This is the first video in my Beginner series for learning how to fly without the use of Flight Assist. This is my regiment for teaching students in Newton's Gambit ( forums.frontier.co.uk/showthr...) ). I tend to divide beginner FAOFF skills into 5 proficiency levels. The exercises shown here in this video comprise all of the exercises for Proficiency Level #1.
Update: Proficiency #2 has been released! • Elite: Dangerous - "Fl...
Update: Proficiency #3 has been released!
• Elite: Dangerous - "Fl...
This series is not the only material on KZfaq for learning FAOFF. I highly recommend looking at everything you can, especially LookInverted (CMDR Lancer's) videos on FAOFF instruction found here ( • Elite: Dangerous - Lea... ). Also, don't forget to find inspiration in other Commander's skills. I can't tell you how many times I've watched KZfaq videos of some of my favorite FAOFF Commanders over and over again. Inspiration is a powerful fuel. I'm looking at you Isinona!
I usually assume going into Proficiency #1 that a student can "Quiet your Ship" already when in FAOFF. Essentially this is the skill to stabilize your ship, when at full stop, after being placed in a chaotic roll. This is usually a quick skill to learn and many of the videos already posted to KZfaq cover how to approach this.
A last note: As with anything that requires the development of skill, it is best to just do it. Most full-FAOFF Commanders, and those who aren't full-FAOFF but use it regularly, didn't have guided training exercises. Rather, they created their own exercises to develop their skills. They just stuck to it, and eventually became proficient.

Awesome vid. Reminds me of learning to fly a helicopter. My instructor would often get me to fly out to the ‘H’ which was in the centre of a big circle of mowed grass in the middle of the airfield and fly around it with the nose of the aircraft pointing inwards. Then he’d make me switch up to hovering the other way and flying with the tail facing the middle of the circle. This was all made a bit more challenging by the fact that the wind would push you around quite a bit and any corrective input on the controls always required a counter input on the other two controls. As you mentioned the trick was to make very small inputs which required smaller corrections.

Making me rethink my bindings. Having played only just under 1000hrs, I've been wanting to go FAO for some time. I've only gotten to landing on some low G planets, but I still use FA on to get it stabilized most times. I also would do FAoff in asteroid rings to search for mother lodes because I could boost then swing my ship around in several directions while scanning to find as many as possible in the time I was looking. But I would cheat by gliding just above or below the plane of the belt so I wouldn't have to dodge all those nasty rocks. Like I said I will have to rethink some bindings because my head look analogue is the same as my thruster lateral/vertical (no track IR). I do have another analogue that only has thrust forward and back on it that I can swap for head-look and just use the other analogue for thrust lateral/vertical which in turn I can just use the main throttle for thrust forward/back like I have it set for anyway, I just use the analogue during landing in stations because it always returns to zero. I'm going to start practicing more.

Been a little over a month and I am proud to say that I am 99.89% FA Off. It was very hard at first but muscle memory kicks in after a while and my brain has adjusted to making small adjustments instead of constantly over correcting. I don't think I even went through all of your proficiency before I really got the hang of it. I flew to San Tu, bought a Sidewinder and crashed around a bit until I started to get nausious. I started to dream in FA Off. So I took about a week off. When I came back to it and started to just mine and collect mats for engineering an exploring Phantom I realized that I was already doing it. I'm landing better... even on a 1.3G planet that I didn't take the time to take note of. I kissed the ground, recovered and landed with 11% hull. THAT'S A WIN. I'm still not nearly as smooth as our sensei here. But the only time I turn it on is when collecting mats from High emissions drop zones (dropping the session and rejoining brings you back in FA On. I found it faster to just leave it until that site times out.)

My re-binding worked like a charm. Much better than before. The throw on the Virpil throttle is larger than all the other throttles I had before, and I have the controls chair mounted instead of desk mounted so I decided to go throttle forward and reverse instead of forward only using a button option to switch to reverse. This gives me only half the range and I can still use all the buttons and switches comfortably on the throttle.

Learning FA off is difficult but it's nice when it "clicks" in your head. I had a few moments like that. I went from tumbling through space, to tumbling in space but in the right direction, to over controlling so it looked like a mad drunk person trying to dock, to finally realizing small corrections and just relaxing on the controls overall made for a swan like grace.

