Materials testing, thermal imaging, for educational purposes. This video is intended to demonstrate over the counter available materials and their effect on thermal imaging devices. Often, soldiers, police officers, security officers, federal agents, private detectives, preparedness minded individuals, airsofters, milsim reenactors, and even hunters can make use of thermal imaging, but have never seen how simple and readily available material can impact the effectiveness of such devices.
This materials testing demonstration helps lawful operators of such technology identify signature reducing materials in play and see how their use can impact imager operation. This is great for milsim and airsoft as thermals are becoming increasingly popular in such legally organized sporting events. It’s also great for police officers to be able to see how such materials may image on their camera in they run into criminals attempting evasion. As a former police officer, fugitive recovery agent, tactical trainer for American forces, and counterterrorism security contractor myself, I would have loved to have had this knowledge and to have seen videos like this while I was active. So I provide this service now to help everyone stay safe and raise awareness.
These videos can provide for greater knowledge and safety of thermal operators since criminals, cartels, etc., are known to deploy thermal blocking and counter surveillance techniques, yet our own people are never shown how field expedient blocking materials may image. And on a commercial and sporting level, military simulation, paintball, airsoft, etc., can use these materials test videos to enhance their sporting and gaming experience.
Testing environment: 39 degrees, mid-morning, with infrequent snow flurries, coming off a 27 degree night. Meaning, ANY heat is picked up incredibly easy.
Handmade suit utilizing a mixture of natural and synthetic fibers to break up the pattern of heat absorption and reflection sewn to desert tri color (hot weather) BDU base trousers, blouse and boonie hat.
See video suggestion card at end of video for more detail on how I built the suit, close up of it and it’s layering, etc.
Thermal blocking was achieved using common radiant barrier lining under vest and in sleeves, and by use of firefighting proximity gear under pants. The addition of a tanker cold weather balaclava reduced head/face signature in conjunction with tactical goggles. The gloves used were mechanix tactical gloves and they did not reduce thermal signature of hands at all. In all, the only thermal signature remaining was from my hands and breath on balaclava fabric. Nomex flight gloves or military cold weather glove inserts worn over existing gloves should solve the remaining problem with the hands.
Escape and evasion, reducing thermal signature. Thermal scope used was pulsar helion xp50 with 640 sensor, endorsed by police officers associations.

Oh, I’m an idiot. Did you mean the Ghillie suit? I assumed you meant the thermal imagers. Sorry. I hand made mine, the one shown here. I can show detail on it so you can do it too. If I made it I would charge a couple hundred, basically a hundred in materials and a hundred in my time (basically that’s me charging ten bucks an hour). It’s tedious work and takes many hours. I guarantee you can make it yourself far cheaper and probably faster. I have an autistic son I’m primary caregiver for, while I’m also literally hand building my house (I got rafters up today, trying to dry in before winter), and running an off grid self sustaining homestead, while also shooting videos around all of that. You could probably use materials and BDUs you already have on hand, and save money that way, and gave more time to dedicate to it. My base for the ghillie is 3 color desert BDUs. I hand tied and made the netting I then hand sew onto the BDUs, then cut to length a large variety of materials of different compositions, mixing natural and artificial fibers, to avoid the “blob” look on thermal that ghillie suits made of one material (like 100% polyester) have, because the materials all heat and cool and reflect and absorb at the exact same rate, while nothing in nature does that. So I used jute, burlap, bamboo yarn, polyester yarn, and I raided the decorations area of Michael’s and Joanns grabbing their preserved straws and grasses and then I collected handfuls of grasses from nature, and tied them all together in random mix patterns, so there’s nothing uniform about it anywhere, with a bunch of different compositions in different layers, reflecting and absorbing and radiating at different rates across the surface. It really does a good job of breaking up the thermal profile. So my experience has been that off the shelf ghillies are not this effective against thermal. They are better than regular clothes though!

