The Elite Steppe Lancer is a cavalry unit in Age of Empires II: Definitive Edition that can be trained at the Stable once the Imperial Age is reached. It is a light cavalry unit that carries a long spear and can attack at range, albeit it is very short. It is only available to the Cumans, Mongols, and Tatars.
Tatars: Elite Steppe Lancers deal +25% damage when attacking from higher elevation.
Armor: Silk Armor (+1/+1, Tatars only)

3 new playable civilizations

Tatars have the best SLs in the game and they still struggle to win most melee fights even with balanced resources. The unit is still overnerfed imo. It especially doesn't help that SLs are only available to 3 civs and two of them have alternatives with Keshiks and Paladins for tatars and cumans respectively.

Here is the thing. Paladins are a much bigger gold intensive unit. If you want a composition of Kipchak's and Paladin's, that's a super heavy gold investment. Kipchak's and Steppe Lancers work very well together much like Mangudai and Steppe Lancers. While Keshiks are clearly the superior unit, making them from castles can be difficult, especially in Castle Age. The Steppe Lancer I feel is a unit that is supposed to give a bit more firepower than the light cavalry line while not fulfilling the same purpose as Knights. Also, I'd argue that the Mongols have the best SL as their HP boost also works on them. Yes, they miss the last armor upgrade which make them more susceptible to archers, but in Melee, they are the strongest

@@GreyWind1988 As it currently stands (just did tests last night) , in practice such as a 1v1 (Tatar SL vs Mongol SL Post-Imperial), the Mongol SL will win with 7 hps left over. This means that without micro and tactics, Mongols win head to head on a flat field, letting normal unit AI to run its course. However, because its down to the wire with the Tatar SL only needing 1 more hit to kill the Mongol SL,if the Tatar player gets the surround/flank on the Mongol line, the Tatars can and will win. Testing this in 5v5s and 10v10s, even without a hill bonus, Tatar SL can win vs Mongol if they get the surround off. And being that Mongols dont have a discount bonus, being able to obtain masses of equal resources is feasible for both sides.

Lancers are easier to spam cuz you can train them from stables

@@danielp4597 yes, they cost slightly less, have almost twice the HP, better armor and same attack (but faster attack rate) but they requires a castle and dont have the 1 range for melee attack, overall, elite keshiks stats are closer to those of a paladin

The Steppe Lancers kinda suffers the same fate as Elephant Archers, both are really situational useful

For me steppe lancers work great mixed with knights, knights hold the damage, and steppe lancers do extra damage. On the other hand you can use light cavalry, but they are a lot weaker, but they cost no gold so is a cheap unit to make a cheap and strong combo

@@elduquecaradura1468 you are literally sacrificing a lot of gold for really minor improvements, especially when factoring upgrades. It's better to save gold to make more cavaliers or paladins while spamming hussars in the mean time

One big problem that’s apparent here is the pathing. Steppe Lancers have 1 range, so against range units they stop at 1 tile away. That forces a lot of bumping as units in the back try to reposition, and it ends up limiting their focus fire against archers. Ideally, the front units would charge fully in so the rear ones can attack easier.

Could you do Mangudai vs every unique units and mangudai vs every hero units.(but with all blacksmith upgrades + recurve bow+ sipahi + silk armor upgrades)

It need to drop the cost at least 30 gold to be a good option….with 40 gold you can take keshiks that even generate gold…..and if you need stronger you go knights anyway….

Mongol SL : bottom S Tatar SL : top A Cuman SL : middle A Tatar SL groups can still win vs Mongol SL if they get the surround/flank.
