00:00 Title
March 10th, 2018
00:05 A week ago, I ordered an Elodea from Amazon.
Let's open the package.
There was a delay in delivery because of bad weather conditions.
Plants often get damaged due to freezing temperatures and low oxygen levels when shipped via air.
That's why I prefer to buy live plants in local stores.
Pet stores in Manhattan do not sell Elodea.
My cuttings are about 23 cm long.
Initially, I keep all new things in separate aquariums from my fish.
I put some plants into a 3 liter nursery.
And these three, the greenest cuttings, go into 1 liter jar.
March 12th, 2018
01:00 I add seed shrimps into this nursery.
Notice, some leaves fall off the Elodea cuttings.
Also, I add pond snails.
March 16th, 2018
00:19 About 5 cm cutting goes into this nursery with guppy fry.
A larger cutting goes into another aquarium with guppy fry.
A pinch of homemade fish food flakes should make seed shrimps, snails and plants happy for a week or so in a nursery without fish ;)
March 22nd, 2018
01:57 The Elodea cuttings in the 3 liter nursery did not survive.
The greener, less damaged cuttings in smaller tanks grow well.
April 5th, 2018
02:19 Elodea grows fast in the past month.
April 22nd, 2018
02:27 The 5 cm cutting has about 5 cm long roots and about 5 cm green sprout/ branch.
02:45 There is something interesting.
I need to open the aquarium for you to see it better.
Okay, let's do it.
The roots grow on both ends of the old Elodea.
I planted roots of this Elodea into the gravel.
May 30th, 2018
03:12 It takes about a month for this plant to double in length.
The Elodea in the other aquarium grow mighty well too!
It's more than double the initial length.
I trim this plant.
All cuttings go to other aquariums.
July 10th, 2018
03:37 This cutting with a root goes into my HD aquarium.
July 12th, 2018
03:53 I cut this plant in two.
Each part with a root goes into a 3 liter plastic bottle aquarium.
My goal is to get a variety of fast and slow growing plants in all my aquariums.
July 16th, 2018
04:14 It takes about 2 months for a 5 cm long Elodea to grow 10 times longer!
Here you can see the old stub of brownish-green color with a root and a new reach green more than 60 cm long sprout.
I make three 10 cm long cuttings from this 2 month old plant.
Only 1 cutting has a growing sprout.
All 3 cuttings are rootless.
Anchor all 3 new cuttings with one seashell.
July 24th, 2018
04:54 This Elodea plant has been grown in this 3 liters box aquarium for couple months.
The plant has 3 new branches.
I split the branches.
Each branch comes with a root.
Now, I use fast growing Elodea to control algae growth in all my aquariums.
I trim Elodea plants as necessary, every month or two.
Make cuttings of desirable size.
Grow them in old or new aquariums.
Share spare plants with friends or use it to make fish food flakes ;)
July 25th, 2018
05:44 Nine days ago I anchored these 3 cuttings with a seashell.
They were of the same size.
New sprouts grow on both short cuttings.
Let's trim the long plant.
All 3 plants are the same length now.
3 weeks later on August 15th, 2018
August 24th, 2018
06:15 Elodea is one of the fastest growing plants I've ever seen.
It's an invasive plant for sure, and there is some beauty in it.
Have fun and happy aquariums :)

2 months ago I ordered some java moss and when I got it it had a small 2cm cutting of this plant wrapped in it that must've been overlooked by the seller. I just stuck it in the gravel and didn't expect much but now it's grown 5 massive strands that look fantastic in the aquarium. I only found out what it is through this video now

You better! Park rangers don't take nicely on anyone caught spreading around invasive species - heavy fines and possible charges for crimes against humanity with use of biological weapon ;) But seriously, this is a very important matter. There are many examples of disastrous effect invasive species have on local environment. I've seen it in Brooklyn, Bronx, right in the Central park of Manhattan. Native plants and animals get whipped out clean. A decade ago someone release pretty "chines" turtles into Central park. You should see how many of them are now in the ponds! But the last time I've seen native to Manhattan snapping turtles was about 4 years ago - they are gone. And a snapping turtle is a symbol of NY!! The same goes with plants. And I don't like those new types of mosquitoes - the old local where smaller and kinder to me :)) Yeah...just be mindful of it. All the best!