@@ThatThermalGuy thanks for your video and thanks for your comments and best of luck in everything you're doing can you tell me what are the different materials is a variety of materials that you're referring to? Thanks again
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
@@superjeffstanton I edited my reply above. Sorry, I wasn’t trying to be intentionally vague. The composition is roughly a third to a half jute twine and another third burlap with the remaining quarter to a third being a heavy mix of lots of different materials. Different lengths of jute were tied alternately to create a non uniform non repeating truly randomized pattern. Then in between and around the jute, I tied in cut burlap, undyed natural burlap and dyed/painted burlap so there would be different appearances as temperatures shifted. I cut the burlap into vine like shapes and leaves, and pulled threads off the edges of every cut I made to feather the outlines and prevent harsh lines anywhere. Then I took earth tone colored yarns (brown, tan, OD green and forest green and yes, even some black) in 100% natural cotton, 100% bamboo fibers, polyester and acrylic blends, and cut them into randomized lengths and tied them in and around and between the network created in the base layers already affixed in singles and in bunches as needed to “break up” clumps of uniformity. Then I took burlap and stripped long threads out into bundles and tied them off horizontally to puff out and interfere with tendency of materials to drop flat and run straight up and down (hold out a string, see how it drops straight down, now stick a bow tie under it, see how it messes up the strings laying pattern? That’s the idea). Next I took artificially preserved and colored grasses from the projects departments at Michael’s and Joanns and tied them in all over the place to create another thermal pattern shift. And finally, I went out into the field and hand picked live grasses and tied them in. The mixture of appearances, materials, and layers, is what makes the suit as effective as it is. And because of density of materials, you can’t really see the BDU they are affixed to, which also means heat radiates out into the spaces around the materials, and the heat disappates in a non uniform manner due to contact with various materials on its path, so it doesn’t get as hot as, say, stuffing a space blanket under your shirt, or housing radiant barrier under your blue jeans. It remains breathable, and even mostly comfortable, even when it’s hot out (I imagine it’s like how they wear layered robes in Saudi Arabia even though it’s a desert?). That’s it. It’s nothing super special or difficult. Simple, easily acquired materials, and patience. 👍🏻 Just by itself, with no additional thermal blocking layered underneath, it’s pretty darn effective. Here’s some video of JUST my ghillie suit with no blocking materials added in. Just native masking. I think it’s impressive. m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/op10odmHt83TpJs.html If I had it all to do over again, I would only make one change, and that would be to go larger BDU base. I started with BDUs that fit properly. That’s the only problem. Because the way I use it, I don’t use it as clothes. I use it as an oversuit. Which means clothes underneath it. But since I started out with properly fitting BDUs that means the suit is tight wearing normal clothes underneath, which also artificially shortens the legs and arms because of clothing bunching underneath. It’s not dramatic, it’s about a half inch to inch shorter than I like, but the layered materials drape a full 6” to 8”past cuffs so you can’t tell. It’s just a comfort thing. So if you are going to do this, I recommend you start with BDUs a full size too large for you. Maybe two full sizes so long as you’re not absolutely swimming in them while wearing a set already for normal clothes. Just walk into the surplus store and grab a set in a size bigger, and just pull them on over the clothes you are already wearing. If comfortable and free movement, go with those.

Literally yesterday I upgraded to the latest unit from Pulsar, the Helion 2 XP50. Sensitive to 40 milikelvin differences. The filming above was done on the Helion 1 XP50, sensitive to 60millikelvin differences. I wasn’t expecting a major change, but it is pretty significant, actually. Makes it harder to hide behind a ghillie suit, and rain fog smoke which already don’t impact much supposed barely impact it at all. I did about an hour of testing last night and was very impressed. What angle are you looking at? Signature concealment? Counter concealment? Operators tricks? Are you looking to buy one and trying to see how effective they really are? What weaknesses they have? There really isn’t anything that makes them obsolete. It’s amazing tech and incredibly difficult to defeat. What you focus on is tricking the operator and taking advantage of the operators confidence in the units. That’s really how you defeat them.

