The Curse of The Baritone is a myth. When Baritone voices are trained they actually have an excellent full, thick quality in the high range. Training with a vocal coach can break this "curse".
About the Baritone range: The baritone voice is the middle-range voice type for males; it lies between the bass and tenor ranges, overlapping both of them
The second reason is that most men, singers or not, fall under the baritone voice type
The last great popular baritone singers were arguably Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Johnny Cash. Elvis actually could sing well into the tenor range with the same thick full sound as a Baritone singing low notes.

A baritone will never sound the same as a tenor. Even if you can sing high, you can't stay in high range without raising the larynx which is not expanding the range but cutting the low resonance. You will sound like a limited range tenor. Baritones can even reach D5 with mix voice training while a tenor can reach F5. The baritone can have much more power while singing if they keep the low resonance. That will limit the range but will give nuances to work with. It's like trying to make a Viola sound as a Violin, it will never happen. The structure is different. All you need is work your arrangements to make it sound nice in your own range. Also the range does not only increase in high notes...

Really..he just showed u his range..i'm a baritone that was limited to D4..i have had 1 not so good vc to another that was mediocre..learned my progress came from just committed exercising..i am back from sabattical & after just 2 months of daily excercises i now can reach F#5 & take alto excercises for warming up..mayb if u practiced instead of trolling & disparaging voice teachers u could find that baritones can sing extremely high..ever heard of a cat named cgris cornell..gl..practice..stop trolling..your never going to get better by trying to diminish others

Back when I was getting singing lessons, which I got for about 9-10 years (2000-2010) from the same singing teacher, he never called me a baritone. Thinking back on myself (and listening to myself on tape from back then) I had the top notes more similar to a bass (peaking at about E4), but he never said anything about my "voice type." He actually got me singing Tom Jones music very early on, who is high baritone himself, which I am in shock over that he started me on singing the songs of such a big voice when I was only 15/16. Maybe about 6 or 7 years in, I called myself a baritone. His response I still remember to this day: "Why are you calling yourself a baritone? Who told you are a baritone? We don't use labels on the range of our voices in here! It's make you think you are only supposed to sing 'here' (indicates a small region with his hands) when you really can sing 'here' (indicates larger region with hands)." I liked hearing that.

The only other time he mentioned voice types, is when I sounded incredibly strained on a note. My singing teacher said: "Why do you sound like a bass trying to sing like a tenor?" He was very good at making a person laugh and see the ridiculousness in the sounds we accidentally make when we sing without thinking, something he also always said. "A singer is always thinking about how to sing properly, but we have to show that we aren't thinking when we sing."

i never once took vocal classes. my speaking voice is baritone. Ive been playing the guitar and sing for years as a hobby. it has been 7-8 years, now i can roar like a lion while singing rock music and reach high notes etc. Lessons are overrated imo. There are so many amazing people around giving singing tips. pick an instrument and sing buddy. try to use those tips and in time you will feel the diffrence. Dont be afraid to experiment with your voice, its ok if you sound like a dying duck trying to reach high notes. in my experience thats how you learn. just try not to hurt your vocal cords. A Baritone with a trained higher register is similar to a Dramatic Tenor, a Baritone will have less timbre than a Dramatic Tenor singing anything over C5, . because a Tenor sounds more comfortable in the higher register, it will sound more fluid. Dramatic tenors are like the huskies of the tenor world, and often get confused with Baritones and bass when singing really low.

The answer is simple. People wrongly thinks gettin high notes is hard because of strain, but that just a matter of taking some singing lessons. Now, someone who is a tenor has the real curse, going downwards there is no strain, but as having thiner vocal folds it becomes a nightmare to make any sound! I can tell that 'cause I'm a tenor and my lowest chest with a lot of hard work so far is a G2! GGGGGG2222222! And I have to be really focus on it, Baritones can hit C2, B1, A1... those sounds with such a great body and presence! don't curse your voice! almost everyone can go high, you can too baritones! thing is that not everyone can go lower... And I have to say, that when people hear a low note with real presence they react as frenetic as when they hear a high note! Take a look at Pentatonix even if you don't like what they do... it doesn't matter, just listen to the bass on their group hit low notes and how the crowd goes crazy. And also he's a good proof that low voices can go high! he can hit A5, you can say: well A5 is high, but not that high, there are a lot of men that can get into the 6th and even the 7th octave. But the thing is: HE CAN HIT "A0"!!!!! and even a G0 (A0-F1-F#4-A5)

