I think he kind of admires her before, mostly thinks she's odd. But he still does all those nice things before even when he didnt even like her: give her a coat, help her study, give her that present. He did all those things when he didn't even have a crush on her and then in this moment when she aced her big test, he saw something in her that no one else saw and finally fell in love. Just perfection. Also I love the moment where she does the bend and snap in court and the way he looked at her in admiral was so cute. AND when warner proposed to viviane in front of her emmett immediately looked at her, seeing her completely shattered IMMEDIATELY runs to the board scanning for her name. Trying to make her feel better. And the fact that he was so confident in her that he knew she'd be admitted before even seeing her name. Wow BONUS: The fact that he didn't fall in love with her right away actually shows so much of his character. He didn't fall in love with her immediately like every other guy in the musical because he didn't care about her looks. He fell in love only after he saw her dedication and intelligence after the test, meaning he got attracted to her for what's inside not outside. And the fact that his whole character is a parallel to Warner, who at the start of the musical made clear his reason for liking her: "Every guy dreams of having a girlfriend, that LOOKS like you". 4:02 this moment where we first see Warner, her past lover, and Emmett, her future lover side by side of her- warner on the left and emmett on the right like the pages of a book, they perfectly demonstrate their relationship with Elle. Warner is scrutinising her and doubting her intelligence by how she possibly got in to Harvard, while Emmet was welcoming and introducing her to Harvard with her roster the same as every other smart person there despite her looks. And laughed at her thinking she was joking because he thinks she's smart
