Some people describe these as "hidden features" on their G-Shock watches. That may be accurate since there is no mention of these diagnostic functions in the official owner's manual for these watches. By pressing multiple buttons in different combinations it's possible to bring up diagnostic functions and/or information that isn't normally accessed. These same button combinations may work on most other G-Shock watches.
By accessing these diagnostic functions, the user can test that the LCD segments are all visible, that the automatic backlight "tilt switch" is working properly and that the "Tough Solar" solar cell is reacting to lighting changes the way it should. These diagnostics are not very important in everyday use but maybe, someday, they will be useful just to make sure your watch is working right.
In this video I demonstrate accessing these diagnostic functions on G-Shock "squares" including the GW-M5610, the GW-5000 and the GW-S5600. This will also work with the GW-5510 or any other watch that uses the Casio Module 3159.
