Real talk, Ice Cube had a 3 year stretch as good as anyone. From 1990's "AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted" and the EP, "Kill At Will", "Death Certificate" in '91, "The Predator" in '92, and "Lethal Injection" in '93, he was putting out some work. The 1st 3 being the best but they all went Platinum.

Ice Cube is simply one of the best mc's of ALL TIME. Amerikkas Most Wanted and Death Certificate are CERTIFIED CLASSICS. What Nas did with Illmatic bringing the world into Queensbridge Ice Cube did with all the situations going on in his hoods in California...he gave you INSIGHTS into his hoods with CUBEVISION. He is one of the rawest and best storytellers in Hip Hop History. Notice how Cube, Snoop and Dre always had these great interludes before songs and that GFUNK music. I believe this album was mostly produced by SIR JINKS. One of my very favorite mc's of all time. Salute to Cube aka CubeVision...flowers been given.

De La Soul were actually the kings of the skits. I'm not sure if they were the first to do that or not... I don't know. LL had a skit on Bigger and Deffer, his second album released in '87. Then De La dropped Three Feet High & Rising in '89. They took skits to a whole new level. I can tell that Cube was definitely influenced by De La in that regard, as far as the skits. Cube took it a step further by making skits that were virtual cinematic shorts.

Note: Ice Cube was heavily influenced by the nation of Islam at this time.. This album is a revolutionary masterpiece based in storytelling, historical facts and just a message overall to the black people. "The death side" was a result of 400 years of conditioning and "the life side" was the awakening we're seeing a lot of today. No way in hell they would let this album happen nowadays. He went in on everybody holding the black community back and they would be boycotting him to this day trying to cancel him for this masterful Instant classic.

A bird in the Hand is imo one of the best verses in hiphop all-time. The whole album is so angry, radical, cynical but at the same time funny as hell and just a perfect picture of the zeitgeist of early 90s LA. Very important album that couldnt be done today

Respectfully, I would have to disagree. Amerikkas Most Wanted would have the edge for me. Because of the content and more importantly what Cube was going through personally at the time. He made the whole album on the East Coast with the Bomb Squad because the drama/beef was so deep for him on the West Coast. He was pretty much living in exile on the East Coast while he made Amerikkas Most Wanted, you could hear all his anger, hunger and frustrations on that album...he poured his pains into that project...CLASS CUBE...CLASSIC ALBUM!!

After hearing this album and the skits, you can see how Cube wrote the movie Friday right? The majority of the album was produced by Sir Jinx and DJ Pooh (who also help write Friday). But the production style came from The Bomb Squad who produced the 1st album. It sounded like a West coast version of a Public Enemy album. I'm not sure who Cube was talking about in the 1st verse of "True To The Game" but the 2nd verse was about MC Hammer. He has a music video to it. You should check it out. "Bird In The Hand" is probably my favorite off of this album too. It's STILL one of the realest songs ever and the beat... 🔥🔥🔥🔥.

This album was a concept album. This came out when we still listened to tapes. Tapes usually had a side A and a side B. A group of songs on one side and the rest of the songs on the other. On this album, Side A was the Death Side. It depicted what was happening in Every Hood USA and the mentality. Side B was the Life Side. The life side was more conscious and political. This album came out after efiL4zaggiN by NWA. They dissed Cube hard on that album. I just KNEW he was gonna diss them back. I went through this whole album just knowing that the next song would be the one he sent shots at NWA on. Got all the way through the album with no NWA disses and I couldn’t believe it! As dope as the album was, I was disappointed that he didn’t respond. Then No Vaseline came on and blew my whole mind! I lost it LOL. #1 diss track of all time, IMO. And NWA was finished after that. They never recorded together as a group again. This album was an INSTANT CLASSIC!