@@ThatThermalGuy Congratz! Personally, i'm looking at it from the perspective of being the one with a thermal spotter. I sadly aren't exactly rolling in dough, and have to settle with a Dali S242, which can best be described as offbrand, likely doing no R&D themselves. My main targets will be humans, during Airsoft games, and have been checking out the risk of a ghillie being invisible to thermal. Here’s how it did against someone hiding with a ghillie suit on. Now, I got the T20 because it was rated for real rifle recoil. You don’t need the more expensive recoil rated T20 for airsoft. You can get the T10 or T12 models. They’ll work just as good as what you see here. I thought Cold Blooded was just a fallacy implemented into Call of Duty for the sake of gameplay, I never thought you could actually hide your Thermal Signature in real life with specialized clothing If you did experiments, you ought to try seeing if the whole covering yourself in Mud thing works against thermal imaging like how they did in the Predator Movies
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
The mud thing doesn’t last long at all. It begins to take on body heat upon contact, and instantly begins the warming up process. It’s a slow process, but it’s progressive. By the time you cake yourself in enough mud to be effective, the first mud you put on is already warmer than the mud you got it from, and depending on thickness, heat is migrating toward surface already. It will dull your signature, but not eliminate it.

Yes good enough. lol. Alright, we apparently need to have a talk about what it is Im doing here, and how to actually apply this information. Because the point is apparently being being missed. Please read below. First, I'm testing things, not marketing a product or making claims. Second, Im deliberately causing failures you can see. lol. So what do I mean by that? Its perfect for what it does. Test things. Im a materials tester. This was a test. Trial run. Never tried before, had no idea what results would be. Never imaged the materials or placements before. I had never tried mechanix gloves before, had no idea how they would look. This is a test video. You're acting like this is a finalized product, or a presentation on what to do. haha. Its not. That said, if you are saying that the signature reduction wasnt enough to be useful, I strongly disagree. I am demonstrating the tests in the open without any use of environmental concealment or proper stalking concepts. This is the worst case scenario of what can be seen. Someone literally standing or kneeling in the open, or laying down, not just in the open, but on a flat driveway with no obscurants. Tell, me, do you know anyone who would do such a thing if actually attempting to hide or E&E? In combination with effective and proper use of environmental concealment and stalking concepts here, you are a ghost. I could upload films of me properly utilizing this, but they would be boring, because you wouldnt see anything at all. Without prior knowledge of the fact there is a person in viewfinder, and the location of the person, you wouldn't have a chance. I filmed these types of shots a couple times and realized in addition to being boring (youre literally just sitting there staring at a nature scene) they arnt a fair showing of the tests because its too effective to use environmental concealment and stalking concepts with it. I therefore deliberately attempt to show fail points to show a good demonstration. Which is why Im standing, kneeling and laying down on a driveway. lol. If you are looking for a material that completely blocks your entire thermal signature, theres only a few Im aware of, and they are known by everyone. They're called structures. lol. A physical barrier not in contact with your body is about the only thing that actually stops your thermal signature. Anything else, are just obscurants. If you are actually wearing something and it is mobile, it is obscuring your signature/profile. Not eliminating you. What obscurants do is fool the operator. Not the device. Its no different than using a camouflage uniform or ghillie suit against the unaided eye, or against night vision. You are still there. If you're standing in the middle of a road, or laying down in the middle of a road, a camouflage uniform or a ghillie suit doesnt help you against the unaided eye or against night vision. Get it? You're saying this doesn't work while I'm literally standing in the middle of a driveway. Do you likewise say ghillie suits dont work against the unaided eye, or camouflage uniforms dont work against night vision, when shown a video of a person wearing them while standing in the middle of a road? Thats not how you're supposed to use them. Likewise, its not how you would use this. ;) I can shoot film of environments with and without me in them, actually using proper environmental camouflage concepts, and I would wager you wouldnt be able to tell which ones had me in them and which ones didnt. And thats with you KNOWING in advance I am there in the viewfinder (in the field, an operator doesnt have that luxury) and KNOWING that I am deliberately masking my signature (again, in the field, an operator doesnt have that luxury). Talk to thermal unit operators, especially the ones that have multispectrum optics available to them. Most, if being honest, will admit they basically use thermal and ignore the others for the most part when tracking people. And they admit they look for the bright white human shaped blob. Because thats what they see. If they are tracking a bright white human shaped blob and it suddenly disappears, thats usually when they'll flip over to another form of imaging or change palettes to try to figure out what happened. But otherwise, they mostly stick to white hot thermal. Ask firefighters, police, search and rescue, what do they use, what do they look for? The bright white human shaped blob. Heck, if you know airsofters and milsim guys with thermals, ask them what they look for. The bright white human shaped blob. Or maybe you've got friends who are criminals, or in the cartels, or who work high end security. Ask them what they look for. They'll all say bright white human shaped blobs. Thats the reality. You arent fooling the technology, you are fooling the operator. People never encounter individuals employing thermal masking, and if they do, its usually pretty crappily applied and part of that bright white human shaped object is recognizable as a part of a bright white human shaped object. lol. So what people look for, when using thermals, is not the tiny speck of white surrounded by specks of white, in a forest full of specks of white. No, they are looking for the giant bright white human shaped blob. And if they dont see it, they keep looking for it. Thats reality. What you see above was actually probably good enough to fool the majority of operators, even though it is done with materials that failed and filmed out in the open. :)

