Alex and James are joined again by the Leicester and England prop Ellis Genge who talks emotionally about unions, pay cuts and players strikes as he looks to shelve his plans for a new representative body for players.
Plus, he discusses his views on statues, racism in the game and looks back on things that friends and teammates have said to him that have made him feel uncomfortable.

Every time Ellis speaks my admiration for him grows. He does need to stop dissing himself though as he is obviously far more intelligent than the impression he is trying to give off. Also he is going to be one hell of a player for England in the years to come :) The sooner we realise that every life matters and what every one has to say is important the better a society we will all be.

Gengey's so much more natural and articulate in familiar surroundings as opposed to his first appearance in the studio. Top fella. So sad the series is ending just as the Rugby starts up again.

I think this is my first you tube comment...... such is the quality of recent shows. Great work. Taken a serious step up from an already awesome footing. I am a Bristol boy and a fellow (international) loosehead to boot (2 caps for Saudi, no biggie) cannot describe how highly I rate the G man. Do you have his agent details or official communication channels? Also if Payno could try and give a shout out to Gordano RFC with his best West Country "up the Gord" it would help endear me to the lads as I have taken unreal steps to miss pre-season this year by heading out to the Middle East - I hate cardio that much. Stay well, geniune thanks for helping keep me chuckling for an hour or so each week in these tough times, don't underestimate how many like me you have helped. Much love, Alan Alan Steve (the boys thought me so good they named me thrice - none of them my actual name!) PS. If you ever want to do a segment on Saudi rugby - I am going to be here for a while and quite an interesting little thing going on out here.....

I loved this episode every week it's good. But this one as a young man the same age as ellis from the same sort of back round it's so nice to see him be such a good role model in what he's doing fighting for the rights of players. There are probably millions of children from your background who are amazing sports persons but don't get the chance. And to see Ellis at the front of something big in the game like this amd speaking so good is great. And what a player and massive more potential (Wish he could have been born in wales). Hope he keeps fighting his and the players corner. And being a role model for young children all over britain no matter your background or colour sexuality anything you can achieve.

Rugby does have a class issue. I played rugby at my comprehensive school during P. E. I then played for a club in my area as school introduced me. I took it off my back to get involved. Otherwise the opportunities were limited. There's not enough of a rugby culture in the lowerclasses in England. In SA, there's rugby at all economic classes, however to succeed you need to get the right opportunities. Kholisi doesn't go pro if he doesn't go to Grey College. He started at a township school. Mapimpi, was a rare phenomenon but the EP Kings launched his pro career as there's a rugby culture in that area of every class. Then you get lower middle white schools in SA that still play rugby, and offer opportunities as universities and clubs scout. This is how Am, Etzebeth, Vermuelan, Bakkies, Dejager, Matfield, Os, Small, Chester, Paulse etc got noticed. These players are icons in the game that never went to superior schooling. The Craven Week stars come from top schools, but the late bloomers don't.

What needs to happen is that the RFU/world rugby needs to create a department which acts as a player union, which can make unilateral decision which acts in the best welfare of the players

Well done chaps... HAS it kills me to say but your absolutely right with regards to a player affairs. I work for one of the biggest US business brands and employees have to be respected through these times. Equality is fundamental to its success. I love the game but massively worry about where players end up globally if the UK rugby business cocks this up....

Yet another engaging episode. James intelligent knowledge and history and Ellis, wow, shake it up. Can't wait for next week. Lucky to have this insight to a game we all love. Legends on and off the pitch. If Nigel can put his stamp on this next week, now that will be interesting. No better man for the job.

If a players' union was the effective provider of player insurance in the game it would be a great way of forcing the clubs and the players to deal with it. Players will never speak up for creating something with real teeth, it would be rare enough in normal corporate environments but their desire to sacrifice for the club is practically part of a player's CV. To be a success a union needs buy in from the rank and file - Ellis is a star and rightly gets the chance to do his talking on the pitch. Other guys who might only get one or two chances a season don't want to get a reputation as toxic bin juice. Introducing something into the structure of the game that made a players' union a vital cog in the machinery would benefit all parties. Disputes will always happen and a well run union is a tool for resolving them.

It's amazing seeing that politics goes all the way to the top a remember being a u18s player was pretty good and better than alot of lads who were getting picked at county level coz they went to good private schools in the area fully made me lose love for the game in the end.. got sick of going to trials and seeing dads in coaches ears then seeing the same lads get picked when they were average at best... its horrific how it goes all the way to the top though particularly with England... that's why Wales have more guts in pressure games then England do they get lads from everywhere not just the ones with the high up dads.

Speaking about 'classist', I was born in England to Irish immigrants in the 70s and instantly supported England in football. But, rugby, I supported Ireland. I grew up on an estate and in the 90s people like Will Carling meant nothing to me. It's changed a lot

Dont get too down Ellis, that reply rate isnt at all bad in the world of surveys (my profession). In fact, it's pretty damn good. And the ones who didnt reply may well have been worried about anonymity... a union can have a great deal of clout without representing EVERY worker in the industry

Such a good show. So true about rugby being class sport. My school comprehensive, got to county finals, semis every year. Everyone played for the colts team. Not one player got picked from trials ever !! Always the private schools. Love the game, but the people running it and the structure. I think what the clubs are doing is breaking all employment law and wouldn't stand up in abritration, or in court. Form a break away league, sell franchises and screw the rugby clubs. They no longer have the interest of players first and foremost and there clearly is no balance. RPL becomes defunct if Top 400 players sign to a break away league. If clubs are reneging on contracts unless something is done, then the future of rugby is at risk.

Elliot you are a really top guy! My dad is Welsh/Chinese and my mum is full on Welsh and l was brought up in Oxford England you could play for a local club but you had no chance competing against the private schools! Then you have the Oxford Uni kids coming and thinking they are doing you a favour by turning out for a local club!

Again we come to the point that - people who are only interested in winning and nothing else will never ever look at the whole holistic picture. So owners who plunge millions in to clubs etc....have to win and so coaches have to win so players have to win. Clubs control the players so players have to do what the club says........NZ dont fund Grass Roots, they control NZ players all schools clubs elite clubs are only interested in making sure that NZ all blacks win....!! We need to look at every aspect and make sure that it is fit for purpose. Centrally contract players for England, RFU to call the shots, make the RFU more professional etc etc etc....Lets ensure that teams and players have the leeway to improve and develop.....so players are the best that they can be, England can be the best that they can be etc standards will raise, just a knock on effect

Rugby like Britain in general most definitely has a race issue, England rugby fans sing a slave song at matches, it can be seen in everything from racial insensitive locker room chat dubbed as “banter” up and down the country in middle class predominantly white private secondary schools and universities where some white teammates will discuss their black teammates genitals or in how coaches shift black players away from being scrum halfs or fly halfs to the wing or to the flanks and in the professional game with incidents like Joe Lancaster reprimanding Christian Wade for using his Afropick or Eddie Jones continually calling Maryland Yarde a “gangsta”
