between the regions too. I have been aware of that, but your video made it even clearer to me. I also really enjoyed your description of :coconut" and "peach" cultures and personalities. It is such a wonderful way of describing these basic differences without any judgment! The world is such a huge place and exploring different cultures can be very disorienting! I had huge culture shock the first time I visited Russia. It can be scary if you're not used to it. These are really hard times! right now Thank you for your warmth and your openness! You have kept your perspective despite all of this -- you must be a very strong person! You should know that it is deeply appreciated by this old broad!

Culture shock? Yes, the turmoil of the 1960's in "the Western World", and all the disrespect towards elders and the encouragement of racial division, was promoted there. Eli, probably one of your best videos. I'm Australian, with Anglo-Irish, Welsh, Jewish, Romani and Aboriginal ancestry. My daughters are mostly Russian/Siberian Tatar. My youngest granddaughter has a BFF who is Nigerian/Tatar. Almost no-one in Russia cares! Westerners don't understand the tolerance of Russians, to those who are Россияне. Men in town accept me as a Мояк, and have no problems with me wearing the appropriate телняшка. In over 25 years, I have found Russia to be an amazingly tolerant society.

When I travelled around South-East Asia back in my college years, I met a sociology professor from Germany, we spent several hrs talking before he asked me where I was from and oh he was surprised to learn I was Russian:) the reason your experience was so bad is that Russin tourists are divided into two groups - those who drink and get very loud and those who are quietly enjoying their vacation you almost never even notice them. Of course the first group is causing issues so you form your label „Rissians“ based on them. And that is very unfair for the rest of us.

Much the same situation applies in Africa people do not seem to grasp just how diverse both the people and climate are across Africa amd of course the different Cultures and many would be amazed that in particular in many Western African Nations different religions such as Islam and Christians, The Asanti or Dogon to name just a few often respect and join in with one anothers festivities and generally live peacefully with one another. That is not to say there are no bad eggs they occur in every ethnicity and culture but generally the majority are good people helpful and caring but like Russia there are stereotypes that get put out there mainly from those who have never experienced reality in such diverse areas across the world. We have a wonderful planet and many amazing people and such widespread and differing beauty across this planet and sadly it can be ruined by Politics and greed and in many cases they are one and the same, Have a wonderful life and peace be upon you.

For Americans: To understand the ethnic situation in Russia, I think it might bear comparison to the USA if you imagined that Native Americans were a much larger part of our population, and that their languages and cultures had not been decimated. Imagine Arizona having a population that was 50% Navajo, and that you could hear Navajo being spoken every day on the streets of every town in Arizona. Then imagine every other state having some other one particular tribe as the most significant minority in that state, with the same linguistic and cultural situation.

I'm Canadian Metis. Both the USA and Canadian governments tried very hard to erase the indigenous groups. While stealing, pillaging and raping the land. Sounds like Russians incorporated all the different groups into one Federation. Giving each ethic region semi autonomous control over there area. This Russian approach is exactly what Russia proposed to Ukraine with the two LPR and DPR. Both regions would remain Ukrainian but be semi autonomous. But the USA government doesn't understand working together. The USA government only understands total control and wiping out of people groups. I actually find the USA government to be the most evil and corrupt government in the entire world second only to China.

True story. Hence, why Arnold Schwarzenegger has been seen as a rare exemption, and more or less as a cult hero in Russia, due to his appearance in *Red Heat* (1988), in which a Russian was depicted as a good guy for once. That aside, the demonization of Russia does stem from the US Government in part cause they are an easy scapegoat to justify the annual $700 Billion Defense Budget and else to further the cause of a small fringe minority in power.

I do not know what Queens is, but I think the main difference is that all the peoples of Russia live in the territories where they have lived for hundreds of years. Sometimes they fought with each other, sometimes they were allies, but they always stayed where they lived. And another feature of Russia is that we have a fairly large percentage of mixed marriages between people of different nations, so very often we differ culturally, but not physically. And finally, the cultures of the peoples of Russia are not closed within national communities - food, clothing, architecture, songs, traditions are used without any prejudice and barriers, which contributes to the mutual cultural enrichment of our people.