Man you make it seem so simple, following the outer ring of the station I always drift away then I over correct and smack on the station. *EDIT:* After sticking with it for a few days I am starting to get the hang of it, I found that flying the length of the station and going between the struts (yes the space is massive between them) makes it more fun after you get bored of the tethering exercises and if you smack against the station and spin around it's good practice for regaining control. Also shows you how important lateral/vertical thrusters are
@XxsteamerxX
@XxsteamerxX 3 жыл бұрын
That's what I found. When I got bored with the exercises, I just went and did things I needed to do like mine for a mission or engineer a ship and go to different planets trying to land. After, I would fly nap of the earth for a while and through canyons before taking off back up into space. Couple times I boosted straight into the surface to go KaBlammo but it taught me my limits. Combat is infintely better, even though I don't prefer combat, but I found I don't lose the ship from my sights anymore.

I’m fixing to buy elite dangerous and I have a strong background with flight sim and fpv racing and I currently have rudder pedals and thrustmaster warthog hotas. Next on my wishlist are a set of rudders. I use a twist grip on the Kosmsima VKB grip. Use it a lot. I feel it would be a lot easier on a set of rudder pedals. But the realism is what I bought ED for. Enjoying my new found freedom of FAOff for a little over a month now. Now when I do use FAOn, if find it so stiff an unforgiving. I actually hate it.

Wolf, You brought a smile to my face this evening. Watching your FA off training took me right back days as a check airman for a very large helicopter company. Flying the Agusta 109E helicopter is a big challenge for the average pilot with SAS off. (Stability Augmentation System) Most are uncomfortable flying and hovering with SAS off. I always made it a point to teach my students to hover and maneuver with SAS off. Sideways, backwards, pivot the tail rotor about a point. That sort of thing. You were doing exactly the same thing in your video. OUTSTANDING!

I find picking up stuff with my cargo scoop with FA off is great practice for the fine inputs needed for such flying. I can't do it in combat yet, but I can reliably dock at a spinning station without much difficulty. I use a dual joystick with pedals setup. Configuring the toe brakes for "Flight Thrust" allows me to make small FA off inputs without moving my hand to my throttle, and having two full joysticks allows finer precision. I found a program called Joystick Curves, it really helps with the small inputs, and reduces overcorrection. It's also improved my handling of interdictions, as I tend to flail a bit during those.

Duuuuude....I'm a professional concept artist / illustrator who plays ED. When I'm working, I keep KZfaq running in the background, often on ED videos. I've run the Obsidian and Yamiks gamuts as well as a ton of others....started running out of ED topics to keep my brain running during art production. Today, I came across your channel and your excellent training videos! I used to play Eve and there were some great folks dedicated to training new combat players in-game but I always thought this game needs that badly. I'm a dedicated explorer (for past 4 years), half way through Pioneer rank now with the intent of picking up combat after Elite exploration rank. Your videos are so professionally narrated, succinct and eloquent. I've ALWAYS wanted to become a FAO pilot so I can't wait to employ your videos soon as I start dedicating time to combat. Cheers! Btw, just a bit of silly talk here: if you try to pronounce "FAO" in Spanglish, it sounds like "feo" which means "ugly" lol CMDR JonAcosta www.artstation.com/jacosta

mouse and keyboard will be more accurate and smooth with fa off. In settings turn on relative mouse for x and y axis and increase that to mid to high on the sensitivity. Its horrible control in super cruise and with fa on but before switching it back turn fa off and see how easy it is to fly in it. Its effortless almost for average skilled pilot. But once you go into supercruise your pitch and yaw will be horrible

And I must say, when I turned the assist on it was like my ship was placed on some space rails. Weird feeling. I only flew around an Ocellus starport, messing around and flying through its rings. Thanks for this great tutorials, I'll surely watch them all and try to learn, I'm also thinking about asking to join the group, but maybe after some practice. Fly safe!

This just opened up a whole new tier of game play, thank you. Subbed! o7 PS just realized an analogy is like a tank and it's turret moving independently one to another that's basically what we're doing with our ships with the assist off. It's the difference between having a car with machine guns mounted to the front versus a Humvee with a machine gunner on top....guess who wins?

Just what I've been looking for in the area of FA off. I'm on PS4 and Elite Dangerous will arrive wednesday! I decided after watching quite a few 'How To's" to also get the Thrustmaster T-Flight Hotas4...which arrives today! Also, I like your Newton's Gambit group concept and would very much like to join Newton's Gambit as well as the Inara Wing and the groups discord, ofc. All requests to join will be sent this weekend...once I've had some game start alone time with my ship. I intend to start right off with Flight Assist off and will be using your Beginner vids...which are Awesome! I thank you and all Commanders in Newton's Gambit and the Inara Wing for providing your time and expertise in helping new Commanders get their space-legs, so to speak. New sub here :)

After 8 months, I've finally bought a Used Thrustmaster HOTAS and now I am ready to start this Course again. I had to give up because my previous Joystick was too old and broken for me to finish this Tutorial. I look forward to Completing this course and joining the squad.

