Thank you for your advice. Here in Nevada my tomatoes seem to love the dry air. Incidentally, last year I planted a Native American corn seed that was 20 years old. Out of 65 starts only 11 came up. I did the same this year but used your seed starting mix. Out of 65 starts I had 26 come up! I’ve used your mix with all my seeds and have noticed a significant germination rate improvement!! My plants are healthier and thriving. I’m so pleased and have you to thank! Blessings to you and your family.

Instead of grinding eggshells and putting them in soil, I grind the shells and then soak them in vinegar to dissolve the calcium into calcium acetate which is plant available. Then I dilute a tablespoon or 2 into a gallon of water. Using this every couple weeks have helped keep BER away, plus it’s using a waste product. The leftover shells get added to my worm bin more for grit but also to pre compost the added shells.

@BigWillDogg82
@BigWillDogg82 Ай бұрын
@MsLookinup as for how to dilute and ratio of vinegar to crushed eggshell it’s roughly 10:1 @@bryannakvinda8411 is exactly right! As for how long to soak the eggshells in vinegar it depends on how finely crushed they are, but generally 3-4 days or until no more bubbles are causing the eggshells to rise. A word of warning, the finer you grind them, the more foam will be made initially which can cause a bit of mess so use an extra large container unless the shells are a bit coarse.

The Spring weather just went way out of the normal range here in North Alabama in 2024. I had 98, 99, 100, degree temperatures with high humidity by first week of June, and then continued elevated 90+ degree temperatures for the entire month. You aren't going to fix that no matter what you do. I've pulled a dozen Tomatoes or more from the plants already with blossom end rot. Small ones not as big as a golf ball still green that are coming down with it. Fortunately here we get a second growing season for Fall to try again. I've pulled enough suckers from my plants I'm rerooting in water to plant at end of July for The Fall. Conditions just don't favor good Tomato crop this Summer, the rains have dried up as well. So I'll pick them Green and make Green Tomato Relish with mine this Summer. You can even cut the end rot off them and use the rest in a relish as well. So it won't be a total loss but I will miss my garden fresh ripe Tomatoes which I normally would be starting to have already in any typical year.

I have read that egg shells can take years to break down in the soil to become available for plants to take up. Baking them dry and using a blender creates a huge surface area, which speeds decomposition. I use a little white vinegar to turn the crushed and cooked eggshells into calcium acetate, which is water soluble. My romas are getting some BER currently, and I think you let me know what is causing it. Temp and humidity race to see who gets to 100 first where I am at. I may cut back the growing ends and see if that cuts down on losses to BER.

That's a tuff one! My biggest problem with eggplants are flea beetles and aphids,for flea beetles the best solution is beneficial nematodes, you can also spray surround on the plants,surround is a natural ultra fine white clay that is water soluble, the negative with it is it makes the plant white which looks really ugly in my opinion 😂 trust this is helpful info for you,have a blessed evening!

I found Monday that one of my plants (I have to grow in containers) had blossom end rot. I believe I must have missed watering it one day. The soil was not moist and the roots, I could feel were growing well but were very close to the top of the soil. It had grown well and quickly. I thought it was still very moist because of all the rain we’d had in May here in the mid-Atlantic area. Also, because I was limited with funds and opportunity to get supplies, the plant needed more soil added to its 20 gallon container. I figured if it doesn’t have enough soil, it can’t hold sufficient water therefore, the water perhaps could not carry the nutrients to the tomato. Imagine how I feel, my first time growing this much talked about Black Krim tomato, which I have also never tasted, and it looks like I might blow it. Thank you, I will be watching your soil prep videos. I’m 69 years old and don’t know how long I have to grow veggies but, I will keep going as long as I can, this is my 5th year working at it.

I grow great Tomatoes in 5 gallon buckets. You don't need 20 or even 10 gallon container for great Tomatoes. A 5 or 7 gallon is plenty. Just make sure to use good potting soil. Top soil or soil out of the yard won't do. It has to be potting soil for reliable results. I don't know your growing season but if you're far enough south like I am you can still grow a Fall Tomato crop. My Fall Tomatoes in containers grow better then the Spring ones do.

This isn't a blossom end rot question, but a blight question. Can you give your opinion on using aspirin to help prevent blight? I see a lot of channels recommending either putting aspirin in the planting hole or mixing a slurry & spraying their plants. So far I am really hesitant to do this. I can usually beat early blight by giving enough space between the tomatoes, pruning to a single stem, mulching, trimming the bottom leaves, etc... however, our climate is so humid, I always get late blight. I have seen people using aspirin, spraying with baking soda & Neem oil or other sprays. I have tried Neem oil, however I still get late blight. Do you have any suggestions that you can share?

@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork
@GardeningHomesteadingWoodwork 19 күн бұрын
Yes the salicylic acid in aspirin is what helps prevent late blight but I would prefer not to treat it in that way,my approach would be to increase your biology in your soil so that the plant would have a strong immune system to resist any of the diseases that might try to take it down, with a healthy soil your brix would be higher as well which is an overall indicator of plant health, you can buy a refractometer which will give you the brix number, hope this helps and may God bless you!