You're totally right about people trying to put you in a box and classify you. The most important thing is that one is able to learn to hit the notes he wants and in the way he wants in an expressive and artistic way. Many of my favorite singers that sing with a lot of dynamics and variety and can sing high are actually considered "baritones." Some people call me a baritone because they hear my lower, smooth and warm notes when I sing lower, but most vocal coaches say I am a tenor because of my range and ability to access a light sound without singing falsetto. I like to consider myself a "baritenor." That way I break out of the box and can embrace both advantages. Your range is impressive. I am a singer-songwriter and recording artist and have purchased and used most vocal instruction courses out there (the most popular) and have looked into different schools of thought regarding singing. Each course has different things they focus on and promote as the key to singing. I feel I learn something from each course. Ultimately each singer has to find his own path to developing and building his voice and artistry. I just bought both of your albums from cdbaby. It's nice when people who teach are actually able to sing. That is to say, they actually have proof of it instead of talking. I won't mention other instructors. I'm purchasing your course too. I'd like to see if there are any gems in it that may help me develop my voice even better. Greetings from Washington State.

When I sang with the bass back in high school, my trainer could hear some off notes in the group. That was me, so he made another group- the baritone. We were only two there, which made me feel like the choir is never incomplete without the baritone. That made me sad. To further that, we were never given our proper tune to harmonize with the others. I still am. I just didn’t know my exact role in the choir. When I saw the word “curse” I was sadder. Until now I would sing solo and without an audience because although I know I can sing, I have never gained confidence when singing in front of people.

Thank you for this! I always to not label myself as a baritone or tenor cuz it doesn't really define how I sing. But when people hear me sing they say I'm tenor. I can go low to a D2 (pure chest) and up to a G#5 (balanced mixed) and up to F#6 in HV/Falsetto. I'm only comfortable up to E5/F5 in belting/mixed voice and up to C6 in HV/falsetto. I am only self trained but my supports spans from F2 - E5 - E5. I am still training and learning new things while observing legendary singers like Mariah and Whitney. Anyways thanks!

I wish people wouldn't say things like this. My vocal teacher from high school insisted on pushing me out of my range and instead of becoming better at bari I just became totally convinced I was not a talented singer. We listened to "before and after" recordings of our voices at the end of the year and she didn't get the results she wanted and ended up apologizing for not being able to help me get any better because I still could not sing anything over middle C. I still can't!

When I first started taking singing seriously, I was told that I was a baritone, and I was in my mid 20s, but when I started singing at open mic nights and in the choir at my former church, my choir director told me I was a tenor, and I started embracing that though I was singing in both ranges. I'm a typical baritone who can't sing pure tenor or bass parts without running out of natural tonal support at either end of my singing range. And I gotta say that I'm proud one of them. I have quite a nice voice although I could work on improving my overall singing experience a bit. But I can get a nice gentle boyish tone, but being a baritone I can never quite duplicate the tonal sound that a tenor would be proud of in that same key. I also like practicing the deepness of my voice, though I can never quite get all the bass parts correct either. When I return to my natural baritone range, it's amazing how much more comfortable I feel singing in that range. But I've definitely gotten better at extending my tenor and bass areas of my range, but I can never quite achieve those parts without sounding a bit off key.

Hello there, I’ve got some questions. Can I expand my vocal range If I already have 4 octaves and what voice type am I? My range is C2-C6 and normally my break is at Bb4(when I try to hit B4 for example) but when pushed I can do C#5, although If I start mixing around A4 I can easily mix without tension up to D5. My head voice is up to C6, but I can sometimes do screams that are at D6 but I don’t count them, since they are screams and don’t sound that good. I can hit C2 after lowering my larynx pretty much and my lowest comfortable note is like F#2. I feel very good signing in my mix and head voice, idk why. I was never professionally trained and I am 18 If that matters. Any help would be appreciated!