This looks exactly like anacharis...my favorite plant to use in my aquariums. I put it in all of them. I use it much in the same way you do here (it looks really nice rooted in the substrate - if you put a lot next to each other it looks like an underwater forest) but I also use some cuttings as a floating plant. I haven't used duckweed or any other floating plants yet (because I hear they are difficult to remove if you want to), but this one is so versatile and beneficial that I don't really want to remove it. It also grows pretty tall so I use it in my larger aquarium where it really shines as an underwater forest. The smaller fish love swimming through it and it gives the shy ones enough cover to feel comfortable. This plant is really good at filtering water, producing oxygen, and lots of detritus for the cleaning crew to eat. I don't feed my cleaning crew. This plant does it for me. Even some of the fish like nibbling on it but it grows so fast and it can handle getting cut and nipped at so well that I never have had any reason to worry about it.

We have elodea plants here in our ditches. Ive got mine from there and it has lots of snail eggs. I dont have problem growing elodea in our pond. Maybe its because of the tropical climate here. I just put em in a pot with garden soil and they grow like stubborn grass in the outdoors. The elodea likes plenty of sunlight i guess.

I've had Anacharis (Elodea) reach over four feet in length. The stuff grew so fast I had to throw it away on a regular basis. Hornwort is another great plant with similar growth characteristics. Hornwort is perfect for fry as its fine leaf structures give the fry more shelter. I've had strands of it reach 6+ feet.

Your aquariums should be larger size than mine to get it grow that long ;) In smaller aquariums plants grow smaller. The growing head of elodea drys out once it reach the water surface, prompting new sprout grows from the stem. It is rather interesting how this plant growth pattern adapts to get the most available space in the tank. I am working on another video about elodea ;) All the best!

What do the seed shrimp help with? (Also I love your videos and I’m sorry for all the questions 😁)
@4me

I appreciate good question - thank you for them! Seed shrimp serve to main purposes in aquariums. First of all they eat all kind of organic detritus (remains of fish food, old plants and etc) and algae. Secondary, guppy fry (and even young guppies) eat seed shrimp. I have shown in some videos how well seed shrimp help to keep aquariums clean. They are my indispensable cleaning crew :) Check this video for details: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a9xmgsidq5fTlYk.html

Do the Elodea Plant prevent algae growth?
@4me
@4me 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the question! The short answer is yes. The long answer is yes and no. This needs a bit of explanation. All plants compete with algae for nutrition. However, algae on early stage of development consume ammonia (most plants don't do it directly). So, plants compete for nutrition with grown algae. Reducing nutrition for grown algae reduces growth of new algae. Fast growing plants as Elodea are the most effective for that purpose. Check videos on this playlist for more details about algae control: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/Zpioiparm5eyloU.html All the best!

Michael it’s me again my female guppy just gave birth yesterday and I need advices how to take care the fries
@4me
@4me 5 жыл бұрын
Usually, I have new nursery already prepared for the fries to go in on their day of birth. If you did not setup a new aquarium for them to grow in, then you may want to setup it up now. The fry may stay in the aquarium with parents for while. Parents may eat some of them - those that don't move fast enough (meaning those fry were not healthy enough). There are some critters and microorganisms in any well established aquarium. Those are the best food for newborn guppies! I feed fry the same fish food flakes as adults get and on the same feeding schedule. In about a month parenting couple may have another drop of babies and so on. So, no matter how large your aquarium is, eventually it will reach density population limits unless you cull or move fry out from the aquarium. All the best!

Is it possible to adopt your sustainable tanks without the use of scuds?? Those bugs give me the creeps and I don't want them coming in contact with my hand.
@4me
@4me 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, it is very possible. I use scuds as one of many tiny critters in my aquariums. I setup many aquariums and often don't put scuds or any other critters purposely in them. So initially, many of my aquariums don't have scuds. Though, the way I move plants between aquariums - those critters very likely to make into every aquarium over long period of time. Also I have scuds - I don't really get them on my hands unless I put them in my hands purposely.