It probably used to be more rare to encounter enemies with the tech, we had a monopoly on its use, so the cost/benefit ratio probably wasn’t worth it in order to evade detection by an enemy that mostly never used such technology. Today’s battlefield is markedly different, especially with Biden gifting our enemies with both US grade and US made thermal and night vision technology in quantities large enough to make appearances at every skirmish in the future. Our enemies in those same theaters of war today will have markedly different tech and capabilities. Command may need to reevaluate that cost/benefit ratio in today’s new world.

@@nilsandresen9912 There is a GPS network called Blue Force Tracking which does mark everyone's position on a map, but not at the micro terrain level. A UAV can provide micro terrain tracking, but typically that's not as important as using the UAV to mark targets for the guys on the ground via an IR laser (it looks like God's finger is pointing out and illuminating things for you). As awesome as it is, I think it isn't something we should rely on because the signal can be meaconed by a sophisticated enemy in the future which can lead to devastating consequences. Proper planning with a clear objective are ultimately the better way to conduct operations and avoid fratricide. And of course, the loss of senior members is driving us to the same mistake we had coming out of WWII into the Cold War, and then again from the Cold War into the GWOT. Would be risky to setup though because WP warms up really fast and could prematurely set off the cap IMO. I guess you could put the WP into the target container with excess water, place in boiling water until the WP melts, pippet off the excess water, and then press the cap inside. That should be fairly safe.

Is this for showing how good your insulation is on the gear? I run hot and need breathable gear so I'm just curious on if your gear is for zero temperature situations and therefore not showing a thermal signature?
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
These are experiments in how different materials look/work when viewed by thermal imaging. Which things seem to block heat signature, how much, which things don’t. Everyone running insulation is going to get hot. Firefighters run heavy insulating turnout gear constantly during responses but suffer through it. It’s doable. The purpose is showing things for their thermal effect, regardless of comfort. If you need to avoid thermal for whatever reason, these types of things, while uncomfortable and hot, could save your life. Example, interdiction with criminals gangs, it’s well known that some criminals use thermal to track officers movements, which can be used for both avoidance of officers or to ambush them. This kind of stuff hides you from those criminals, allowing you to approach and engage unseen, to indict on their movements, capture their lookouts, etc. If going down the theoretical path of a SHTF or WROL situation, which is what I think a lot of people are preparing for, there will be predator groups that form, hitting houses and killing occupants and taking supplies. From a defensive perspective, acknowledging that the bad guys will have this technology is tantamount to survival. Thermals and nightvision are available over the counter for practically anyone to purchase in the US right now. So I am recognizing that well equipped predator groups would exist, and taking steps to determine my best odds for survival and how to evade/escape such technology or at least reduce my signature enough that a casual operator of such tech would miss me. This is oriented more toward survival and counter operations. By learning how this equipment works, you not only become better at evading it’s use by an adversary, but, you also learn to identify the hallmarks of an adversary attempting to conceal themselves from YOUR technology. Allowing you to spot the sniper in the bush who has taken steps to conceal themselves from observation. I have long advocated that night vision is best for assaulters and thermals are best for defenders, if you can only afford to buy one. The best, obviously, is to have both. But understanding how each works in the real world is not readily accessible information to every person. This is, above all else, a learning channel. So people can see for themselves, from as unbiased a perspective as I can manage, what things look like. Most people have never seen what someone hiding their signature on thermal looks like. Most people have no idea what does hide a signature. I’m simply providing that learning resource. What people do with it is their business. 👍🏻

From looking at numerous thermal videos there seems to be a big difference between a warm blooded animal and the frigid background but perhaps a bigger difference between a warm blooded animal that is venting its body heat through its ears than the warm background. I wasn't sure T-vision would work down here in Florida in the summer but saw some good footage recently.