Then I went to a vocal completion and of course I didn’t get chosen for a call back because of my low register and that sucks. Now let me ask a question does people with higher speaking voices have a better chance I making it in the music industry feather than someone that has a lower register voice. Or is it just by favoritism of someone being able to hit falsettos

i got into the art of singing (not singing itself, but the knowledge and understanding of singing) a couple years ago because i noticed i could hit some high notes. at the time i thought i was just making shrieking noises and being stupid. but i came to find out, on my own, that i could in fact hit a G5 like Patti LaBelle (still a pride of mine:)). and in fact i had an easier time hitting notes in the 5th octave than in the 2nd octave. sorry don't mean to boast but it was such a confidence boon since everyone around me was always telling me i was being stupid lol :)

I know for me, the main reason I was so upset with being a Baritone (i might even be a Bass-Baritone but I'm not sure yet) was because being on Broadway is my biggest dream and passion, and the male roles you see on Broadway are mainly Tenor roles. But I really want to start working hard to be able to reach those notes, hopefully even hold them, sustain them, sing them with great breath support too, so I really hope I'll be able to do that!! :))

I've been a bass as long as I can remember, and I can hit only up to G4 in chest voice. I definitely can't resonate or support up there, only up to C#4. I can always support down to C2 regardless of my condition, and usually down to G#1. I can easily reach upper 5th octave with headvoice aswell. Also many people would actually prefer to have a lower voice (men) than they have, and I would too. Men are supposed to sound masculine, not feminime.

Great videos! The Baritone Curse is just another excuse people make to claim that they can never be good singers in my opinion. It simply isnt true. It must be great to be a baritone with that manly timbre and tone. I can never in my wildest dream get a tone like that since I am probably what people in the classic world would call a Lyric Tenor with that gentle boyish tone (aka boyband sound), first passagio starting at E4. Where was your passagios naturally before you learned to make it seamless? I wish I could find a way to sound more macho overall in my sound, but I guess it has some perks to have a natural high voice as well. Do you have any helpful tips to achieve a more manly sound for a guy who sounds closer to Adele than Johnny Cash? I guess I should work a lot on my chest voice. Btw, would you say Freddie Mercury is a high tenor? It is strange with his timbre, because some of his earlier work he sounded like a ballerina female almost, and then in the 80s he sounds almost like a baritone with that manly voice. Not that it even matters :P Keep going strong man, your channel is going to grow, and I hope to be able to take some lessons with you eventually.

Hello Nikolai, A few tips for adding heft to your voice would be to find a balanced/slightly dampened larynx and make sure the root of the tongue is not riding up and blocking any of your sound when sustaining notes. The voice continues to mature into your 40's. Freddy sounded higher in his youth but his range declined due to misuse and health problems. Some singers that had vocal issues had higher voices in their prime and then it deepened on them in later portions of their career, like Elton John. If you take care of your voice and train your voice, you can maintain your optimum pitch throughout your career. And thanks for the kind words. :)

Joe Redfield I know the feeling too. I'm in a very peculiar spot when it comes to my singing voice. I sing bass in my college choir yet outside of the classical realm, I sing contemporary r&b, pop, and some forms of rock. If you are a true baritone, it doesn't mean that you can't sing high or contemporary music. It just means you gotta work on navigating your voice through your trouble spots(aka your voice flip from chest into head voice/falsetto. I know this because I'm currently working on it as well. I love songs from artists like Stevie Wonder and Bruno Mars. However, they are true tenors so me as a high baritone finds some difficulty in singing them properly. The way to get the range and sound you want it to really strengthen your head voice by providing proper support to the notes while keeping your larynx and throat relaxed. Once done properly, it'll create a rich and powerful sound on your high notes without sounding like your shouting or overdoing it. Vocal consistency is also key as well. You wanna be able to sound good on a regular basis. Hope that helps.

My voice is like that of a lyric baritone but all my lower notes below a Bb2 are weak. Ive only more recently learned that my range is baritone as ive never actually looked into my voice to that extent but i want to be able to sing my own stuff so bad. My normal voice sounds pretty much in the same range as yours but im from the south and its a little more twangy and slightly slighty higher.. but still within the baritone note range. Could you point me to the best direction that may help me realize my natural singing voice that "sounds" good? I can sing in key and am the opposite of tone deaf, i can play ripping lead guitar over any key 😅 but nooooope on my vocals. I just REALLY need someone who has the expertise to say heres what you're doing and heres what you need to do exactly. (Sigh) i think ill start again by finding baritone singers and singing along but with my own "voice" and hopefully that will reinforce my singing muscle memory. Hi Vinicius. You have two great things going for you. One, as the earlier reply said, with training, you should be able to increase your range. Training can help you unlock a lot of potential in your voice as you begin to understand how sound is made, sound placement, the difference between the different voices (chest , mixed, head) and how to control this instrument we call voice. Second, you are young. As your voice naturally continues to mature and develop, you will also see some deepening. When I studied classical voice in my late teens and early twenties, the C2 was about it, and then only on a "good day." 30 years later, I have hit a G1 in concert and have it be nice and full. Keep singing!