At last, I'm diving into flight assist off and enjoying it so far :) Still a total newbie as I'm still training on this video's exercices, but just being able to put your ship nose in a different direction than your vector is fun and feels like opening a world of possibilities. I had no problem with the asteroid field exercise as it only involves thrusters, but I struggle with the tethering exercise. I can tether to the ring but i'm constantly drifting left and right, I can correct my position for a while but can't keep a constant straight line like you do. Maybe it has to do with my joystick that has a high sensitivity? I will try to lower it and see if it helps. EDIT: I chose the lowest sensitivity profile and it's better, still drifting a tiny bit left and right but way more manageable. Thanks again for your videos, keep them coming!

I play elite in VR with a dual stick setup I am developing modifying a pair of VKB Gladiator MK2's which have twist axis' this giving me six axis under my two hands. I'm triple elite and I'm now starting to play with FAOFF and last night was the first I tried these exercises in my vulture, and I found it very very soothing. Afterwards I kept getting little flashbacks like you do when you spend the night with a new girl, your tutorials are changing 100% FAOFF from something that intimidates me to something that relaxes me, thank you so much for these.

Honestly, I think flying is the feature I have neglected most in this game, I just got to a good station so I think I'm going to try this next time I get on thank you for the video.

Watching this to get a better grasp on cold orbiting in regards to ax combat, and the more I watch these FA off videos, the more I realize SC got it right with the vector indicator.

Excellent video. I've seen others that suggest the same thing. One thing I would like to see added is a graphical overlay that shows what thrusters you are using at any one time (if possible)

i may not ever be an FA off player 100% of the time like you but i do need to learn FA off for fighting at least. thargoids are very difficult to hit because in FA off my aiming skills are garbage especially when trying to snipe a thargon swarm from 4KM away. Your excercise where we had to orbit the station.... yeah i watched that thinking psht that looks easy AF... nope... nope not easy at all. it was actually very difficult. its good to now have a training excercise to do each day that can help me. after doing that for about 30 minutes i stopped and went mining in my anaconda flipped my FA off and i was really really very surprised at how much more control i had over my ship. im not a complete novice at FA off but im hardly in the realm of good with it either. i look forward to seeing the rest of your videos. thank you for taking the time to post these lessons. o7

I just found these vids and I think they are great. Very natural and easy to follow. It seems that my eyes start to glaze over when watching/listening to some of the other vids. I guess I can see what you are doing with the main throttle most of the time, but not the thrusters. I only wish you had described exactly what you were doing the thrusters and control inputs. For example, on the first exercise, were you holding up/down thrusters or only bipping them. Or on the third exercise, were you pulsing full lateral thrust or varying a partial lateral thrust, and etc. Anyway, I love my truck simulators, but I've always wanted to fly my space ships in FA Off (semi-Newtonian), but it was just too crazy. But since I've lost interest in the game until some QoL improvements, I think learning FA Off in the meantime is just what I need to get back into ED. My main problem now is that I can't hold my ship steady, always drifting around. I have full analog controls. I've tried adding small dead zones and large dead zones, but nothing seems to help. It might be that I can't use vertical thrusters w/o introducing some lateral thrusters, or maybe I just need a lot more practice. If you continue with the series, and I hope you do, I also hope to hear some descriptions of you control and thruster inputs while performing the exercise.

Thank you Roger!! I will definitely be doing some videos showing control inputs in the future. I just uploaded Proficiency #4 so soon I will be going on to more focused micro-vids (10-15 minutes each). In those videos, I will absolutely go over some of those things that people have requested. Thank you so much for watching and commenting. Let me know if you want to meet in-game sometime and I can work out with you whatever solutions we can come up with for any roadblocks you might have.

When I read the wikipedia article about elite I learned about the two game mechanics in elite dangerous, the arcade one and the newtonian mechanics one. That completely blew my mind, and from now on I'll only play flight assist off.

This is a great way to make Elite Dangerous Fun Again. This is flying mastery at its core. Perhaps a toggle button to switch between analogue directional thrusters would be a good idea? Also the YT algorithm is really slow as I should have seen this video in 2018 at least. Regardless I've not even dabbled in flight assist off outside of combat and that's only because the AI usually likes to play jousting games unless you can get a good lateral sweep on them to remain on target. Yes I turn FA back on once in sight again, if they're still alive after a few passes I've already got their pattern and am orbiting them until they blow up. Which is a lot easier now I'm flying an engineered Fed Corvette with beam lasers. I really hope you're still playing and your community is awesome.