Greetings from Scotland! I think that if you travel extensively, you begin to realise that people tend to stereotype almost all countries. I completely understand what you are saying about Russia and Russians. Your huge country has an enormous diversity of different cultures and when people speak to me about "Russians" I try very hard to explain that to them just how big and how diverse it is there. I think I fail, but at least I try! 😊 People have the same stereotypical view about Scotland. No, we don't all wear kilts, no we don't all have red hair and we don't all love Whisky (it is NOT spelled WhiskEy here!) and we don't all eat Haggis! etc. etc..... 😂😂 I have to say that you have beautiful red hair, just like a Celtic girl, incidentally. My youngest Granddaughter looks a lot like you and her name is Eilidh (Gaelic, and pronounced as Aily). Finally, I agree, Russians are like Coconuts! Once you get past the hard exterior they are just like the rest of the world! Thank you for your time once again Eli! The dead have no blood circulation, a dead person's clothes are not clean because they have been lying on the ground for a long time... I guess you don't like to think. Do you think u$raine always tells the truth? These u$rainians are constantly threatening Hungary (before the war and now) I am sure that not all NORMAL Ukrainians are so evil, but unfortunately the u$rainian government teaches Ukrainian people to hate Hungarians. I ask everyone to think and stop hating Russia and Hungary. It is clear that this war is not ideal for ordinary people, but unfortunately the arms manufacturing companies are happy if this bloody struggle drags on for as long as possible. I absolutely understand that this is very painful right now, but don't forget that politics has always been nasty and unscrupulous.

Russia as a country and a state was founded a thousand years ago by three warring tribes who were tired of feuding because enmity harmed their lives and helped the Vikings to attack them and rob them. So they left their former settlements and founded a new common settlement, which they simply called the New City, in Russian "Novgorod". And later, when the country began to expand and the state became more powerful, the new peoples who joined Russia became citizens like all other peoples. Everyone had the same rights, the same law was for everyone, everyone became "Russian" without losing their national identity. That's how Russia became the largest country in the world, and that's how it lives now.

What your vlogs add to my knowledge is a personal perspective, one that takes you into the Russian household, of which of course there are many different types. My impressions of your homeland were first informed by reading Russian literature - from Gogol to Dostoevsky to Pushkin and countless others, but also contemporary authors like Brodsky and Ulitskaya. And of course music and art. My favorite painters are Kandinsky and Malevich. Besides the arts, Russia has excelled at a wide range of things, from engineering to sports. However critical I am of the Russian government, I don't view Russia from a narrow lens. Russia is much more than what transpires within the walls of the Kremlin. Russia is a vast and beautiful country. Its diversity in climate and cultures is remarkable. I hope to visit at some point.

@@aimee9478 Indeed, it's so important to keep an open mind. As an American, I am aware - and can understand - people's mixed feelings about my country. Yet, the best way for visitors to appreciate what America has to offer is to be open-minded. When I lived in Western Europe (Netherlands) in the 1980s, I traveled to Eastern Europe and cherished my experiences in what were then somewhat isolated countries. What intrigued me most was observing and trying to immerse myself - I stayed with host families - in local cultures. There were some language barriers. Though I speak English, French, and Dutch, and some German, I don't speak other languages. Nevertheless, the Slavic languages - which includes Russian - have always appealed to me, the sound and intonation, in particular.

@@joshuacohen9689 You've had some amazing experiences, Joshua! I speak English and German, currently learning French, and I'm very curious about Spanish. I've also seen many foreigners with various mother tongues getting proficient in Russian - it's a totally valid and achievable goal. Just don't pay much attention to people who will try to spook you with Russian being "oh so complicated" - it's true that it's not the easiest language, but it's definitely not the hardest one either, and it's absolutely possible with the right mindset. :)

I always imagined Russia as a land of endless winter, fut hats, and vast forests, I also imagined that every city was like Moscow or Saint Petersburg and was filled with museums. My image was a land of unending steel mills. I don't know where I got that idea. I think the most surprising thing was the variety of traditional clothing. I imagine these clothes are only for special occasions. They look much too fine for everyday use.

