• Elizabeth Holmes: 'Val...
Elizabeth Holmes became the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire as CEO of her biotech startup, Theranos. The former Silicon Valley darling now faces criminal trial and 20 years in prison over the Justice Department’s charges that she used the once-hyped blood testing company to defraud investors.
Yahoo Finance is turning the page on Theranos, examining arguments to be raised in Holmes’ defense and the culture that fueled her rise and fall. Interviews with a Theranos board member and employee who have never spoken out, as well as experts on Silicon Valley, raise the possibility that Holmes, rather than being a villain, is a victim of a Silicon Valley ethos that values a perfect pitch over proven results.

The concept of Holmes being a self-made anything to me is nonsensical. Her parents had ties to the tech industry and US Govt, so she grew up learning how to be comfortable in those arenas. She had a level of inherited social capital that is extremely relevant in terms of how she got where she did.

Of course she'll claim her ex is at fault. When you're so obviously guilty, your only option is to do what she ever did: plain out lie. There is no way to defend what she did, so her defence has to invent some weird story in order to make her look like the victim. Else the only thing left to say would be "Yup. She did it. She's guilty of all allegations".

@sklyingjoker

True, but I would go deeper, it's always about money yes, but now ever more than before money often willingly goes to where the "story" is, not where the reality is. It's a much tougher to sell actualized things as they are, you have to make up stories around them and sell those instead....and hopefully those stories are just marketing strategies for real things.

Her family members did the same thing at the trial today, trying to act like they were just random people talking to the press on the street and claiming she was a “victim” in this. But just read how she behaved to the widow after she drove her employee to commit suicide with her manipulation, bullying and gaslighting technique. Chick has zero empathy. Straight up monster

I wish they would stop saying her beauty helped her do this when they ACTUALLY mean her blonde hair, blue eye, thin youth helped her do this. And of those attributes, I think her youth was most useful. The men who invested in her viewed her more like a daughter who can take them to a prosperous future. Elizabeth never showed or emphasized any body parts, lowered her voice to be taken more seriously, and didn’t even brush her hair. She didn’t use seductress tactics, not even in her over-aged boyfriend who met her when she was learning Chinese as a teenager… She didn’t use any feminine seduction tactics, she sold a good story just like her male scammer counterparts.

I've watched and read so much on Theranos and this was the best summary I've seen. To sum up: 1) Holmes' fraudulent "fake it til you make it" leadership is accepted practice in venture capital startups. 2) She was prosecuted because her developmental "fake" actually endangered real people's lives--which could have been avoided by more honesty, even if that meant delays. 3) Ignorance is an explanation, not an excuse for criminal fraud. Moral of the story? Just because everyone else jumps off a bridge, doesn't mean you should, too. A dumb idea (lying) is always a dumb idea--especially when it's illegal.

She deserves to take full accountability for everything she did. Something to understand, though - she wasn’t enabled for the first time at Stanford, she was enabled for the first time by her parents, who share her same beliefs. They believe that wealth is the ultimate goal, and “fake it til you make it” is more than okay. When Elizabeth was 9, she wrote a letter to her father in which she said her greatest goal was to be a billionaire. When she was in elementary school, she said she didn’t want to be the president when she grew up, but rather that a male president would want to marry her because she would be so rich. It’s not a surprise that she ended up this way. She frauded and guilted people her way through life. This is not a new game to her. Her parents taught her how to play it.

I just finished the book and it was amazing. I’m tempted to read it again. The book doesn’t mention the military, but I read an article stating the military did not purchase any of these machines. They wouldn’t talk to Holmes and did not want her devices.

One sad aspect of this is that there is probably someone out there who has the training, know how and brains to develop a device which could actually make blood testing on a consumer level a reality. Due to the scam that Holmes committed and also her holding stupid as hell patents which can block others from developing these devices -- it will be very hard if not almost impossible for a truly skilled person to develop such a device. I hope Holmes gets the book thrown at her in terms of sentencing. And as well, I hope that those patents she is holding are revoked.

"If" I were a venture capitalist I might have asked myself.. "Self? What credentials does this 19 year old drop out have to revolutionize the medical industry?" That question is what makes this story so interesting. Not that a 19 year old drop out could figure out how to conduct fraud and deep voice, but how big investors actually fell for it. I understand greed can blind people, but to this level is astonishing. Also embarrassing which is maybe why some big investors don't want to take it further?

It's very simple, IF prosecutors CANNOT prove she knew the product didn't work, then it's NOT GUILTY. The real issue is why these investors not want to sue her? It's their money, are they too stupid to learn about their own investments? The SEC/AG should prevent these so called "board members", mostly irresponsible doctors from ever serving on a board again.

This was an original and thoughtful take on the case of Elizabeth Holmes’ and Theranos. I appreciate that the documentary maintained placing accountability with Holmes while also crediting her for her vision that has become reality through other medical startups. The film successfully made the case that it was the compounding effect of overaggressive valuation with too little due diligence from the media, SV community, the board, federal agencies, and investors. I agree Holmes is culpable but so are all the players that did not perform their core duties - While she was center stage, it was indeed all of the players that failed and enabled the deception to continue for over a decade.

It's not complicated. The woman is a con artist and a criminal. When she went into Walgreens and started deceptively engaging medically with patients she stepped over a line where there is no defense as she deserves 4 to 8 years in prison. And I hope that's what she gets. ADDED: We will know soon. Jury has the case and is in deliberations.

The investors who didn't do any due diligence, are also responsible for the fraud and potential human harm because it's tTHEIR MONEY THAT PURPATRATED THE FRAUD AND POTENTIALLY PUT PEOPLE IN DANGER. But of course, they don't take any responsibility for it. Putting the responsibility on someone else is how they got to the big jobs and big money in the first place.