That might change in temps like 110 to 130, like Mohave desert level stuff, but up here in the extreme North of the US, I never get temps that high to test in. 105 was a freak event. Where has the heat (thermal radiation) gone? Since it's not cooling anything, is it just more evenly distributed or more quickly dissipated to the environment so it cannot be picked up?
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
The answer is two fold. One, there are blocking materials under the ghillie suit that slow down heat transfer dramatically, allowing just a small amount of heat over a longer period of time to get through to the surface. And the second part, is this surface is under the ghillie suit material, so the heat that gets passed through And comes into contact with the suit fabric and fibers, now has a very large surface area, the material at the base of the ghillie to spread out upon, and independent tendrils of jute, each of which acts like a heat sink, with the outermost surface of the ghillie tendrils remaining close to ambient air temperature while the base is effectively drawing off the heat from the fabric base. So, material that slows rate of transfer of heat, in conjunction with fabric to spread lessened heat level out over, combined with thousands of micro heat sinks. Then add in wind movement, either from motion or just breeze, and that helps carry away heat too.

Depends how intense you get with it. Running with this level of blocking, I could comfortably to semi/uncomfortably (but absolutely tolerably) do it and move/hike up to probably around 70 degrees outside. Pushing 80 degrees starts shifting that. I wouldn’t want to use it past about 85 unless for short periods of time or just holding still/laying down. 90+ I would think you would start facing medical risks after any significant length of time with movement involved. That why I’m looking into other materials for signature reduction. It works for my environment, up North by the border with Canada. But I’m sure there’s other ways to reduce equally (see my other videos experimenting with netting, drapes, parachute material, and I just got in two additional items I’m going to start testing too including a denier nylon taffeta in camouflage, extremely lightweight, but rugged. And a netting base with layered material to see if I can vent heat while obscuring the vent.

Effectively sandwiching it against the inside of the outer garments to keep it all in place when putting on or taking off the thermal protection gear. For demonstration purposes, and testing, I wore a shirt and pants, then radiant barrier over the normal clothing, then outer clothing/ghillie suit over the top. I think I’m going to change that and see the radiant barrier directly to the ghillie/outer layer, and see a thin layer of cloth to the inside. You can see what I mean at the 30 second mark in this video: m.kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtShprqnkrXMe5c.html It’s about 25 degrees F outside fir this footage, and that’s my son in layered sweater, vest and winter parka, and insulated snow boots. The pants though, are regular pants. You can see his heat signature is blocked by the winter insulated clothing, but not by the standard street clothes. It’s enough that if you held still and employed decent stalking concepts /camouflage and movement techniques, you could probably evade detection by many thermal operators who simply look for the bright glowing blobs of color against the monochrome background (which is probably the majority of operators, since they get lazy and no one ever tries to hide their heat).

Well, you get pretty dirty sticky and nasty, because you have to layer it on really thick… and you have to know when the thermal is going to look at you because it takes 20 to 30 minutes to put on a uniform enough solid thick layer of mud entirely covering your body, and the mud only provides limited thermal blocking for 5 to 10 minutes on average. So by the time you’re finished putting it on, it’s already warming up from your body heat. It’s not as hot as you are, so your signature is deadened, but it’s not as cold as the mud on the ground either, so you still look like a warmer human shape against the colder background. Not that great an option…. Lol. I think he gained some help because he was pressed up against and into a clay mud cliff face. So he could just pull it across into his body quickly, and it would still be kinda cool. That, and the predator only had an 80 resolution thermal sensor. 😁

