Because it looks like a trashy no budget operetta in some post-Soviet Siberian mining town. The actors all feel miscast and overact, except for Lucheni, who is sleep-walking through the role and looks more like Piangi from Phantom. The superfluous dialogue scenes dealing with Hungarian politics are pointless and stop the show cold. The costumes are awful, like they were stolen from a seventh grade production of "The King and I." The conductor seemed to have been high on LSD during "Prologue," overall direction is overwrought and pointless, and the sets look like a trailer trash variation of "The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari." I can go on, but my fingers are developing carpal tunnel.
