Another tip for people who are not necessarily beginners but want to take their mixes to the next level: If you ever want to boost a frequency on a sound with loud transients without causing crazy peaking, don't use a normal eq. This would cause a loud transient boost....Instead, try setting up a multiband compressor, select the frequency range you want to boost (Ex: 700hz-12khz), set the attack as fast as it can go, set the release somewhere between the medium/fast to medium setting, set the ratio to like 4:1 (or higher if you want), set the threshold to right above the volume the sound is currently hitting (But don't set it low enough for the compressor to do anything). Then, put an eq *before* the multiband compressor in your chain and then boost the eq into the multi band compressor to taste. This will change the tone of the range you want to boost without causing annoying peaks. On the other hand though, sometimes you want to create transient peaks (ex: on some drums like kicks and snares, percussion, etc). It's almost a cheat code. It's the same reason some people have a multi band compressor on the master while mixing.....To boost frequencies whilst maintaining the dynamic balance of the mix.

I would love a tutorial on just vocals alone. Like taking it from 100% dry to the different types, whether it's fat and wide or wet and distant. I feel like I do OK with some of these things but vocals absolutely destroy me.

Although music production is nothing totally new for me there still were many great tips. This video inspired me to try out making some things I currently do differently. And it was a good reminder to keep it simple. I share the opinion that you should rather focus on making less elements sound great than putting many elements in that sound ok. :D

Hey Ellis I had a question. While working with a vocalist, do they send you the topline in mono? Also, do you keep the whole topline in mono or you and "Side vocals" in parts? or you have a mono signal and side signal as well for the topline throughout the song
@maksoofficial
@maksoofficial 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the video, it was really helpful and informative! I wanna talk about a thing you said at 15:03 about doubleing the signal and panning it right/left. If you have the exact same waveforms and you put them left/right, it actually doesn't work, does it? You have to put one signal slightly behind the other If you wanna make it work. Or am I missing something?

Invert the phase, and you get a super wide version of the sound that’s perfectly mono compatible!
@EllisOfficial
@EllisOfficial 3 жыл бұрын
Works only with live instruments e.g vocals / guitars / percs that are recorded twice. Each recording will never be exactly the same as the other so when u pan hard left & right you get the stereo effect. If you’re just panning the exact same signal left and right it won’t work unless you delay one of the signals :)