I have 3 questions 🙋 1) i would like to know the reason for why did the stem in 3 litre aquarium die? 2) are those sea shell safe for fish? And from where did you get them? 3) what is the purpose of adding seed shrimps in the aquarium? Waiting for your answer🙂.....
@4me
@4me 3 жыл бұрын
There are number of reasons for plants to die. I believe the plants grew to the capacity of the aquarium and went dormant first which allows aglae start taking dominance. Consequently, even the dormant plant get not enough nutrition and light to survive even in dormant state. I wash seashells before placing them into aquariums. So, they are safe for fish. Seed shrimp helps to maintain healthy aquarium in number of ways: they feed on algae and detritus (cleaning aquarium); fish fry feed on seed shrimp. All the best on your adventure!

Lichens are used to extract tinctures and probably release some chemicals in the water, they are a fungi that live in symbiosis with an algae I dont think they can live underwater like mosses

One of the samples died in a cup I kept on a windowsill. The one shown in this aquarium is a different...and it still underwater. I don't see it growth, but it stays in the shape so far. It should release some chemical in the water for sure. As with all other plants that I've been experimenting with it is always questionable on how the plant would affect fish and critters too. I need more time to see results - then I will certainly share them with you. All the best!

I use only daylight in all aquariums. Though, I have aquariums with a lot of daylight (close to a window) and some aquariums with much less light (at the opposite wall to the window). Elodea grows in all of them. So far elodea seems to grow fine, but less fast in aquariums with less light. Will see how it goes for all year around ;)

Try to grow elodea from new cuttings. Then make new cuttings from the old plant. Let the cuttings stay in aquarium, but remove the old plant ;)

@sirdukeusa3289

Mehmet Tanrıver, are you doing weekly or every week water changes? Do you have more males than females? 2 female per 1 male, I have a 29 long, and my guppies are doing great, I just brought them indoors after being out all summer. Make sure you feed daily if not twice a day.
@Adhoc_yt
@Adhoc_yt 5 жыл бұрын
pH. Temperature. Ammonia. Nitrite. Nitrate. Daily fed. Check these parameters. Also, dechlorinated water - do you use conditioner for your aquarium when you fill it up? That big of quantity shouldn't need frequent water changes at all, if any. New tank syndrome maybe? Is your tank properly cycled?
@4me
@4me 5 жыл бұрын
There could be many reasons ranging from water parameter to fertility of the fish...could be poison leaking from glue if any were used to build the aquarium or any artificial items (decorations) you got in there and etc. I would suggest you go slowly from the start. Setup a small nursery. I have plenty of DIY plastic bottle/box ideas to start with. Add dechlorinated water and plants. Let them stay for a week or so. Then add snails or some shrimps. Give it another couple weeks. Then you can put a couple young guppies in and...when you see guppy fry you know that your fish is healthy and you do everything right ;) Then you can scale up to your larger aquarium - that is where you can move newborn fish, but keep the old breeding couple in the aquarium they were comfortable to make more babies. All the best!
@84dentistmehmedov
@84dentistmehmedov 5 жыл бұрын
i have this aquarium for approximately 4 years. it is all happening the same, i buy 2 male and 4 female guppies. yes, at first they start breeding. then some guppies grow also. but the longest living one lives only 1 year. and then the numbers decrease gradually. their belly shrinks, they start to defecate white strings which i think of a parasitic infection. i dont feed them too often, only once a day. sometimes once in two days. the tank is fully planted. last week i bought a jbl proscan test kit. it showed that nitrites and nitrates were zero. ph was 8.2 ( maybe a reason for the death of guppies?) i also doubt something else. i have 2 led floodlight projectors. 200 watts each. that makes a considerable amount of light. maybe also this stresses the guppies. i feel so disappointed because i spend so much but get less all the time.

There could be number of reasons. As you may see in this video most cuttings that I got initially died shortly even they were placed in larger nursery with more light. Those plants were most likely damaged by the low temperature during transportation.