Which not that cool as you can see. Yeah, many different cultures in our country is cool, but problem is that a lot of nations are not represented in outside world. Also, our political regime is established throughout the country, and does not spare any culture. By and large, the national republics within the Russian Federation have no rights. National minorities don't have a voice here in Russia (it's very funny, as if someone in Russia has a voice)

Russia has conquered and surpressed all these cultures, those who are in favor of the regime survive, those who dont get crashed and assimilated. - The name Russia dates back to the Rus, nowadays known as Kyivan Rus. Yes, Ukrainians changed their name because of the Muscovites who stole the heritage - Borscht, the "nationa dish" and its origin is in Ukraine - Kyrillic is from Southeast Europe aka Balkan. - Russian language is also from the Balkan area (Macedonia/Bulgaria) - Nowadays Russia wages genocides against Ukrainians, Buryatians, Kubans, Dagestani, Georgians and Chechens.

@@mountainmoments You must get all of your news from CNN and the Kyiv Post. Chechnya is at peace. The people are happy to see that the U.S.-backed terrorists have been pushed out. Grozny has been rebuilt and is now a magnificent city. This is not genocide. In 2008, Russia came to the defense of South Ossetia, when Georgia's erratic president, Mikheil Saakashvili, goaded by Israel and the U.S., began to shell the city of Tskhinvali. Russian peacekeepers were among the dead. Russia could have easily destroyed and occupied Georgia, as the U.S. destroyed and occupied Iraq; instead, Russia used a brief military intervention to end the war. Again, this is not genocide. What is genocide is the nine years of shelling that people of the Donbass have endured. The shells and bombs and bullets came from Kiev, not from Russia.

Very interesting for me to learn that you are a Tartar Russian. They were a very suppressed people - especially in Stalin times. And still to some degree today - especially in Crimea which I understand became the traditional homeland in Czarist times. Most Tatars were deported from there and many refer to it as genocide. In more recent times many Tartars returned to Crimea when part of Ukraine - only to again face discrimination under Russians once Crimea was annexed. Do you have any comments on this. BTW, I think that you are a lovely girl. I have been to Russian many times - and lots of different cities and towns well away from Moscow and St Petersburg. But mainly in Moscow. I was in Russia for about three months in 2009.

I've been to Russia twice and on both occasions I was struck by the seemingly total disconnect between the general population and the ruling political class as personified by Putin and his military machine. People I met in Russia without exception seemed "normal", they lived their lives like most people do anywhere in the "West", whatever that is. Russians worry about jobs and money, go to supermarkets and have nice shops, certainly in the larger centres, and want their children to go to decent schools. Etc. Almost EVERYONE I met was reluctant or straightout refused to talk about politics. No-one I met seemed much of a Putin fan but shrugged their shoulders in an "it is what it is" manner. All this long before the Ukraine war, of course.

Dear Eli, I thoroughly enjoyed your video and found the information you provided to be very valuable. As an Azerbaijani Turkic living in the US, I appreciated your insights and share many of the same sentiments about people who lack an understanding of the complex ethnic and cultural diversity of Russia. 🌹❤❤❤ I have a humorous anecdote to share with you. Once, while at a bar with some coworkers for a post-work get-together and drinks, one of my colleagues (a young, white American with right-wing and Nazi sympathies) claimed that "Russia is the last true white country in the world." I happened to be taking a drink at that moment and almost choked, laughing out loud. I asked him what he based his foolish statement on, but he had no logical response. I then proceeded to educate him and some of the other Americans in our group about the various ethnic, linguistic, and religious diversities present in Russia. It's truly astonishing to witness the level of ignorance about such matters, even among educated Americans.
