I have a lot to say. First, a balk isn’t a thing in softball so please stop calling it that. Second there are no pick offs in softball as a runner is not allowed to disengage from the base until the pitcher has released the ball. Third softball does have illegal pitches but this is not one. It’s a ball because it was an attempted pitch that did not go through the strike zone. Illegal pitches in softball most often come from something called a crow hop when both feet are off the ground simultaneously which the rules state 1 foot must be in contact with the ground at all times. She did that. There is also a rule that the ball can’t pass the pitchers hip more than 3 times and she is good there too. Yet another common way for an illegal pitch to be called is if the pitcher disengages from the rubber before moving forward twords the plate (usually in the windup) but this rarely happens now that 1 foot is allowed to be off the rubber behind the plate. So having said all that this essentially comes down to this; it’s a ball and just like any other called ball it is live and runners advance at their own risk. Yes I am a softball umpire, former coach and league official.

Incorrect per USSSA Softball rules. If unintentional, ball is live, all play stands. If it is judged by the umpire as deliberate it is still a live ball, dead ball being called AFTER play is finished. All play stands. The offense is then given a choice to accept or decline the ‘ball’. A team warning is issued for the intentional drop. A second offense results in pitcher being restricted to the bench and coach ejected from the game.

Might not be illegal, but it’s definitely NOT an elite trick play or a high IQ trick play. It’s actually pretty elementary. For one the entire play relies on the runner to attempt to steal second base after the ball is dropped in the vicinity of 2nd base. That’s very low probability. If you want to say it’s in case the runner steals, Instead of pitching just drop the ball “accidentally” which sounds good, but it’s incredibly complex and it’s highly unlikely to work.