Did it one better. Did same experiments after carrying gear and hiking a couple miles of trails. No change. What you see is what you get. My other videos show pretty clearly how the innate heat pattern works on the ghillie suit. The way it’s constructed means the base layer of it heats but the top does not. Now then, the blocking material underneath the ghillie in this video is a different beast. It inhibits the normal heat pattern at the base layer, meaning both the base and the top do not heat up. It continues to work through every temp I’ve tested it in, but with the blocking in place it can start to get miserable inside it with activity as heat outside goes up. It continues to be effective, but you get progressively more miserable. 80’s and up I wouldn’t want to wear it and have to move around, especially in full sun exposure. It’s still effective, I just personally feel it starts getting into medically risky territory for any extended duration of time. Which is why I’m testing other materials to try to find other options. This particular video was shot in the 30’s. Any heat at all shows up blazing when it’s that cold out. As the environment is hotter, the temperature difference at base layer to environment isn’t as stark. At higher temps, the blocking sometimes isn’t even needed, meaning it’s also cooler and more manageable.

@@Poodleinacan what about criminals, cartels, desperate people who want what you have? Remember, this tech is in the hands of anyone who can afford it, or steal it, or kill for it, and that means the bad guys have it and will use it against anyone they want at any time for any reason. I’m far more concerned about desperate criminals than anything else. It’s also in the hands of any occupying terrorist cells already inside the wire. I don’t know why people instantly think of using this against their own government and skip completely over foreign government agents, terrorists, criminals, etc. lol.

@@ThatThermalGuy most people think about the government, because they don't have to worry about criminal cartels or terrorists that in the mind of most people wouldn't be carrying high tech stuff to search and locate their targets. Simple criminals and terrorists are more to use search parties than technologies.

@@Poodleinacan and I guess most people don’t live on the southern border or deal with what’s happening at the southern border very often so I can see what you mean. My bigger concern is the way things are going right now we’re looking at another run on food supplies, and general scarcity as things across the board don’t get restocked, stores aren’t getting deliveries, natural gas deliveries are down, raising electricity costs for heat, protests and people getting fired over shot mandates and unemployment across the board with people being unable to feed their kids (or themselves), rent doubling in some locations, taxes going up along with costs at same time people already have less to go around anyway, mass terminations of police officers refusing jab at same time as police departments being defunded, etc. In other words, desperation combined with less to keep criminal behavior in check. I look at that as a storm of potential human criminality. Criminals will always use whatever technological edge they have, especially if it means their chances of survival go up.

Ok but why is the cat low-key thermally invisible also?
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
The cats fur acts as an insulator. If I wear a fur coat I’d get the same effect. Likewise on heavy winter jackets, especially down jackets. Anything designed to retain warmth and minimize heat loss by its nature also reduces your thermal signature. The best gloves I’ve found for thermal signature reduction are snow gloves. Lol. Chickens, rabbits, etc, their bodies all emit relatively minor heat compared to their more exposed feet and faces, where protection is thinnest or non existent. The combination of really any type of insulation with camouflaging and profile masking (like camo netting, or a ghillie suit) works well for reducing signature.

@@cybertrk How would you ever accomplish that, though? You'd need at least a mesh frame within the glove, and when doing anything with your hands whatsoever that signature will flare right back up again. Thermal insulation would be the only real option for this.

@@arztschwanzfurz1631 The only glvoes Ive found to be fairly effective were a heavy trade off with dexterity. Ski gloves do well. But it makes fine motor manipulation very difficult. I imagine those mitten style gloves that fold back off the fingers to reveal fingerless gloves would be viable. Then you simply pop off the mitten part to expose fingers when you need to do something. Its definitely going to be a keep them covered unless you really need them kind of thing. Ive been wanting to get a hold of some airforce nomex flight gloves. Nomex has some interesting properties on thermal.

An aluminum shield would work better and be less hot 🔥. Just gotta know the camera angle
@ThatThermalGuy
@ThatThermalGuy 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, no, aluminum would show on thermal quite well and be readily apparent for what it is. To verify this, I need only look at the aluminum wheels on my truck on thermal, and yep, they look exactly like wheels. A shield will look like a shield. And a moving (or even stationary for that matter) shield would draw attention from a thermal operator as being out of place especially in the woods.
