I've tried a couple of different scanners and the ELM327 hooked up to my Linux based laptop on my 2002 Holden Commodore (Australian GM car) which is factory fitted with the Chevy LS1 and associated Delphi PCM and I haven't yet found an explanation for why the check engine symbol which comes up on the cars LCD display,and that both scanners show "zero" faults and the laptop shows up a code of P0000 (no fault found),yet I can still use code 04 to clear the check engine thing.Holden use UART Communication which the SRS airbag ,ABS modules,etc communicate with but the PCM uses class 2 communication,a PIM (powertrain interface module) so the PCM (powertain control module) can talk to the BCM (body control module) which is the central hub for all of the other modules in the car and instrumentation,etc.People are marketing aftermarket OBDII scanners as being unable to communicate with the first of the OBDII Holdens & Fords in Australia as far as fault code recognition goes and I got a code P0443 which is the fault code for the EVAP purge control solenoid circuit a couple of years ago,a loose petrol tank cap maybe?I've used the ELM327 unit to measure things such as coolant temperature and battery voltage but I am still mystified as to how a check engine light, etc can come on when I drive past a certain place,etc for no reason,I thought it may be a knock sensor fault but they don't set a code if the engine revs are under 1650 RPM or over 3000 RPM (I sit at around 1500 - 1600RPM most of the time) and the light comes on,do I sound paranoid as it it's not the car that's got the fault but it's something else?,an outside force?,when I drive a Toyota Hilux it doesn't come on but I've had the airbag light come on in that car for no reason (same thing !!!!),can somebody explain THAT to me ????

Hi Kris, can you please give me some tips, how to use this ELM327 without screen in Linux, to have the answer in a variable? I mean s simple bash script to have that answer from the car in a variable? Like echo "01 01" > /dev/ttyUSB0 and the response than in $VAR Thanks :-)

If you use the command ATL1 It'll clean up the command prompt issue. It'll put the command and response on separate lines

try to enable line feeds: ATL1

try displaying output data from your car on conky and if that works give us a .conkyrc file :)))) good luck :) much respect and have a nice day :)