Yeah, you gotta do AmeriKKKa's Most Wanted next 11:25 - St. Ides was paying Cube to do commercials for them which is why he said that 12:23 - that line always makes me laugh cuz Martin Lawrence said that on his show! It's the episode where he realizes he hooked up Tommy with Pam at the end. Even John Witherspoon paraphrased this line on Next Friday when he said he felt 5 pounds lighter 25:10 - the song title stems from the phrase "a bird in a hand is worth two in a bush" meaning to be appreciative of what you have instead of risk losing for more. In this case, George H.W. was bullshittin' as President helping "minorities" (apparently, that runs in the Bush family) so it seemed better to risk freedom to make more money moving drugs than work a regular job

"Be True to the Game" is about sell-out blacks and sell-out rappers. The second verse is actually more about MC Hammer. After hearing this song, Hammer confronted Cube in a club or bar in LA and asked him if he was dissin' him, because if you watch the video, there is a caricature of MC Hammer being played by a man wearing parachute pants, Cazal shades and a "funny haircut"... and he's doing Hammer's signature dance moves. Cube denied it, but I heard Hammer actually made him apologize. Hammer was no joke. He approached everyone who dissed him.

Ice Cube and a lot of early '90s rappers were anti-R&B around that time, because R&B radio stations and even some old school R&B artists used to front on hip hop in the beginning. Radio stations literally wouldn't play rap music in the early to mid '80s and the ones that did only played it at night for like an hour or two. Hip hop has come a long way since then, but that R&B vs rap tension used to be a thing. In fact, Cube covered it more on his first album, Amerikkka's Most Wanted, with the song "Turn Off the Radio." I actually think his debut is better than Death Certificate, but BOTH are classic albums. AMW just hits a little more harder and it's more gangsta. It's perfectly produced, as well. I'm not sure why the voters wanted you to start with this one first. I must've missed that poll. It makes more sense to start with AMW first, because DC is more like a sequel. A lot of the songs and skits recall the first album.

True to the game is about all the Sell outs going against black people for the dominant society. Not Dre or Just Dre. He talked about Mc Hammer and all the dance and pop rappers at the time. Hes telling them to keep it real and stay black and strong. Don't water down Hip hop for a check

To be honest, Cube's timing was probably his biggest hit against him. He masterfully transitioned between the late 80s/New Jack era into the Golden Age but lost a little steam as he focused more on acting and transitioned to a more West Coast style. Had he initially come out a year or 2 later like Dre maybe his name would come up a little more concerning the greats.

It was nice taking a trip back down memory lane watching you react to this classic album. If you ever want to check out some of his later work, you should check out Westside Connection's first album, Bow Down. He still spits some great lyrics on that one too.

@Kingahmadtv I definitely think you’re one of the best to do this review shit, because you understand the balance of listening and explaining, as opposed to just talking cats heads off for the entire review to the point where we damn near forget what we’re listening to. Reviewers like to use that cop out of “It’s a REVIEW!! Imma’ talk!!” Indeed. And they should all do it as they please. It’s their brand and I get it. I just think they forget that being a reviewer doesn’t give you a pass to talk a literal triple the time and length of the record. Love what you do, and how you do it…but I only have one question for you. Unless I’ve missed something, how has a King like you that is dedicated to BARS managed to not do a review on COAST CONTRA?!!!!😳🤯 It’s mind blowing that you haven’t done any reviews on them. And if you have, and I just missed it or can’t find it, then SALUTE! My apologies! But, Fam. C’mon, my Lord. Make this make sense to me!!!😂

This was exactly the reaction I was hoping for. It really took me back to '91 when a 17 year old me first listened to this masterpiece. The comments below all do a great job with the history, concept, and praise of this album, so I'm going to stick with some recommended artists and albums for future reactions. Most certainly react to Amerikkka's Most Wanted, The Predator, and Lethal Injection. I also strongly recommend listening to It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back by Public Enemy. Like this one, it will blow your mind. Another I strongly recommend is from Da Lench Mob, who you heard on this album. Their album Guerillas in the Mist is a very underrated gem of an album. It was produced by Cube, and it's really just a great album. Now for some artists and groups that are political and/or against the machine that you don't necessarily have do a reaction for, but should most certainly listen to: Dead Prez, Jedi Mind Tricks, Poor Righteous Teachers, The Coup, Paris, and X-Clan. There are obviously many others, but this is a good start. Peace and Love, man. Sorry so long a post. Lol.

A product of the era it was released in...in the intro he speaks of the "Death" side and the "Life" side...those are the two sides of the album...or in the case of CDs, tracks 1-11 are the death side and tracks 12-20 life side
